2-D Barcodes

In the past few years, the Downtown Alliance has significantly expanded its use of technology to better meet the needs of our constituents. Our latest effort uses 2-D bar codes. You may have seen them (they look a little like crossword puzzles) in magazines to provide you with  more information in an advertisement.

The Downtown2dbarcode.jpg Alliance is using 2-D bar codes to supplement the information available on our wayfinding signs throughout the district. Don't worry, we're not trying to sell you anything. By scanning the 2-D bar code on your smartphone, you'll find places to eat and shop, sites to see, and maps for getting around. We've started to use them in a pilot project on our Heritage Trail markers. We’ll be unveiling them soon on our Information Kiosk at 7 World Trade Center Plaza and we recently incorporated them (see our Holiday Campaign code to the left) in our advertisements and handouts, such as our new cards showing the location of our 12 Free Wi-Fi hotspots.

If you’re not familiar with 2-D bar codes, all you need to do is download the application to your smartphone. The easiest way to access the application is to go to www.getscanlife.com from your mobile browser. The site will recognize your phone if it is supported and give you a link to download the app. Or try this link:  http://web.scanlife.com/us_en/download-application. Some phones already may come with the application. You can look for it in your applications folder. You may also search for "ScanLife" in most major app stores.
