SUMMARY:Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Opening day of a new exhibition that highlights works by 28 contemporary artists of Chinese descent\, who explore themes of personal\, cultural\, historical and material metamorphosis in dynamic and innovative ways. Across painting\, sculpture\, photography\, animation and installation art\, these works by established and emerging artists of different generations and backgrounds use experimentation to draw on both Eastern and Western art-making practices and materials. Many of the works will be seen in the U.S. for the first time. Important commissions include new paintings by Sun Xun and an immersive Dream Chamber by Bingyi. The exhibition is organized very loosely around four themes: “Metamorphosis of the Body and Self”\, “Metamorphosis of the Environment and Natural World”\, “Historical and Cultural Metamorphosis”\, and “Spiritual Metamorphosis”.

SUMMARY:Interventions x Crossing the Line: Delicate People
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Childs and Cécile Bouf­fard start­ed the project del­i­cate peo­ple in 2021 as a col­lab­o­ra­tion between their respec­tive dis­ci­plines: dance and sculp­ture. ​“Del­i­cate” describes both Bouffard’s illus­trat­ed fig­ures and Childs’s cre­ative process — the fine tun­ing nec­es­sary to an evolv­ing chore­o­graph­ic sto­ry. Both artists cul­ti­vate intu­ition and inde­ter­mi­na­cy\, fos­ter­ing the sus­pen­sion of judg­ment through a series of del­i­cate­ly dis­turb­ing vignettes. This piece will be per­formed by local dancer Eve­lyn Dugan\, with chore­o­graph­ic direc­tion from Ruth Childs.

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by com­pos­er Igor Stravinsky’s 1919 Fire­bird Suite\, this event pays homage to his musi­cal cre­ations with a per­for­mance cen­tered around a mas­sive wall of light designed to illu­mi­nate the dance of the fire­bird. The unique sen­so­ry jour­ney allows vis­i­tors to rev­el in the glow­ing cel­e­bra­tion and hyp­not­ic dis­play that will trans­form the Parade Ground. The audi­ence expe­ri­ence begins upon arrival\, where all tick­ethold­ers will receive shim­mer­ing metal­lic capes to don once they dis­em­bark\, kick­start­ing the spec­ta­cle en route to the show. Guid­ed by the artists them­selves\, this glit­ter­ing col­lec­tive will make its way to the Parade Ground — set against the dra­mat­ic Low­er Man­hat­tan sky­line — where FIRE­BIRD bursts to life in a hyp­not­ic dance of syn­chro­nized light\, cour­tesy of 500 recy­cled car tail­lights that have been sal­vaged from scrap­yards in the North­east­ern Unit­ed States\, all set to Tou­ki Delphine’s con­tem­po­rary com­po­si­tion.
