SUMMARY:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try
DESCRIPTION:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is a first-of-its-kind exhibition on the 20th-century artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. Centered around his earliest work\, the so-called War Series\, as well as never-before-exhibited objects and ephemera from Lurie’s personal archive\, the exhibition presents a portrait of an artist reckoning with devastating trauma\, haunting memories\, and an elusive\, lifelong quest for freedom. In drawing together artistic practice and historical chronicle\, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is fertile new territory for the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, offering a survivor’s searing visual testimony within a significant art historical context. The Museum is open Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Sunday from 11 AM – 7 PM ET through October 17. The Museum is closed on Jewish holidays and on Thanksgiving. As of October 18\, the Museum will be open Sunday and Wednesday: 10 AM to 5 PM; Thursday\, 10 AM to 8 PM; and Friday\, 10 AM to 3 PM.

Her mother\, originally from Greece\, fought the Nazis as a member of the resistance until she was captured and sent to Auschwitz. Join the Museum for a conversation with von Furstenberg about her identity as the daughter of survivors and how it has informed her remarkable career at the helm of one of the world’s most recognizable brands. She will be in conversation with Dr. Eva Fogelman\, renowned psychologist and author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust.

DESCRIPTION:In person or online program. Young learners will be introduced to the basics of architecture through a group reading of Andrea Beaty’s popular picture book Iggy Peck\, Architect. After the story\, the young architects will use different materials and existing skyscraper parts to design their very own building. All ages. RSVP required. DESCRIPTION:1912 marked an important turning point in Chinese history\, when the imperial period that lasted for more than 2000 years uninterrupted came to a crashing end and a new republic\, the first of its kind in China\, came into being. On January 1\, 1912\, a band-new provisional government was established and seated in Nanjing with Dr. Sun Yat-sen as the President\, ushering a new modern era for the Middle Kingdom without a monarch. However\, the year of 1912 was rife with twists and turns\, with Sun Yat-sen giving up his presidency to Yuan Shikai and the capital moved to Beijing four months later. To look back at the epoch-making but also tumultuous time period 110 years ago\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture by Prof. Jiang Liangqin\, a renowned scholar at Nanjing University specializing in the Republican era on January 8\, to discuss events that unfolded prior\, during and following 1912.
