SUMMARY:Transforming Moments: A Conversation With Diane Von Furstenberg
DESCRIPTION:Before she was an international fashion icon and a member of the TIME 100\, Diane von Furstenberg was a young girl growing up with parents who had just survived the Holocaust. Her father\, originally from Moldova\, escaped the Nazis in Switzerland. Her mother\, originally from Greece\, fought the Nazis as a member of the resistance until she was captured and sent to Auschwitz. Join the Museum for a conversation with von Furstenberg about her identity as the daughter of survivors and how it has informed her remarkable career at the helm of one of the world’s most recognizable brands. She will be in conversation with Dr. Eva Fogelman\, renowned psychologist and author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:The Architecture of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Why are trees talented architects? Architects can spend years designing their buildings\, but trees have been perfecting their own architecture in response to their environment for eons. On a guided walk in Battery Park City\, we will observe and draw the trees around us to understand how they are like skyscrapers! We will learn about how trunks and branches support their leaves or needles and how roots create strong foundations. All ages welcome.

SUMMARY:Apollonia Visits
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, schooners carrying goods down the Hudson River from upstate docked at South Street Seaport\, to distribute their cargo to local markets or to transfer their cargo onto ocean-bound ships to more distant destinations. This trade\, and the industries it supported\, from banking to warehousing to printing\, helped make New York City into a global commercial and then cultural capital. Apollonia is the Hudson Valley’s carbon-neutral\, wind-powered merchant vessel that harkens back to these earlier times. Order a monthly Boat Box subscription for sustainable sail freight delivery of goods sourced from local shipping partners\, from maple syrup to hot sauce to soap\, and pick it up on Pier 16. Or just come and chat with the crew.

SUMMARY:Seeking Modernity in China’s Name: Chinese Students in the United States 1900-1927
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture in Chinese. On August 11\, 1872\, a group of 30 Chinese government-sponsored students departed from Shanghai and embarked on a transpacific journey to study in the United States. They were led by Yung Wing\, presumably the first Chinese student to have studied in the U.S. from 1847-1854. This history-making journey has since been referred to by researchers as the first wave of the Chinese youth studying in the U.S. To mark the 150th anniversary of this historical event and the 110th anniversary of the passing of Yung Wing\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on September 24 by Dr. Ye Weili.
