SUMMARY:All Hands on Deck Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Documentary film “All Hands on Deck: A Modern-Day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the World.” At this event\, you’ll become part of the captivating journey of a diverse crew of 30 passionate individuals\, including our narrator Will Sofrin. “All Hands on Deck” will show how the fearless team set sail on a daring voyage to transport a replica of the 18th century warship Rose from its home in Newport\, Rhode Island\, to the bustling heart of Hollywood for use in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. We will see how the crew effectively went back in time to bring to life the old ways of the maritime world\, and their hard work on the high seas. You will be on the edge of your seat as we watch the crew confront unpredictable storm-tossed seas and even an actual dismasting––which we will see while on Wavertree\, who experienced a dismasting that ended her sailing career. The film runs for 32 minutes\, offering an intense and captivating narrative. This program takes place on the ‘tweendeck below the main deck of Wavertree\, which is not a temperature-controlled environment. It can be chilly this time of year\, make sure to bring a coat and dress accordingly.

SUMMARY:Female Gaze: Peng Wei’s Feminine Space
DESCRIPTION:Immersive exploration into the captivating world of Peng Wei\, an artist renowned for her unique approach to representing the diversity of female perspectives. This lecture is a key part of the lecture series for the China Institute’s contemporary art exhibition\, showcasing the multifaceted nature of Chinese contemporary art and its dialogues with history and identity. This lecture will delve into the multiple dimensions of Peng Wei’s art. Whether expansive or intimate\, three-dimensional or flat\, her work consistently centers around women. Rather than simply portraying real or fictional female figures\, Peng Wei engages in a dynamic process of responding to and reshaping these representations. This nuanced interplay between response and remodeling in Peng Wei’s art blurs the lines\, demanding a closer look and deeper understanding. Join us in this artistic exploration\, where each piece is a dialogue\, a story\, and a celebration of women’s diverse experiences throughout history.

Morgan and Enzo are two booksellers at McNally Jackson Seaport who delight in the decadent\, the debased\, and the degenerate. Now\, they open their private reading circle to the last libertines in New York. This won’t be a cozy time by the fireplace. We don’t talk to Reese Witherspoon. We don’t know Oprah. SUMMARY:The March
DESCRIPTION:What happens when we dance together? And what happens when we don’t? An evening of contemporary dance in three parts\, presented in-the-round. Created by an intergenerational trio of acclaimed choreographers\, Tendayi Kuumba (recently seen in David Byrne’s American Utopia and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf)\, Big Dance Theater co-founder Annie-B Parson (David Byrne’s American Utopia)\, and Guggenheim Fellow Donna Uchizono (State of Heads) who have joined forces to interrogate our very human compulsion to move together in time. How does it change us\, shape us\, deepen us\, and lift us? How has it been used\, weaponized\, sexualized\, and politicized? What is the power of moving in precise unison? What happens when we dance together? And what happens when we don’t?
