SUMMARY:The Forward Presents: “Playing Anne Frank”
DESCRIPTION:In person and livestreamed. The Diary of Anne Frank\, which debuted on Broadway in 1955 and then later toured the country\, was one of the most influential plays of the 20th century. A life-changing experience for many of those who saw it\, the play introduced millions of Americans to the Holocaust and its victims. But what did reenacting Anne’s story mean to the people who created and acted in the play or the 1959 film? How did dramatizing her life affect their lives and careers? Who were they? Using archival material and interviews with surviving cast and crew members\, Forward executive editor Adam Langer\, whose latest work is Cyclorama\, presents a story in “Playing Anne Frank\,” a limited series podcast from the Forward\, that’s never been told: the backstory of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play and Oscar-winning film\, and how this iconic work shapes those involved in performing it — including high school students putting the show on today. The event will include live elements from the podcast and appearances by members of the 1955 Broadway production.

SUMMARY:Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Lecture. Between 1776 and 1783\, Great Britain hired more than thirty thousand German soldiers to fight in its war against the American rebels. Collectively known as Hessians\, the soldiers and accompanying civilians\, including hundreds of women and children\, spent extended periods of time in locations as dispersed and varied as Canada in the North and West Florida in the South. In this presentation\, Friederike Baer highlights some of the key experiences of these participants in a war on a distant continent against a people that had done them no harm. SUMMARY:Power and Prediction: The Disruptive Economics of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted many industries around the world—banking and finance\, pharmaceuticals\, automotive\, medical technology\, manufacturing and retail. But it has only just begun its odyssey toward cheaper\, better and faster predictions that drive strategic business decisions. When prediction is taken to the max\, industries transform\, and with such transformation comes disruption. What is at the root of this? In their bestselling first book\, Prediction Machines\, eminent economists Ajay Agrawal\, Joshua Gans and Avi Goldfarb explained the simple yet game-changing economics of AI. Now\, in Power and Prediction\, they go deeper\, examining the most basic unit of analysis: the decision. The authors explain that the two key decision-making ingredients are prediction and judgment\, and we perform both together in our minds\, often without realizing it. The rise of AI is shifting prediction from humans to machines\, relieving people from this cognitive load while increasing the speed and accuracy of decisions.

SUMMARY:South Bronx Rising: The Rise\, Fall\, and Resurrection of an American City
DESCRIPTION:Livestreamed. Thirty-five years after this landmark of urban history – originally titled We’re Still Here in a 1986 first edition – Jill Jonnes continues to chronicle the rise\, fall\, rebirth\, and ongoing revival of the South Bronx. The once-thriving New York City borough\, ravaged in the 1970s and ’80s by disinvestment and fires\, then heroically revived and rebuilt in the 1990s by community activists\, has been Jonnes’s subject in three editions\, expanding the first South Bronx Rising (2000) in 2022. Though now globally renowned as the birthplace of hip-hop\, the South Bronx remains America’s poorest urban congressional district. In this new edition\, Jonnes describes the present generation of activists who are transforming their communities with the arts and greening\, notably the restoration of the Bronx River. For better or worse\, real estate investors have noticed\, setting off new gentrification struggles.

SUMMARY:Mao and Markets: The Communist Roots of Chinese Enterprise
DESCRIPTION:Lecture. China’s growth over the past four decades has positioned state capitalism as a durable foil to the orthodoxy of free markets\, to the confusion of many in the West. How are capitalism and entrepreneurship practiced in Xi’s “China Model”? How much of the Chinese economic miracle could be credited to Maoist ideology? What implications does it have for American business engagement with China? Enjoy an intriguing conversation between Christopher Marquis\, Sinyi Professor of Chinese Management at the University of Cambridge and James Heimowitz\, President of China Institute\, on Christopher’s new book Mao and Markets: The Communist Roots of Chinese Enterprise.

SUMMARY:Turkey at a Crossroads: The 2023 Earthquake\, Election\, and Centennial
DESCRIPTION:On February 6\, 2023\, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck northern Syria and southern Turkey\, killing over 49\,000 and displacing millions. The government’s response exposed pitfalls in Turkey’s political system and the state of the country in the lead-up to the May 2023 election. As Turkey is gearing up to celebrate the centennial of the modern Republic\, Museum Director Clifford Chanin is joined by Soli Özel\, Professor of International Relations at Kadir Has University\, for a discussion about the rapidly unfolding events in Turkey. Özel reflects on how the events of 9/11 and the Arab Spring affected Turkey’s standing in the Middle East and relations with the West and what the future might hold for Turkey’s evolving political and national identity.

SUMMARY:Saving a National Treasure - the Story of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1781\, after spying on the British troops in Manhattan for six weeks\, General Washington and General Rochambeau made a critical decision. They would not attack the British in New York but instead would take their troops across the Hudson River and march to Yorktown\, Virginia to confront General Cornwallis’ army in the South. That decision changed the war and it happened at Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters. In the spring of 2020\, The Town of Greenburgh\, NY\, at the urging and leadership of Susan Seal took possession of Odell House to save it from collapse. Amazingly\, this house\, listed on the National Register\, retains most of its original details and it is now in the process of restoration. By 2026\, in time for the 250th commemoration of the Declaration of Independence\, it will be open to the public as a museum. In person and via Zoom.

DESCRIPTION:The Paradox Docs series features contradictory yet fascinating stories from unlikely sources. Daguerréotypes (1976)\, directed by Agnès Varda\, is a portrait of the stores and shopkeepers of the Rue Daguerre in Paris. SUMMARY:Dr. Kaboom & The Wheel of Science
DESCRIPTION:So much science\, so little time. . . Doktor Kaboom is having trouble picking his favorite science demonstrations\, so he’s bringing them all! Unfortunately\, there are way too many to do them all in one show. The solution: The Wheel of Science! Doktor Kaboom has built a great big spinning wheel and labeled it with everything from optical illusions to chemical reactions to a homemade hovercraft\, and more! At least a dozen fantastic demonstrations ready to go. Wherever the wheel stops\, that’s what’s next! Will we turn a water bottle into a rocket or catapult bananas across the stage? Electrocute a pickle or create artificial gravity? Who knows? No two shows will be the same. So\, step right up\, and let’s spin that wheel. Ages 8+. Various times. See website.

SUMMARY:The 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: Resistance and Survival in the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The 80th anniversary of the beginning of the momentous Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is on April 19th this year. In this talk\, Dr. Zachary Mazur will reflect on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising as a powerful example of Jewish resistance and action in the face of Nazi oppression during the Holocaust. Mazur’s presentation draws upon never-before-seen sources and images that were discovered in the process of preparing the POLIN Museum’s temporary exhibition Around Us a Sea of Fire\, which addresses the civilian experience in bunkers and hideouts during the Uprising.

SUMMARY:The Peking Express –The Bandits Who Stole a Train\, Stunned the West\, and Broke the Republic of China
DESCRIPTION:In May 1923\, when Shanghai publisher and Chicago Tribune reporter John Benjamin Powell bought a first-class ticket for the Peking Express\, he pictured an idyllic overnight journey on a brand-new train of unprecedented luxury—exactly what the advertisements promised. Seeing his fellow passengers\, including the mysterious Italian lawyer Giuseppe Musso (a confidante of Mussolini and lawyer for the opium trade); American heiress Lucy Aldrich\, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller\, Jr.; and other prominent travelers\, he was certain it would be the trip of a lifetime. He was right\, but for reasons he could not have guessed. The Peking Express\, brilliantly recreated with new and original research\, tells the unforgettable true story of a clash that shocked the world—becoming so celebrated that it inspired several Hollywood movies—and set the course for China’s two-decade civil war.

SUMMARY:Spring Theater with The Braid: Remembrance of Things Present
DESCRIPTION:In person and livestreamed. The story of the Holocaust continues far past liberation. Those born in the generations that followed especially feel the deep and resounding imprint in all aspects of their lives. In these surprisingly inspiring and heart-opening stories\, we learn how the daughter of a French resistance fighter must choose between a life of activism and her own survival. We see how the son and grandson of Tuvia Bielsky\, leader of the partisans\, contend with the legacy of a hero. We’ll see the unexpected fear one grandson feels as he visits his family’s home in Germany\, 65 years after his family fled the Nazis. As one daughter wonders if the price of encouraging her father to give testimony is greater than the benefit. Victims of the Holocaust are mourned\, and those who survived have imprinted the next generations in innumerable ways.
