SUMMARY:JC Maillard
DESCRIPTION:JC Maillard\, the creative mind behind the renowned project Grand Baton—famous for its collaboration with Lisa Fischer—continues to chart bold new musical territory with his latest venture: Caribbean Bluegrass. A key figure in the world music movement of the 1980s Paris scene\, he emerged from the dynamic Caribbean and African diasporas that helped redefine the global music map. With Caribbean Bluegrass\, JC brings along the sound of the banjo—an instrument whose journey mirrors his own\, with roots in West Africa\, growth in the Caribbean\, and reinvention in North America—and returns it to a Creole context.

SUMMARY:The Great Miscalculation: The Race to Save New York City’s Citicorp Tower
DESCRIPTION:Thirty years ago a New Yorker article\, “The Fifty-Nine-Story Crisis\,” recounted the little-known drama of the threatened collapse of a Manhattan skyscraper. In a new book\, The Great Miscalculation: The Race to Save New York City’s Citicorp Tower\, author Michael Greenburg further investigates the full story of how in 1978 structural engineer William LeMessurier became aware of a critical flaw in his innovative design and the chain of events and responses that followed. A team of engineers and building experts mobilized to analyze and correct a miscalculation that\, a generation before 9/11\, threatened Midtown Manhattan with a catastrophic collapse of a major tower.

DESCRIPTION:This afternoon\, hear Musikalische Exequien\, op. 7\, by the great German composer Heinrich Schütz\, a funeral piece that parallels the traditional Latin Requiem in expressing mortality\, comfort\, and hope. This collection of motets\, one of the finest choral cycles of the 17th century\, had a far-reaching impact. You’ll note a similar style while listening to Bach’s Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf.
