SUMMARY:Transforming Moments: A Conversation With Diane Von Furstenberg
DESCRIPTION:Before she was an international fashion icon and a member of the TIME 100\, Diane von Furstenberg was a young girl growing up with parents who had just survived the Holocaust. Her father\, originally from Moldova\, escaped the Nazis in Switzerland. Her mother\, originally from Greece\, fought the Nazis as a member of the resistance until she was captured and sent to Auschwitz. Join the Museum for a conversation with von Furstenberg about her identity as the daughter of survivors and how it has informed her remarkable career at the helm of one of the world’s most recognizable brands. She will be in conversation with Dr. Eva Fogelman\, renowned psychologist and author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works) by Sidra Bell Dance New York
DESCRIPTION:Gibney opens its 2022-23 presenting season at Gibney Center with the New York premiere of Sidra Bell Dance New York’s IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works). Marking the 20th anniversary of her company\, Sidra Bell Dance New York (SBDNY)\, the 65-minute program seamlessly connects excerpts from works choreographed by Bell for her company since its 2001 founding. The program has been described as “hypnotically seductive” and “brilliant and impressive\,” Bell’s aesthetic rings of “Pina Bausch\, fashion\, and Harlem’s ballrooms” in a unique\, visionary style that draws in audiences\, deeply. Her distinctive\, hyperkinetic movement and dramatic brilliance hone-in on the human psyche\, questions of identity and the shape of time. Sidra Bell\, who was named Gibney’s inaugural Artist-In-Residence (AiR) in July 2022\, is an acclaimed and prolific choreographer. Her work has been performed throughout the United States and abroad. The AiR program is a comprehensive support system for established creators that provides substantial\, diverse\, and multi-year support for a mid-career choreographer. IN | REP: Introspection is accompanied by a multimedia installation\, RETURN TO FORM: The Shape of Time\, An Installation by Sidra Bell Dance New York and the SBDNY Design Team\, featuring video\, objects\, performance ephemera\, drawings\, costumes\, dreams\, texts\, palettes\, and designs from the artists of Sidra Bell Dance New York and its collaborators over the past two decades.

SUMMARY:Residential Rising\, Lower Manhattan Since 9/11
DESCRIPTION:In the 21 years since 9/11\, lower Manhattan has more than doubled its residential population\, from nearly 40\,000 to more than 82\,000. Downtown’s evolution into a mixed residential neighborhood – which was initiated by the City in the mid-1990s\, but catastrophically interrupted in 2001\, as well as by the financial crisis of 2008 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 – has been a story as much about the conversion of older office buildings into apartments as about new construction. Led by Museum Director Carol Willis\, the walking tour will cover blocks from City Hall Park\, a perfect vantage to admire the new stand-out residential towers\, and wind south through the Financial District to Wall Street\, where Art Deco office buildings have been converted to hundreds of small rental apartments with lavish amenity spaces. Along the way\, we will discuss the zoning changes\, financing incentives\, and historic preservation and development strategies that have produced a new neighborhood. Tour duration is around 60 minutes. The tour will meet at 1pm in the public plaza of 30 Park Place\, midblock on Park Place between Broadway and Church St. The last stop of the tour will be at Wall Street and Broadway.
