Following her debut mini-LP 222 and Old Rockhounds Never Die\, which saw her touring her unique one-woman-orchestra performance style — part Jack White rock ‘n’ roll folk blues and part electronic experimentations — she returns with her most assured set of songs to date.

SUMMARY:Lavender Songs: A Queer Weimar Berlin Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:It’s winter 1930 and Tante Fritzy\, cabaret artiste extraordinaire invites you to have a ball in her gender-bender world. Never mind the rising popularity of the guy with the bad moustache. Come and celebrate Berlin’s edgiest cabaret music with the Museum and Tante Fritzy\, whose drag performance captures the Cabaret culture and Weimar wildness that kicked – and continues to kick – the world on its ass. Many of the songs were originally written or performed by queer artists in Weimar era Berlin. The performance piece is based on an evening created by Alan Lareau for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945. The one-person show was originally produced by TOSOS (“The Other Side of Silence”) a theatre company dedicated to preserving the theatrical heritage of the LGBT community.

SUMMARY:The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles after 1945
DESCRIPTION:The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white\, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation – rich\, poor\, Black American\, Latino\, Asian\, immigrant\, the unhoused\, the lavishly housed\, and everyone in between. Nowhere\, writes historian Becky Nicolaides\, are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles\, where stories of everyday suburban life have taken on new inflections. Join us for a webinar on February 20 at 6pm ET as Nicolaides discusses her new book\, The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles after 1945. Based on a half-century of quantitative data and unpublished oral histories and interviews\, The New Suburbia explores this vital transformation.

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final composition\, Requiem\, was finished after his death by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. According to his wife\, Constanze Mozart\, the ailing composer had come to believe he was writing the piece\, initially commissioned by a German count\, to be played at his own funeral — and indeed some sections were. Requiem was later performed at the funerals and commemorative services of Ludwig van Beethoven\, Joseph Haydn\, and Frédéric Chopin. Centuries later in 1960\, “scraps of paper” containing Mozart’s unrealized ideas were discovered\, prompting new versions of the Requiem. Join us for Robert Levin’s scholarly completion of this celebrated and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece\, featuring Downtown Voices with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

SUMMARY:Poetry of Enslavement and the African Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum for an enlightening afternoon with esteemed poet David Mills. Together\, we will explore the profound themes of his award-winning book of poems\, Boneyarn\, which is the first book of poetry about the history of slavery in New York City. During the program\, Mills will read a selection of his poems and shed light on the African Burial Ground—the oldest and largest slave cemetery in the United States––which is located just blocks away from the Museum. Operating from 1712 to 1795\, this burial ground is the resting place of 15\,000 enslaved and free Blacks\, along with some Native Americans and impoverished white people. Mills’ groundbreaking work captures the stories of those who worked as cooks\, childhood chimney sweeps\, laborers on the docks near South Street Seaport\, participants in the Revolutionary War\, and individuals who maintained African traditions in burial practices. Don’t miss this unique event where Mills will creatively “excavate” the tragedies and triumphs of New York’s enslaved and free Black community. Advanced registration is suggested for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. A reception with complimentary beverages will follow. Boneyarn will be available for purchase at the event.
