SUMMARY:Building the Empire State
DESCRIPTION:Livestreamed. Constructed in eleven months\, the 1250-foot Empire State Building\, the world’s tallest skyscraper from 1931 to 1971\, was a marvel of modern engineering. The frame rose more than a story a day; no comparable building since has matched that rate of ascent. The construction was orchestrated by general contractors Starrett Brothers & Eken\, premier “skyline builders” of the 1920s. From their records\, the company compiled an in-house notebook. Twenty-five years ago\, in 1998\, the hardcover edition of Building the Empire State was the first publication from the archives of the newly-founded Skyscraper Museum. The book is still in print with WW Norton\, now in paperback. Join the authors of the historical essays that frame the original manuscript notebook of the buildings Starrett Brothers & Eken\, Carol Willis and Don Friedman\, for a look back at the book and the building. This performance commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and is a first-ever orchestrated concert version of the musical.

DESCRIPTION:In the 1920s\, Berlin was home to a thriving transgender community\, with trans-focused magazines\, famous drag clubs\, and Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science\, where some trans people went for gender-affirming care. Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 changed everything. In this talk\, Laurie Marhoefer (he/they) explores what happened trans people under the Nazi state\, beginning with pre-war Berlin and then under the repressive Nazi regime. Marhoefer will look specifically at violence against trans women that was recorded in police files from the era.

DESCRIPTION:Kick off LGBTQ+ Pride Month with The Ranzo Boys and the Seaport Museum! In this musical program\, Lafayette Matthews and Jules Peiperl will explore queer narratives in maritime music. Through a mix of traditional and contemporary chanteys and ballads the speakers will sing engaging songs and share stories that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and its underrepresented connections to New York City’s waterfront.
