SUMMARY:A Poetry Reading in Response to Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:Opportunity to gather in the power and beauty of poetry and the vitality of Jewish life. SUMMARY:The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles after 1945
DESCRIPTION:The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white\, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation – rich\, poor\, Black American\, Latino\, Asian\, immigrant\, the unhoused\, the lavishly housed\, and everyone in between. Nowhere\, writes historian Becky Nicolaides\, are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles\, where stories of everyday suburban life have taken on new inflections. Join us for a webinar on February 20 at 6pm ET as Nicolaides discusses her new book\, The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles after 1945. Based on a half-century of quantitative data and unpublished oral histories and interviews\, The New Suburbia explores this vital transformation.

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final composition\, Requiem\, was finished after his death by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. According to his wife\, Constanze Mozart\, the ailing composer had come to believe he was writing the piece\, initially commissioned by a German count\, to be played at his own funeral — and indeed some sections were. Requiem was later performed at the funerals and commemorative services of Ludwig van Beethoven\, Joseph Haydn\, and Frédéric Chopin. Centuries later in 1960\, “scraps of paper” containing Mozart’s unrealized ideas were discovered\, prompting new versions of the Requiem. Join us for Robert Levin’s scholarly completion of this celebrated and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece\, featuring Downtown Voices with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

SUMMARY:Poetry of Enslavement and the African Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum for an enlightening afternoon with esteemed poet David Mills. Together\, we will explore the profound themes of his award-winning book of poems\, Boneyarn\, which is the first book of poetry about the history of slavery in New York City. During the program\, Mills will read a selection of his poems and shed light on the African Burial Ground—the oldest and largest slave cemetery in the United States––which is located just blocks away from the Museum. Operating from 1712 to 1795\, this burial ground is the resting place of 15\,000 enslaved and free Blacks\, along with some Native Americans and impoverished white people. Mills’ groundbreaking work captures the stories of those who worked as cooks\, childhood chimney sweeps\, laborers on the docks near South Street Seaport\, participants in the Revolutionary War\, and individuals who maintained African traditions in burial practices. Don’t miss this unique event where Mills will creatively “excavate” the tragedies and triumphs of New York’s enslaved and free Black community. Advanced registration is suggested for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. A reception with complimentary beverages will follow. Boneyarn will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre Presents Habit Formed
DESCRIPTION:Habit Formed explores how habits are created and broken in our lives. These habits can manifest strength\, ease\, and freedom and also create limits\, boundaries\, and affliction. Mounting physical structures\, motif\, and pattern will embody the ways in which we\, as humans\, are habit forming creatures. The structures will be unpacked over the course of the evening through a playful\, athletic\, and sensuous movement vocabulary. The ultimate journey of the work will tell a story of discernment\, unpacking how we can be empowered by our habits and not impaired by them.

SUMMARY:Building Bridges Against Hate: How German and American Activists Fight Against Extremism
DESCRIPTION:American civil rights leader Evan Milligan and German activist Raimund Grafe both work in places where the far right has social and political strength – Alabama and the German state of Saxony\, respectively. They both believe passionately in the importance of history and remembrance in countering false narratives and extreme patriotism that are the seeds of bigotry and hate. Milligan and Grafe met through the International Bridge Building initiative created by Widen the Circle\, an organization that focuses on helping community-based remembrance and anti-prejudice activities. Milligan and Grafe will be joined in conversation by Widen the Circle founder Joel Obermayer about their important collaboration and the insights and inspiration that German and American activists have gained from each other in the fight to counter extremism and promote democracy. The conversation will be moderated by Amy Spitalnick\, CEO of the Jewish Council of Public Affairs and a fellow of Widen the Circle’s bridge-building program.

SUMMARY:Designing the Forest and other Mass Timber Futures
DESCRIPTION:Architect Lindsey Wikstrom’s book Designing the Forest and other Mass Timber Futures traces wood’s passage from stewarded seed in the soil of forests\, to harvested biomass\, to laminated mass timber buildings. Pausing at each step in the supply chain\, Wikstrom considers the labor and economies involved and looks closely at the way wood is grown\, sourced\, and transported\, and its impacts on the biodiversity of the forest and health of our ecosystems. Beautifully illustrated by Wikstrom’s drawings\, the book argues that a more sensitive species-based approach is essential\, with designers as choreographers of carbon\, transferring and trading between forest\, factory\, site\, and beyond.
