SUMMARY:Dao De Jing by Laozi: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times
DESCRIPTION:Written by the Chinese sage Lao Zi around 400 BC\, Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching) is the most important scripture in Chinese culture. All the major schools of thoughts and religions in China\, such as Confucianism\, Taoism and Legalism\, can trace their head-streams to the classic. According to UNESCO\, Dao De Jing is the most circulated book in human history next to the Bible. As such\, it has produced a profound effect worldwide through the millenniums. The Renwen Society presents a lecture on the classic on March 12 by Prof. Alan Du\, a renowned Dao De Jing scholar who recently published an English translation of the book.

SUMMARY:Genius & Anxiety: How Jews Changed The World
DESCRIPTION:In the century between 1847 and 1947\, a handful of men and women changed the world. Many of them are well known—Marx\, Freud\, Proust\, Einstein\, Kafka. Others have vanished from collective memory despite their enduring importance in our daily lives. Without Rosalind Franklin\, for example\, genetic science would look very different. Without Fritz Haber\, there would not be enough food to sustain life on earth. What do these visionaries have in common? They all had Jewish origins. Norman Lebrecht has devoted half of his life to researching the mindset of the Jewish intellectuals\, writers\, scientists\, and thinkers who turned the tides of history and shaped the world today as we know it. His conclusions are featured in his book Genius & Anxiety: How Jews Changed the World\, 1847-1947. Join the Museum for a conversation between Lebrecht and Museum Trustee Matthew Goldstein\, former chancellor of the City University of New York\, about Genius & Anxiety. Read the book ahead of time and submit your questions for the program’s Q&A session to pubprog@mjhnyc.org.

SUMMARY:Seeing China Through Film: An Elephant Sitting Still
DESCRIPTION:Watch the film at home\, then enjoy a free virtual talkback with Columbia University Film Professor Richard Peña\, former Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Sure to be remembered as a landmark in Chinese cinema\, this intensely felt epic marks a career cut tragically short: its debut director Hu Bo took his life in October 2017\, at the age of 29. The protagonist of this modern reworking of the tale of Jason and the Argonauts is teenage Wei Bu\, who critically injures a school bully by accident. Over a single\, eventful day\, he crosses paths with a classmate\, an elderly neighbor\, and the bully’s older brother\, all of them bearing their own individual burdens\, and all drawn as if by gravity to the city of Manzhouli\, where a mythical elephant is said to sit\, indifferent to a cruel world. Full of moody close-ups and virtuosic tracking shots\, An Elephant Sitting Still is nothing short of a masterpiece.

SUMMARY:The Bond King by Mary Childs
DESCRIPTION:Book launch. From the host of NPR’s Planet Money\, the deeply-investigated story of how one visionary\, dogged investor changed American finance forever. Before Bill Gross was known among investors as the Bond King\, he was a gambler. In 1966\, a fresh college grad\, he went to Vegas armed with his net worth ($200) and a knack for counting cards. $10\,000 and countless casino bans later\, he was hooked: so he enrolled in business school. The Bond King is the story of how that whiz kid made American finance his casino. Over the course of decades\, Bill Gross turned the sleepy bond market into a destabilized game of high risk\, high reward; founded Pimco\, one of today’s most powerful\, secretive\, and cutthroat investment firms; helped to reshape our financial system in the aftermath of the Great Recession—to his own advantage; and gained legions of admirers\, and enemies\, along the way. Like every American antihero\, his ambition would also be his undoing.

SUMMARY:FOUNDATIONS: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Chicago and New York offered a handful of very different preconditions that influenced the way skyscrapers were designed and built in the two cities. Chicago’s murky soil forced engineers to carefully parse their structures into point supports and broad\, snowshoe-like pads\, which suggested structures above could be thought of as more skeletal frames than continuous walls. The city’s large\, regular lot sizes also allowed a regularity in structural grids\, and its laissez-faire politics permitted thinner walls than other\, eastern cities—at least through 1893\, after which unions and builders began a pitched battle over the city’s building code. The first session of the Construction History series focuses on Foundations to consider a “ground up” understanding about how buildings were constructed in each city\, given the local conditions. Although Manhattan had abundant bedrock\, even some of the tallest 19th-century skyscrapers did not rely on it. Small lots and slender towers were common conditions in the dense financial district\, whereas Chicago’s big blocks and soft soil posed different problems.

SUMMARY:From Chengdu: Stories of the Legendary Zhuge Liang
DESCRIPTION:A legendary historical figure in the Three Kingdom period (220-280)\, Zhuge Liang (181-234) is recognized as the most accomplished and admired military strategist of his era\, first as the chancellor to Emperor Liu Bei of the state of Shu and later as the regent of the Kingdom. As a recognition of his contributions to Shu\, Zhuge Liang was granted by the emperor the title of “Wuxiang Hou” (Marquis Wuxiang) in his lifetime. After his death\, a memorial temple by the name of Wuhou Shrine was built in the city of Chengdu\, the capital of Shu\, to honor him. The shrine is one of Chengdu’s major attractions and houses numerous statues to Emperor Liu Bei\, Zhuge Liang and other generals and officials of the Shu Kingdom. The Wuhou Shrine was turned into a full-scale museum in 1984\, serving as a major Three Kingdom heritage site and research center. On March 26\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture by Mr. Li Zhi\, Chief Docent of the Wuhou Shrine Museum\, who will relate to the audience stories of Zhuge Liang and the famed shrine. In his capacity as the Chief Docent of the museum\, Mr. Li has received many awards and appeared on many feature programs on TV. In 2020\, he was named one of “The Top Ten Narrators of National Treasures of China”. Mr. Li will be delivering the lecture from within the Wuhou Shrine Museum.

SUMMARY:FRAMES: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The second session of the Construction History series concentrates on Frames and the evolution of metal-cage construction in each city. Chicago has claimed the “invention” of steel-skeleton construction\, which historians often call “the Chicago frame.” In New York\, building codes and concerns about fire discouraged the use of skeleton frames until after 1892\, so alternative\, hybrid systems developed. Tom Leslie and Don Friedman will examine these and other issues. Chicago and New York offered a handful of very different preconditions that influenced the way skyscrapers were designed and built in the two cities. Chicago’s murky soil forced engineers to carefully parse their structures into point supports and broad\, snowshoe-like pads\, which suggested structures above could be thought of as more skeletal frames than continuous walls. It was the first of many agricultural colonies founded by Jews who fled the Russian Empire’s persecution especially. SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Ann Kliger Axelrod
DESCRIPTION:April’s Stories Survive program features Ann Kliger Axelrod. Ann was born Elizabeth Benedikt on August 25\, 1929 in Budapest\, Hungary. On March 18\, 1944\, when Ann was 14 years old\, the Nazis invaded Hungary and forced Jews to obey the degrading laws that were already in place in Germany. On April 5\, the photo of Ann above was taken by Hungarians at German headquarters in Budapest for her identification. April 5 was also the date when the Jewish Hungarian labor battalions\, including Ann’s brother Lazlo\, were sent to the Russian front. It was the last day that Ann saw her brother. Ann became one of a number of teenage Jewish girls issued a “schutzpasse” by Raoul Wallenberg and put up in a Swedish safe house. After escaping from a transport to Bergen-Belsen with other children\, Ann went to the Budapest ghetto\, where she received false papers from a family friend. Using these papers\, Ann was able to leave the ghetto on November 1944\, and hid with her mother in a bombed-out hotel until Budapest was liberated by the Russians. After the war\, Ann met her husband Shaja Kliger in a bread line in Budapest. They moved to Italy\, where her son Jack\, who is now President of the Museum\, and her daughter Lea were born. In 1948 the family moved to the United States. Here the family lived in Brooklyn\, New York\, where she had her third child\, Stella. Ann now has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ann will be interviewed by Rick Salomon\, a co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

SUMMARY:How Language Helped Shape China’s Rise
DESCRIPTION:What was the biggest obstacle to China’s modernization as the Qing Dynasty collapsed? The Chinese language\, according to Yale University Professor Jing Tsu. Back then\, literacy was reserved for the elite few\, and the system of calligraphy was far too complicated for the technological revolution that was sweeping the world. Join Professor Tsu as she explores the century-long fight to make the Chinese language accessible to the modern world of global trade and digital technology. Drawing on her new book\, Kingdom of Characters\, Tsu will share her perspective on the linguistic advances that helped fuel China’s meteoric rise.

SUMMARY:9/11 and America’s Standing in the World
DESCRIPTION:The events of 9/11 profoundly transformed how the United States engages with the rest of the world. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton was at the forefront of that transformation\, first as a senator from New York (2001-2009) and then as secretary of state (2009-2013) in the Obama administration. In this conversation with 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Executive Vice President and Deputy Director for Museum Programs Clifford Chanin\, Secretary Clinton reflects upon the attacks\, the power and limitations of diplomacy in the ensuing two decades\, and what the future might hold for American foreign policy. The program is at capacity and tickets are no longer available. For those unable to attend\, the event will be broadcast live\, with captioning\, at 911memorial.org/watch.
