SUMMARY:Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Opening day of a new exhibition that highlights works by 28 contemporary artists of Chinese descent\, who explore themes of personal\, cultural\, historical and material metamorphosis in dynamic and innovative ways. Across painting\, sculpture\, photography\, animation and installation art\, these works by established and emerging artists of different generations and backgrounds use experimentation to draw on both Eastern and Western art-making practices and materials. Many of the works will be seen in the U.S. for the first time. Important commissions include new paintings by Sun Xun and an immersive Dream Chamber by Bingyi. The exhibition is organized very loosely around four themes: “Metamorphosis of the Body and Self”\, “Metamorphosis of the Environment and Natural World”\, “Historical and Cultural Metamorphosis”\, and “Spiritual Metamorphosis”.

SUMMARY:A Christmas Carol
DESCRIPTION:PAC NYC brings the acclaimed production of A Christmas Carol from London’s The Old Vic to New York in a uniquely intimate staging. Two visionary Tony Award® winners—playwright Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child\, Netflix’s Adolescence)\, director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical\, God of Carnage)—offer a magical interpretation of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic. Brimming with merriment\, tasty treats\, and holiday cheer\, this immersive production wraps the audience around the action\, inviting the communal holiday spirit in us all. On a bitter Christmas Eve\, a cold-hearted miser is visited by four ghosts. Transported to worlds past\, present\, and future\, Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses what a lifetime of fear and selfishness has led to and sees with fresh eyes the lonely life he has built for himself. Can Ebenezer be saved before it’s too late? Various times.

DESCRIPTION:Congregation\, a choral installation\, features large-scale chalk and charcoal portraits of 50 Londoners who have experienced forced displacement from their homelands. The work was co-authored by the 50 portrait sitters – reflecting on their lives in London\, as well as their journeys from more than 25 countries\, including Syria\, Sudan\, Ukraine\, and Afghanistan. The accompanying soundscape is composed by Polyphonia\, with film sequences created in collaboration with filmmaker Ruth Hogben and choreographer Botis Seva.

SUMMARY:McSweeney's Quarterly Issue 80 Signing
DESCRIPTION:For its 80th issue\, the National Magazine Award–winning quarterly McSweeney’s presents a three-ring oversized-school-binder-inspired volume. Clipped into the rings are seven individual book art objects\, including: a grid-ruled sketchbook by Eisner winner Adrian Tomine; an accordion-shaped catalog of 12 flowers by Pulitzer Prize finalist Yiyun Li; a story in the form of an end-of-the-world Scantron questionnaire by Pip Adam; a crossword about being in (and out of) love by Chris Ames; a story by Guggenheim Fellow Lucy Corin in which the protagonist may\, or may not\, be able to eat their students; and a story by Brittany Newell in which the protagonist may\, or may not\, be in love with their dubiously credentialed couples therapist. Plus an excerpt from Kevin Moffett’s National Book Award–longlisted debut novel; the 2025 Stephen Dixon Award–winning story “My Son’s Name Is Not Cassava” by Akhim Alexis; a letter by PEN Translation Prize winner Katrina Dodson circling the unexpected twinned linguistic heritage of Portuguese and Vietnamese; and more letters by Anelise Chen\, Steven Dunn\, and Molly McGhee.

SUMMARY:Men at Work: The Empire State Building and the Untold Story of the Craftsmen who Built It
DESCRIPTION:his new book\, Men at Work: The Empire State Building and the Untold Story of the Craftsmen who Built It\, Glenn Kurtz re-examines the familiar story of the Empire State’s amazing construction from a perspective that has stumped previous researchers: the lives of workers who labored daily on the site. Taking the iconic photographs of Lewis W. Hine\, collected in his 1932 book Men at Work as a starting point\, Kurtz delved into archives\, period newspapers\, and corporate communications to retrieve the identities of the craftsmen that history has seen as “anonymous” symbols. Kurtz sets the Hine portraits in a new light: as specific documentation of the ordinary\, mostly immigrant\, men who built the world’s most famous skyscraper.

SUMMARY:Spiegelman’s Maus and Podwal’s Lamentations with Richard McBee
DESCRIPTION:Art Spiegelman’s Maus: A Survivor’s Tale\, marks an important rupture in the lineage of survivor testimony. It presents a narrative of survivor testimony through the lens of an adult child of a survivor in a highly unorthodox medium\, an early example of the graphic novel or commix format. In 1974\, Mark Podwal — noted author\, illustrator\, and physician — created a spare\, illustrated Book of Lamentations. This complete English translation is graced with 28 black and white reflections\, on the tragic text. Artist and author Richard McBee will discuss both of these works. This program is presented as part of the Museum’s new exhibition Art of Freedom: The Life & Work of Arthur Szyk opening December 7\, 2025.
