DESCRIPTION:The third session of the Construction History series focuses on Facades. Steel frames freed exterior walls from structural duties\, allowing architects new freedom to develop facades that could respond to changing functional and aesthetic criteria. Developers’ desire for efficiency and natural daylight led to thinner\, lighter walls – “veneers” in the dismissive language of early critics and “curtain walls” in the parlance of more enthusiastic designers. Electric lighting\, building materials\, and environmental controls all played roles in changing skyscraper skins in both New York and Chicago. However\, each city’s proximity to varying sources of stone\, glass\, and terra cotta – coupled with differing approaches to fire codes and the politics of local labor unions – created subtly different approaches to skyscraper facades.

SUMMARY:FIRE: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The fourth session of the Construction History series will examine the various dimensions in which the threat of fire affected skyscraper development. Claims of “fireproof building” were regularly disproved\, often in cataclysmic fashion. Iron promised improvements over timber\, but Chicago’s Great Fire in 1871 revealed its vulnerability to collapse. Brick remained the only truly fireproof material\, but owners and designers remained frustrated by its weight and inefficiency. The advent of lightweight terra cotta allowed architects to combine ceramic’s resistance to fire with iron’s efficient strength\, leading to hybrid structures that allowed the safe exploitation of the skeletal frame. Fire also reshaped building codes\, but new regulations reflected the competing desires of owners\, tenants\, architects\, and skilled tradespersons that\, in turn\, influenced skyscraper massing and composition. Differing approaches in New York and Chicago forged subtly different solutions.

DESCRIPTION:Germany entered World War I on August 1\, 1914 when the country declared war on Russia. 11 million German soldiers were mobilized\, 100\,000 of whom were Jewish. A number of these Jewish soldiers were honored for their service with the Iron Cross. In addition\, many German Jews supported the war effort at home along with their neighbors. This service and dedication were soon disregarded\, but World War I efforts are an essential part of the German Jewish story. Showcasing artifacts from the Museum’s collection\, we will explore these efforts and experiences with scholars Dr. Michael Geheran\, Dr. Jason Crouthamel\, Dr. Julia B. Köhne\, and Dr. Tim Grady\, moderator Ralph Blumenthal\, and the Museum’s Curatorial Research Assistant Rebecca Frank.

DESCRIPTION:Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢)\, one of China’s four great classic novels\, tells the story of the rise and decline a wealthy imperial Chinese family\, and by extension\, the rise and decline of the Qing dynasty itself. The novel was adapted as an English-language Opera composed by Bright Sheng with libretto by Sheng and David Henry Hwang\, which premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 2016. On April 21\, join composer Bright Sheng and Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang to explore the world of their Dream of the Red Chamber which returns to the San Francisco Opera House this June. Sheng and Hwang\, in conversation with Ann Chih Lin\, Director of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan\, will share what it takes to adapt this rich and complex world to a different medium\, and why this story still resonates with readers and viewers alike more than two centuries after it was first written.

DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Thomas Balcerski will discuss New York City as the capital of the nation\, beginning in 1785 under the Articles of Confederation Congress. Despite debates over whether the capital should be relocated\, the first Congress determined to meet there in March 1789\, and the first inauguration of an American President happened there in April of the same year. Balcerski reviews the many sites associated with the early capital\, between 1785 and 1790\, and considers their significance to later developments in the new government\, as well as how the legacy of this important history has been largely forgotten today.

DESCRIPTION:On October 1\, 1937\, Wolfgang Jung purchased 178 acres of land in Southbury\, Connecticut for the German-American Bund to build a Nazi camp. The residents of Southbury fought back against this Nazi invasion of their town. Organized by the Reverend M.E.N. Lindsay\, the Reverend Felix Manley\, and town leaders\, the townspeople established a zoning commission whose first ordinance forbade land usage in the town for “military training or drilling with or without arms except by the legally constituted armed forces of the United States of America.” The ruling effectively closed Southbury to the Bund. The Museum and the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut join together to explore this remarkable story. Join us for a discussion between Rebecca Erbelding\, historian\, archivist\, and curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; Ed Edelson\, former First Selectman of Southbury and the author of Lois’s Story: A Young Girl’s Inspiration Helps to Stop Hate and Fear; Arnie Bernstein\, author of Swastika Nation: Fritz Kuhn & the Rise and Fall of the German-American Bund; and Melinda K. SUMMARY:THE MILLS BUILDING: Skyscraper Construction in New York City in the Early 1880s
DESCRIPTION:In a coda to the four-part Construction History series led by Thomas Leslie and Donald Friedman\, the Museum adds a special lecture by ALEXANDER WOOD that will focus on George. B. Post’s Mills Building\, completed in 1882. One of the earliest and largest office blocks in the Wall Street financial district\, the 10-story Mills Building\, at the corner of Broad Street and Exchange Place\, offers a perfect case study of the issues raised in the series. The lecture draws on Wood’s research for his recent dissertation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning and Preservation\, “Building the Metropolis: Architecture\, Building\, and Labor in New York City\, 1880-1935.” The construction of tall buildings in New York in the late 19th century transformed the business of building. Wood will explore how architects\, general contractors\, and subcontractors organized construction to meet the needs of speculative real estate development and worked together to build more efficiently within a congested urban environment. Using new construction methods\, techniques\, and equipment\, a new generation of professionals\, manufacturers\, and contractors became major players in the city’s building industry for decades to come.

This is the first of six journeys taken by Shattuck\, each one inspired by a walk once taken by Henry David Thoreau. After the Cape\, Shattuck goes up Mount Katahdin and Mount Wachusett\, down the coastline of his hometown\, and then through the Allagash. Along the way\, Shattuck encounters unexpected characters\, landscapes\, and stories\, seeing for himself the restorative effects that walking can have on a dampened spirit. Over years of following Thoreau\, Shattuck finds himself uncovering new insights about family\, love\, friendship\, and fatherhood\, and understanding more deeply the lessons walking can offer through life’s changing seasons.

DESCRIPTION:Chinese literature can offer readers an extraordinary window into China\, but for newcomers to this rich and complex world\, where does one begin? On Wednesday\, April 27\, China Institute joins Paper Republic to celebrate the publication of their Guide to Contemporary Chinese Literature\, a distillation of the knowledge and experience of the Paper Republic team\, and of translators and academics in the broader community\, into an authoritative 300-page bird’s-eye view of Chinese fiction since the middle of last century. This roundtable event brings together three contributors to the Guide: Paper Republic co-founder\, Eric Abrahamsen\, and two essay authors\, Ping Zhu and Dylan Levi King\, who are also authors\, translators\, and specialists in their own right. They will be discussing the length\, breadth\, and depth of contemporary Chinese literature\, describing the importance of the Guide in its first edition and how that will expand in the future\, and sharing sneak peeks into their essays and the Guide’s contents.
