SUMMARY:Voices of Peace
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Church presents “Voices of Peace” featuring the Jerusalem Youth Chorus: young Palestinians and Israelis who use the power of words and music to foster dialogue\, understanding\, and empathy – even in the worst of times. SUMMARY:Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World in Predictable and Surprising Ways
DESCRIPTION:We don’t always consider the powerful impact that the War of Independence had on the physical landscape of 18th century America – much less how those impacts might still be seen and felt today. Join Professor David C. Hsiung for fascinating insights into the lasting legacies of the Revolution on the natural world\, including deforestation at Valley Forge\, raids that seized animals but also produced some surprisingly “positive” effects\, and lead musket balls left on battlefields that may only now be poisoning the land.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive – Imagining Jewish Futures in World War II Labor Camps: A Gendered Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in late 1940\, over three thousand Jewish girls and young women were forced from their family homes in Sosnowiec\, Poland and its surrounding towns to worksites in Germany. Believing that they were helping their families to survive\, these young people were thrust into a world where they labored at textile work for twelve hours a day\, lived in barracks with little food\, and received only periodic news of events back home. By late 1943\, their barracks had been transformed into concentration camps\, where they were held until liberation in 1945. Reconstructing their experiences from their own testimonies\, this talk with Dr. Janine Holc\, based on her book The Weavers of Tratenau\, will explore how these teenaged girls and young unmarried women conceived of their future while they were held in these camps – how they supported each other and sustained their senses of themselves as Jews with a past\, present\, and future – while only gradually facing the reality of what had happened to Jewish life in Europe.

SUMMARY:Sibling Rivalry Press: Family Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Join Sibling Rivalry Press founding publisher Bryan Borland\, editor-in-chief Seth Pennington\, and a spectrum of SRP-published writers from a decade of defiance that changed the face of American poetry. SRP\, was\, from the start\, a family affair\, and its readers and audiences have always been a big part of that family. That’s why\, for their first event in four years\, SRP is gathering at Poets House for readings and a family reunion\, and you’re invited. Their tagline\, “Disturb and Enrapture\,” is especially apt now. Queer writers and their allies have been deeply involved in every struggle for social justice. As they gather for this look back\, they’ll also look to the future and a world where art can pave the way for liberation and healing for all people worldwide\, from the US to Palestine to Sudan to Ukraine\, and beyond. Join SRP in this spirit of solidarity\, community\, renewal\, and yes\, poetry\, queer joy\, and how chosen family can build bridges\, save lives\, and change the world.

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Falling: A Life in Pursuit of Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Join author Claudia de Rham and the Academy’s Chief Scientific Officer Brooke Grindlinger as they delve into the hidden facets of gravity’s true nature—and de Rham’s new book\, The Beauty of Falling: A Life in Pursuit of Gravity. De Rham has devoted her life to unraveling the secrets of gravity—first as a diver and pilot\, and then as an astronaut candidate seeking the thrill of escaping Earth’s gravitational pull. As a physicist\, she has pushed the limits of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity\, developing a rigorous and viable theory of “massive gravity\,” in doing so completing a decades-old quest and profoundly impacting our understanding of many fundamental problems in cosmology and particle physics. De Rham unveils the profound influence of brilliant intellects\, spanning from luminaries like Newton and Einstein to the contemporary minds of Stephen Hawking\, Andrea Ghez\, and Roger Penrose. These great thinkers guided her to the brink of understanding the intricate nature of this fundamental force\, which not only shapes the cosmos but also plays a crucial role in keeping our feet firmly grounded on Earth.

SUMMARY:What If the Fungi Win?
DESCRIPTION:Join author Arturo Casadevall and the Academy’s Chief Scientific Officer Brooke Grindlinger as they dive into the dual nature of fungi—beneficial allies and deadly foes——and Casadevall’s new book\, What if Fungi Win? Casadevall\, an eminent epidemiologist and inventor\, reveals the shared genetic complexity between humans and fungi and unravels the challenges in designing drugs to combat these relentless assailants. In our increasingly hot and humid world\, fungi are evolving\, posing global outbreak threats. Inspired by the fungal complications during the 1990s AIDS epidemic and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic\, Casadevall leads a research team dedicated to finding innovative ways to counter these cunning adversaries. Casadevall delves into fascinating fungal phenomena\, from their proliferation after the mass dinosaur extinction to the historical connection between the rye fungus ergot and the Salem witch trials\, and the versatile uses of fungi in creating vegan leather\, eco-friendly packaging\, and degrading plastic. Explore the work of scientists assessing fungal risks and safeguarding humanity and our food supplies from these elusive adversaries.

SUMMARY:Sea Chanteys for Work at Sea
DESCRIPTION:Captivating performances in a free mini-workshop that explores the rich musical tradition of sea chanteys—songs used by old-time sailors to facilitate their work at sea. These catchy rhythms served as a unifying force during various tasks like hauling on lines and engaging in labor that required synchronized effort and heave-hos. Step aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree\, where the knowledgeable chantey singer and educator\, Chris Koldewey\, will guide participants to different parts of the vessel. Through interactive demonstrations\, he will showcase how these songs were sung while working with halyards\, at the capstan\, winch\, and more.

SUMMARY:Architecture for Animals
DESCRIPTION:Animals are skillful architects—from beehives to birds’ nests\, animals create spaces best fit for their needs. But now\, they’re moving into the big city! We will dive into the relationship between architects and their clients\, as kids choose their favorite animal and design an apartment based on its needs! Does a giraffe need an apartment with tall ceilings? Kids will use their imaginations to design homes for animal families (like an urban Noah’s Arc!) while considering accessibility\, health\, and views. Recommended for ages 4-10.
