SUMMARY:The Primacy of Petronas Towers: Supertalls Go Global
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In 1998 the twin Petronas Towers in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur took the title of “world’s tallest building” away from the United States for the first time. The towers’ developers\, private investors working with the Malaysian government and Petronas\, the national oil company\, sought to create a headquarters and a landmark that would establish KL’s prominence as a commercial and cultural capital. In the design of American architects Cesar Pelli and Fred Clarke\, they found a winning scheme\, paired towers of slender proportions and scalloped spires that suggest both Islamic geometries and temple forms. Like the towers that would proliferate in Asia and the Middle East in the next decade\, Petronas was constructed of high-strength concrete\, supported by massive core and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns. In both structural engineering and iconic imagery\, Petronas pointed the way to the supertalls of the 21st-century.

SUMMARY:New Beginnings: Jewish Refugees After The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:At the conclusion of World War II\, there were millions of refugees in Europe\, including many Holocaust survivors who refused to go home or had no homes to return to. These survivors experienced struggles and successes as they sought to rebuild their lives in the shadow of the Holocaust\, often in Displaced Persons (DP) camps. Tens of thousands emigrated to the United States between 1947 and 1953 and many more found their way to Israel. Join the Museum for a program exploring the stories of these survivors and the lives they lived in the years immediately after the war. The program will feature David Nasaw\, historian and author of The Last Million: Europe’s Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War; Esther Safran Foer\, author of I Want You To Know We’re Still Here: A Post-Holocaust Memoir\, which includes the story of her family’s years in a DP Camp in Germany; and Joseph Berger\, longtime New York Times reporter and editor who authored an account of his own family’s experiences titled Displaced Persons: Growing Up American After the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:Fourteenth Colony: The Forgotten Story of the Gulf South During America's Revolutionary Era
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, historian Mike Bunn offers the first comprehensive history of the British colony of West Florida. For a host of reasons\, including the fact that West Florida did not rebel against the British government\, the colony has long been dismissed as a loyal but inconsequential fringe outpost\, if considered at all. But the colony’s history showcases a tumultuous political scene featuring a halting attempt at instituting representative government; a host of bold and colorful characters; a compelling saga of struggle and perseverance in the pursuit of financial stability; and a dramatic series of battles on land and water which brought about the end of its days under the Union Jack.

SUMMARY:BARE Dance Company Presents SURVEILLANCE2.0
DESCRIPTION:Surveillance2.0 is a voyeuristic experience unpacking the tension around privacy issues highlighted by pandemic life. BARE Dance Company’s completely live production brings new meaning to immersive performance\, creatively using multiple feeds — and even a drone camera– in the theater at Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Cinematic in scope\, with free-moving cameras wielded by the performers\, Surveillance2.0 is inspired by the increased scrutiny of personal spaces during quarantine prompted by platforms like Zoom. With performances at 6pm and 7pm\, each presentation will be unique due to real-time mixing of visual and audio feeds — handled by director Mike Esperanza– and streamed to YouTube Live. The 7pm live-stream will be followed by a brief Q&A with the artists.

SUMMARY:How to Put Dinosaurs in Noah’s Ark – A Glance at the Diversity of Museums in America
DESCRIPTION:Coming in late in the vein of the Western civilization\, American culture is young and vibrant. So are the museums. The most characteristic museums in the United States are not to be found in mega cities like New York or Los Angeles. They rest at the foot of mountains\, amidst the Southern suburbs\, and sometimes in the forgotten corner of a fine college campus. What is important about these hidden gems is that they represent the real America as they are often created and operated by the people who feel dearest to the themes of their museums. Great diversity can be seen in the creation of the seven museums selected for this lecture – The Cloisters\, High Line\, Field Museum of Natural History\, National Firearm Museum\, The Ark Encounter\, Harvard Museum of Natural History\, and Delta Airline Museum. Not only do they vary in topical themes\, but they were owned and run by businessmen\, activists\, scholars\, firms\, and average citizens like us. How do they reflect the social dynamics of American society? What culture outsiders can learn from the making of these museums? These are the questions that Dr. Shen Xincheng will address in this lecture.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Elizabeth Bellak
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Bellak (née Ariana Spiegel) was born in 1930 in Stawki\, Poland. Known as “the Shirley Temple of Poland\,” she was a prominent child actress before World War II who went to live in Warsaw to pursue a career in film. When war broke out\, Ariana and her older sister Renia were visiting their grandparents in the town of Przemyśl. Renia was killed in Przemyśl in 1942\, but Ariana survived and made her way back to Warsaw along with a friend’s father. There\, Ariana was baptized with a new name—Elzbieta—and sent to play a real-life acting role as a Catholic girl at a convent school. After the war\, Elzbieta made her way to New York via Austria\, became “Elizabeth\,” and started a career as a schoolteacher. Years later\, she was miraculously reunited with her sister Renia’s wartime diary\, in which Renia had documented their family’s experiences and shared intimate personal reflections. St. Martin’s Press published it in 2019 as Renia’s Diary and the diary became an international bestseller. Join Elizabeth Bellak for this Stories Survive program exploring her remarkable journey. Bellak will be interviewed by Stephanie Lynne Mason\, a Broadway actress known for leading roles in Fiddler on the Roof and Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish.

SUMMARY:What is Fueling Anti-Asian Hate?
DESCRIPTION:Anti-Asian racism is skyrocketing in the United States. Sadly\, this is not a new phenomenon: for centuries\, American views of China have oscillated between rapturous enchantment and angry disillusionment. In recent years\, American public opinion toward China has plummeted\, and the consequences have been profound. Even as American and Chinese interests have become inexorably intertwined\, the perceived threat of China’s rise makes it a powerful target for American resentment. Have views of China fueled racism in the US? How can we promote greater understanding? Please join us for a conversation on history\, the rise of China\, and bias in America featuring the latest from Pew Research Center on U.S. views of China and a discussion of the roots of anti-Asian racism featuring John Pomfret\, journalist and expert on U.S.-China relations\, and Erika Lee\, one of the nation’s leading immigration and Asian American historians.

SUMMARY:Building Brands: Corporations and Modern Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. As the first in-depth book to explore the role of branding in the design of corporate modernism\, Building Brands re-tells the stories of four corporate headquarters in the context of both business and architectural histories: the PSFS Building by Howe and Lescaze\, the Johnson Wax Building by Frank Lloyd Wright\, Lever House by SOM\, and The Röhm & Haas Building by Pietro Belluschi and George M. Ewing Co. In this illustrated talk on her new book\, Grace Ong Yan describes how clients and architects together crafted buildings to reflect the company’s brand\, focusing on carefully considering consumers’ perception and their emotions towards the architecture and the messages they communicated.

SUMMARY:Growing Up Jewish: Art And Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline Kott-Wolle is a contemporary artist in Highland Park\, Illinois whose paintings explore the people and experiences that have shaped her distinctly North American brand of Jewish identity. These people include Holocaust survivors like Kott-Wolle’s parents and others in her community growing up. “They existed in living color for me – in their printed sundresses\, socks and sandals\, with numbers tattooed on their arms\,” she writes. “Some of them had haunted looks in their eyes and seemed burdened with a profound sadness that kept them at the edge of anger while others were brimming with gratitude and optimism as they rebuilt their lives in Canada. All of them viewed my generation as walking miracles on earth.” Join Kott-Wolle for a presentation and discussion of “Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling\,” a series of 35 oil paintings and stories about Jewish identity in North America and how it transmits from one generation to the next.

SUMMARY:En Garde Arts' A Dozen Dreams

We are bringing their dreams to life in an immersive installation of sets\, lights\, video\, and sound. SUMMARY:“Citizen 865: The Hunt For Hitler’s Hidden Soldiers In America” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join former Museum Director Dr. David G. Marwell (Mengele: Unmasking the Angel of Death) for a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Debbie Cenziper about her new book Citizen 865: The Hunt for Hitler’s Hidden Soldiers in America. This powerful\, character-driven story recounts the search for the SS trainees who helped murder 1.7 million Polish Jews and later hid in plain sight in cities and suburbs across America. It was at a dinner party in Washington D.C. when Cenziper first learned of the Office of Special Investigations (OSI)\, a small unit in a far- flung office inside the Department of Justice\, tasked with prosecuting Nazi war criminals who fled to the United States after World War II. And she found that the story of one crucial investigation – spanning more than two decades and among the department’s greatest achievements – had never been told. The conversation will follow with audience Q&A.

SUMMARY:The Black Skyscraper: Architecture and the Perception of Race
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In her book The Black Skyscraper: Architecture and the Perception of Race (JHUP\, 2019)\, Adrienne Brown examines works produced by writers\, painters\, architects\, and laborers who grappled with the early skyscraper’s outsized and disorienting dimensions. She explores its effects on how race was seen\, read\, and sensed at the turn of the twentieth century. A highly interdisciplinary work\, The Black Skyscraper breaks new ground in analyzing the influence of race on modern architectural design\, as well as considering the effects of these designs on the experience and perception of race.
