SUMMARY:Transforming Moments: A Conversation With Diane Von Furstenberg
DESCRIPTION:Before she was an international fashion icon and a member of the TIME 100\, Diane von Furstenberg was a young girl growing up with parents who had just survived the Holocaust. Her father\, originally from Moldova\, escaped the Nazis in Switzerland. Her mother\, originally from Greece\, fought the Nazis as a member of the resistance until she was captured and sent to Auschwitz. Join the Museum for a conversation with von Furstenberg about her identity as the daughter of survivors and how it has informed her remarkable career at the helm of one of the world’s most recognizable brands. She will be in conversation with Dr. Eva Fogelman\, renowned psychologist and author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:Sustainable: Moving Beyond ESG to Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:The global economy is at a crossroads. Can finance fix it? Proponents of environmental\, social and governance (ESG) investing say yes. They claim that new financial strategies that consider all stakeholders are essential tools for addressing runaway carbon emissions and stark income inequality\, among other ills. ESG-integrated investments already encompass more than $120 trillion in financial assets. Is this approach really leading to better social and environmental outcomes for all? If not\, how can it be improved? In Sustainable\, a finance-industry veteran offers an insider’s look at the promises\, prospects and limitations of ESG investing and provides comprehensive solutions that would promote more optimal outcomes. Terrence Keeley argues that both activist and C-suite advocates have been overly optimistic about what ESG can accomplish. Divestment threats are ineffective tools for altering corporate behavior\, and verifiably “good” companies do not systematically generate great returns. Most importantly\, business and finance cannot achieve inclusive\, sustainable growth on their own: regulators\, public policies\, civil society and individuals must all play specific\, complementary roles to shape the future we need.

SUMMARY:Buried Beneath the City: An Archaeological History of New York
DESCRIPTION:Book presentation. Bits and pieces of the lives led long before the age of skyscrapers are scattered throughout New York City\, found in backyards\, construction sites\, street beds\, and parks. Indigenous tools used thousands of years ago; wine jugs from a seventeenth-century tavern; a teapot from Seneca Village\, the nineteenth-century Black settlement displaced by Central Park; raspberry seeds sown in backyard Brooklyn gardens—these everyday objects are windows into the city’s forgotten history. Buried Beneath the City uses urban archaeology to retell the history of New York\, from the deeper layers of the past to the topsoil of recent events.

SUMMARY:Selected Music and Songs from Shanghai Sonatas – a new musical
DESCRIPTION:China Institute is partnering with Shanghai Sonatas to present Selected Music and Songs from Shanghai Sonatas – a new musical about the Jewish refugee musicians from Nazi Germany who brought classical music to Shanghai and their connection to the millions of classical musicians of Chinese descent today. Based on the memoirs of Jewish refugee musicians who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Shanghai in the 1930s and ’40s\, Shanghai Sonatas shares how music helped them to survive the war and how they taught classical music to the local Chinese. Today\, countless classical musicians of Chinese descent become the driving force of the field worldwide. China has millions of music students who are directly or indirectly related to this part of the history. The Juilliard School opened its only overseas campus in China in 2019 while the Philadelphia Orchestra now tours China almost annually\, as the first western orchestra to visit China in 1973.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: The Extraordinary Life of Yaffa Eliach with Smadar Rosensweig
DESCRIPTION:Yaffa Eliach (née Sonenson) was born on May 31\, 1935 in Eišiškès\, Lithuania. She was just six years old when German soldiers invaded her hometown and massacred the Jewish population. Yaffa and her family survived in hiding\, and after WWII Yaffa moved to Israel\, where she spent the rest of her childhood and met her husband\, David Eliach. The couple moved to New York City in 1954\, where Yaffa earned her Ph.D. and became a professor at Brooklyn College. Then\, in 1974\, Dr. Eliach opened the Center for Holocaust Studies\, Documentation and Research–the first organization in the United States dedicated to the study of the Holocaust. This groundbreaking project merged with the Museum on August 2\, 1990\, and thanks to the Center’s impressive community outreach\, its collection provided a robust and unique collection of materials to the Museum and the world. Join the Museum for a discussion about Yaffa Eliach’s life and work with her daughter\, Smadar Rosensweig.

SUMMARY:Empire of Pain
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Radden Keefe Presents Empire of Pain in conversation with Ginia Bellafante. The history of the Sackler dynasty is rife with drama—baroque personal lives; bitter disputes over estates; fistfights in boardrooms; glittering art collections; Machiavellian courtroom maneuvers; and the calculated use of money to burnish reputations and crush the less powerful. The Sackler name has adorned the walls of many storied institutions—Harvard\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Oxford\, the Louvre. They are one of the richest families in the world\, but the source of the family fortune was vague—until it emerged that the Sacklers were responsible for making and marketing a blockbuster painkiller that was the catalyst for the opioid crisis. Empire of Pain is the saga of three generations of a single family and the mark they would leave on the world\, a tale that moves from the bustling streets of early twentieth-century Brooklyn to the seaside palaces of Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and Cap d’Antibes to the corridors of power in Washington\, D.C. It follows the family’s early success with Valium to the much more potent OxyContin\, marketed with a ruthless technique of co-opting doctors\, influencing the FDA\, downplaying the drug’s addictiveness. Empire of Pain chronicles the multiple investigations of the Sacklers and their company\, and the scorched-earth legal tactics that the family has used to evade accountability.

SUMMARY:Marriage\, Divorce\, I Love You?
DESCRIPTION:Marriage is the foundation of a Chinese family. As the Chinese saying goes: a harmonious family prospers everything (家和万事兴). It used to be the norm that once people marry\, they should never divorce – they should try everything possible to maintain the marriage and make the family “harmonious.” However\, as the Chinese society evolves rapidly in recent decades\, the divorce rate in China has increased about 10-fold from 1979-2019. To cope with that\, China passed a law in 2020 to mandate a 30-day “cooling off” period before formalizing a divorce. The divorce rate dropped drastically after the law went into effect\, but it sparked anger especially among women and deterred young people from getting married. What has been causing the rising demand to untie the knot in China? Do marriage and family still hold the foundational value for Chinese nowadays? How would the change of the law affect men and women differently? Join us in the conversation with two experts in this field and tell us what you think at China Institute.

SUMMARY:Maya Deren: Choreographed for Camera
DESCRIPTION:Drama and myth frame the life and death of Maya Deren. Born in Kiev in 1917\, at the start of the Russian Revolution\, she died forty-four years later in New York City. In her brief life\, she established herself as a pioneering experimental filmmaker\, prolific writer\, accomplished photographer\, and crusader for a personal and poetic cinema. With its dreamy circular narrative and enigmatic imagery\, her first film\, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)\, has inspired generations of artists\, filmmakers\, and poets. Deren collaborated with numerous mid-century cultural luminaries\, including Katherine Dunham\, Marcel Duchamp\, John Cage\, Anais Nin\, and Gregory Bateson. In 1953\, she published Divine Horsemen\, a ground-breaking ethnographic study of Haitian religious culture. Although Deren completed only six short films in her lifetime\, her impact on the history of cinema is immeasurable. She has become the patron saint of 20th century experimental film. The aura that suffuses Deren’s legend emanates from the power of her films\, magnified by her bohemian glamour and visionary intelligence. This is the first full biography of Deren. Based on years of research\, interviews with some of Deren’s closest collaborators\, and generously illustrated with film stills and photographs\, author Mark Alice Durant creates a vivid and accessible narrative exploring the complexities and contradictions in the life and work of this remarkable and charismatic artist.
