With two non-disabled performers of Heidi Latsky Dance\, Carmen Schoenster and Judith Garfinkel\, as his “Greek chorus”\, Lawrence boldly exposes both his vulnerability and fierceness in this work. SUMMARY:America’s Refugee Camp: Voices Of Fort Ontario
DESCRIPTION:In 1944\, many Americans were opposed to taking in European refugees who had been displaced by World War II. In the midst of this unwelcoming climate\, 982 refugees\, many of whom were Jewish\, arrived in Oswego\, New York. Here\, they were housed at Fort Ontario\, the United States’ only refugee camp during the war. In order to be allowed to come to the United States\, the refugees had to promise to return to Europe after the war ended. They also faced other difficulties\, such as having no legal status in the United States and being unable to work while in the camp. Join the Museum for a program exploring life at Fort Ontario during World War II. The program will feature an introductory presentation by Rebecca Erbelding\, historian\, archivist\, and curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, followed by a conversation with survivors who lived at Fort Ontario\, moderated by journalist and Columbia professor Keren Blankenfeld.

DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Poland’s nationalist government enacted a law which criminalized speech that holds Poland responsible for Nazi crimes. Forced by international pressure to withdraw the criminal provisions\, nationalists promised instead to use civil litigation to achieve their aims. In 2021\, for the first time\, the law was used to target Holocaust scholars in civil court. As Poles wrestle with their ancestors’ roles during the Holocaust\, observers inside the country and across Europe are sounding alarms over the whitewashing of history. Join the Museum for a conversation about the politics of memory with leaders in Polish civil society\, including Dr. Jan Grabowski\, one of the historians sued for his research; Dr. Dariusz Stola\, the former director of POLIN: Museum of the History of Polish Jews; and Konstanty Gebert\, a journalist and founder of the Polish Jewish monthly Midrasz. The discussion will be co-presented by Descendants of Holocaust Survivors (2G Greater New York) and moderated by Rachel Donadio\, a contributing writer for The Atlantic.

DESCRIPTION:1912 marked an important turning point in Chinese history\, when the imperial period that lasted for more than 2000 years uninterrupted came to a crashing end and a new republic\, the first of its kind in China\, came into being. On January 1\, 1912\, a band-new provisional government was established and seated in Nanjing with Dr. Sun Yat-sen as the President\, ushering a new modern era for the Middle Kingdom without a monarch. However\, the year of 1912 was rife with twists and turns\, with Sun Yat-sen giving up his presidency to Yuan Shikai and the capital moved to Beijing four months later. To look back at the epoch-making but also tumultuous time period 110 years ago\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture by Prof. Jiang Liangqin\, a renowned scholar at Nanjing University specializing in the Republican era on January 8\, to discuss events that unfolded prior\, during and following 1912.

DESCRIPTION:Nate Leipciger was born to a Jewish family in Chorzów\, Poland in 1928. When he was eleven years old\, the Nazis invaded\, and Nate and his family spent the next three years living in ghettos. The family was later deported to Auschwitz\, where Nate was separated from his mother and sister. He would never see them again. By the time he was liberated in 1945\, Nate had survived seven different concentration camps. Nate and his father\, the only remaining survivors of their family\, moved to Canada in 1948. He became a successful engineer\, married\, and had three daughters. Join the Museum for a program exploring Nate’s experiences during the Holocaust.

Serving as an aide-de-camp on General Rochambeau’s staff\, the young and well-educated Lauberdière provided a unique perspective of the war\, including descriptions of the French army’s camp in Newport\, the long march to Yorktown\, the siege and capture\, and a fascinating examination of the people and their distinctive colonial culture. DESCRIPTION:Between 1880 and 1930\, Latin America experienced its largest influx of Jewish immigration. These immigrants were fleeing the poverty and persecution that affected them in Europe. During the lead up to WWII\, more Jewish immigrants arrived to escape the rise of the Nazi regime. This wave of immigrants often came to the region on tourist visas or by pretending they were Catholic. These immigrants arrived in a region that had Jewish communities living in a variety of contexts Some had been established three hundred years before\, while some had only been there for twenty. Nevertheless\, each community was vibrant\, and many are still thriving today. Join the Museum for a program exploring Jews in Latin America. This program will include a conversation between Dr. Marion Kaplan\, the Skirball Professor of Modern Jewish History at New York University; Dr. Yael Siman\, Associate Professor in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the Iberoamericana University\, Mexico; Dr. Leo Spitzer\, the Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor of History Emeritus at Dartmouth College; and Dr. Adriana Brodsky\, Professor of History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the Chinese Communist Party has sought to forcibly assimilate the Uyghur Muslim community in Xinjiang (East Turkistan)\, an autonomous territory in northwest China. The CCP’s violent campaign has involved forced sterilization\, sexual violence\, enslavement\, torture\, and the establishment of vast concentration camps that call to mind Nazi camps a generation earlier. Join the Museum for a program exploring the modern-day genocide occurring in northwest China shortly before China is set to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The program will feature an exclusive\, private screening of In Search of My Sister (2021\, 80 minutes\, English)\, a new film that tells the story of American Uyghur activist Rushan Abbas. Due to Rushan’s public criticism of the CCP\, her sister\, Dr. Gulshan Abbas\, was detained in Chinese camps along with two to three million other Uyghurs. The film chronicles Rushan’s journey as she searches for proof that her sister is alive. Following the film\, the program will feature a panel discussion with Rushan Abbas; Jawad Mir\, the film’s director; and Ruth Messinger\, Global Ambassador and former President of American Jewish World Service.

DESCRIPTION:The Skyscraper Museum returns to its WORLD VIEW lecture series with a coda on the construction of the Merdeka 118 Tower in Kuala Lumpur. In December 2021\, Merdeka 118 lifted its symbolic spire into place and topped out at its full height of 2\,227 ft. or 679 meters to surpass the 632-meter Shanghai Tower and become the second-tallest building in the world. Ahmad Abdelrazaq\, who led the Samsung C & T team as the tower’s contractor\, will present an overview of the structural engineering\, planning\, and construction innovations of the supertall and the key challenges in its design and construction. He will describe the structural system optimization; the construction planning and sequencing; the application and delivery of high-performance concrete; and the application of real-time structural health monitoring\, among other issues

SUMMARY:Nazis On Long Island: The Story Of Camp Siegfried
DESCRIPTION:In 1936\, the German-American Bund\, a pro-Nazi group\, was formed in the United States to advocate for policies beneficial to Germany. The Bund was very active throughout the latter half of the 1930s\, organizing rallies and marches\, including a rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939. One of the Bund’s most notable activities was running summer camps across the nation that were similar to Hitler Youth Camps. Camp Siegfried was located in Yaphank\, New York and attracted numerous visitors. The camp even had its own train on the Long Island Railroad\, the “Siegfried Special.” Join the Museum for a program exploring Camp Siegfried and Nazis in the United States. The program will feature a panel discussion between Bess Wohl\, playwright of Camp Siegfried; Bradley W. Hart\, author of Hitler’s American Friends: The Third Reich’s Supporters in the United States; and Arnie Bernstein\, author of Swastika Nation: Fritz Kuhn & the Rise and Fall of the German-American Bund. The conversation will be moderated by Randi F. Marshall\, Editorial Writer at Newsday.

DESCRIPTION:Young city planners will learn how architects consider the personality of a neighborhood – what designers call the “sense of place.” In small groups we’ll discuss and design a street plan detailing where parks\, places to eat\, shop\, play\, and work areas belong\, as well as what features their ideal city would have. Then young planners will build their own skyscrapers to place in their model city. Ages 6+. RSVP required. This indoor program meets at the Skyscraper Museum\, 39 Battery Pl. SUMMARY:Translating China: Stories of the Pathbreakers
DESCRIPTION:China boasts of a 5000-year civilization\, but for much of the past few millenniums\, the country had been shrouded in mystery due in large part to its lack of communication with the rest of the world. The scarcity of translations of Chinese books\, classic or otherwise\, was a contributing factor to the impasse as well. Mysteries and misunderstandings about China and its culture with its values\, customs and institutions began to be unveiled and corrected in modern times thanks to the masterful translation of Chinese novels and other classics by a group of Westerners who were steeped in the Chinese language and culture. In a recent book on noteworthy Western translators of Chinese literature\, the author Prof. Zhu Zhenwu of Shanghai Normal University\, a renowned translator himself\, provided insights into 20 or so master translators in modern times from the U.S.\, the UK\, Australia and Canada who translated over 300 Chinese literary works\, both classic and modern and brought a side of China rarely known to the English-speaking World.
