SUMMARY:Soka Tira Osoa: High Wire Performance
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Down to Earth International Festival of Multidisciplinary Performance in Public Spaces\, Seaport Square and Pier 16 will transform into a stage for the sky. Join the Seaport Museum and The Seaport for a breathtaking\, one-night-only performance by French acrobatic troupe Compagnie Basinga and internationally renowned tightrope artist Tatiana-Mosio Bongonga. In Soka Tira Osoa—meaning “pulling the rope”—Cie Basinga invites the audience into their reimagining of the traditional tug-of-war as a powerful act of collaboration. With the help of volunteers\, the artists and audience will work together to stabilize the high wire\, forming a unique bond of trust and shared effort. Then\, all eyes will turn skyward as Tatiana-Mosio Bongonga\, one of the world’s few women high-wire walkers\, takes center stage—alone\, on a wire\, high above the ground. Accompanied by live music and the rhythmic energy of the crowd\, Tatiana’s awe-inspiring crossing will blend delicate precision with poetic grace in a performance that celebrates the importance of collective endeavor in creating togetherness and hope.

SUMMARY:Fresh Prints
DESCRIPTION:This open house will feature a breadth of printing equipment that you will be invited to use. You’ll get to see how the designers at Bowne lock up limited edition designs that showcase some of the more eccentric parts from the Seaport Museum’s printing and graphic arts collection. Established in 1775\, the original Bowne & Co.\, Inc. was one of New York’s oldest printing firms. The Bowne & Co. that you can experience today at the Seaport Museum is an offshoot of the original and continues the age-old tradition of job (or small batch) printing.

SUMMARY:Shifting Paths Screening and Talkback
DESCRIPTION:Shifting Paths examines the loss and survival of one family through the period of the early Jewish Boycott in 1933 in Frankfurt\, Germany seeing the loss of a beloved family owned pharmaceutical company and the need for the family to change paths. It traces how one chamomile product\, Kamillosan\, banned in 1933\, has survived till today with few knowing anything of its history. Arthur Abelmann had a passion for finding solutions to help people feel better. He went from being a chemist apothecary in a prisoner of war camp at the end of WWI to taking over a candy factory in Frankfurt to start making medicinal tablets. His dream of creating something for his son to take over went astray with the rise of Nazism and the banning of all Jewish Products. The film traces that history and how one product is still used today – a healing ointment\, Kamillosan – that was being produced at his factory in 1932. The screening will be followed by a talkback with Director and Producer Charles Abelmann.

SUMMARY:Passwords: Mark Wunderlich on Mary Ruefle
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the closing of Erasures: Mary Ruefle\, join us for a craft talk on Ruefle’s work from the poet Mark Wunderlich. Beginning in 1998 and continuing as part of her ongoing work\, former Vermont State Poet Laureate Mary Ruefle has produced a series of altered books from which she creates poetic texts in a process called erasure\, which Ruefle has defined as an act of “creating a new text by disappearing the old text that surrounds it.” Using correction fluid\, markers\, and gouache\, and often incorporating collaged found images\, the original texts are partially covered over to reveal new and surprising voices\, phrases\, narratives\, and fragmented poems.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Anne
DESCRIPTION:From Anne Frank Center USA comes Conversations with Anne: a one-act solo show that immerses students in the powerful words of Anne Frank\, bringing excerpts from her diary to life in an engaging and emotionally-charged performance. Students connect with Anne on a personal level through this intimate portrayal – hearing her thoughts\, fears\, and dreams. The performance culminates in a Q&A session\, where students can ask questions and engage directly with the character to deepen their understanding of Anne’s experience and the historical events surrounding the Holocaust. More than just a history lesson—it’s a transformative experience that invites students to step into the shoes of one of the most important voices of the 20th century.

SUMMARY:People of the Image: Jews and Art
DESCRIPTION:The Middle Ages provide us with one of the richest repositories of art in the West. Yet the rise in the production of art made for and by Jews―especially in the form of illuminated manuscripts―is often neglected in general surveys or viewed as a mere emulation of Christian art during this period. In People of the Image\, Marc Michael Epstein demonstrates how medieval Jews transformed their visual art into a vital site of critical commentary.

SUMMARY:Queens: A History of the Most Diverse Place on Earth
DESCRIPTION:In his new book\, Queens: A History of the Most Diverse Place on Earth\, prolific author Lawrence R. Samuel charts the historical development of the New York City borough from the 1920s to today. Samuel’s narrative traces the evolution of Queens from a quasi-suburb of Manhattan for the white middle class into\, today\, the most diverse multiethnic\, multiracial\, and multireligious county in the United States. From the leafy enclaves of Forest Hills Gardens and Sunnyside to the transformations of Flushing Meadows\, Samuel focuses on the residential development that has become home to more than 2.4 million New Yorkers. As he argues\, following the trajectory of Queens adds much to our understanding of the city\, the country\, and the world.

SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism: “All Consuming”
DESCRIPTION:Meat is one of the most visible markers of Jewish distinctness and social separation. In his book\, All Consuming: Germans\, Jews\, and the Meaning of Meat\, John Efron argues that meat has played an especially important role in the formation of Jewish and Christian identities in Germany from the Middle Ages until today. To an extent not seen elsewhere in Europe\, the importance of meat is reflected in many realms including the visual arts\, literature\, religion\, politics\, commerce\, and home life. Studying the history of meat and its multiple meanings in Germany tells us much about the changing nature of German and German-Jewish identity\, the links between religion\, nationality\, politics\, and food. Above all\, focusing on meat provides us with a singular window into the rich\, fraught\, and ultimately tragic history of German Jewry. Efron will be in conversation about his book with Michael Brenner.
