SUMMARY:Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Opening day of a new exhibition that highlights works by 28 contemporary artists of Chinese descent\, who explore themes of personal\, cultural\, historical and material metamorphosis in dynamic and innovative ways. Across painting\, sculpture\, photography\, animation and installation art\, these works by established and emerging artists of different generations and backgrounds use experimentation to draw on both Eastern and Western art-making practices and materials. Many of the works will be seen in the U.S. for the first time. Important commissions include new paintings by Sun Xun and an immersive Dream Chamber by Bingyi. The exhibition is organized very loosely around four themes: “Metamorphosis of the Body and Self”\, “Metamorphosis of the Environment and Natural World”\, “Historical and Cultural Metamorphosis”\, and “Spiritual Metamorphosis”.

SUMMARY:“Global Approaches to the Holocaust” Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The field of contemporary Holocaust studies is increasingly international in perspective. These approaches do not detach themselves from European history; rather\, they incorporate perspectives and voices not always considered in more traditional Holocaust studies. The new book Global Approaches to the Holocaust asks: What happens when scholars shift their focus from an exclusively European perspective of the Holocaust? What new insights are gained from exploring the impact of the Holocaust from outside the European milieu? How do countries that were not directly affected by Nazi policies of occupation and extermination remember the Holocaust? What does an expansive approach to the Holocaust entail? With essays about North and South Africa\, Mauritius\, Japan\, Argentina\, Mexico\, Chile\, the Philippines\, the United States\, Australia\, Canada\, India\, Pakistan\, Palestine\, Colombia\, New Zealand\, and more\, Global Approaches to the Holocaust seeks to create a critical voice in Holocaust studies that encompasses not only Europe but also Asia\, Africa\, South and North America\, Australia\, and the Middle East. Mark Celinscak and Mehnaz Afridi\, co-editors of Global Approaches to the Holocaust\, will be in conversation about the book with Dr. Laura B. Cohen\, Executive Director of the Harriet and Kenneth Kupfberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College at the City University of New York.

SUMMARY:Pipes: Trinity Youth Chorus
DESCRIPTION:The final concert of the fall PIPES series highlights the significant role Trinity’s new organ will serve for the church’s choirs and congregation for years to come. The talented musicians of Trinity Youth Chorus sing their own adaptations of two masses: Gabriel Fauré’s Messe basse\, originally scored for upper voices\, and Maurice Duruflé’s Messe Cum Jubilo\, the composer’s last large-scale work written for baritones and a baritone soloist. Rounding out the program is a favorite: Fauré’s beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine.
