SUMMARY:Genocide In China: “In Search Of My Sister” Screening And Discussion
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the Chinese Communist Party has sought to forcibly assimilate the Uyghur Muslim community in Xinjiang (East Turkistan)\, an autonomous territory in northwest China. The CCP’s violent campaign has involved forced sterilization\, sexual violence\, enslavement\, torture\, and the establishment of vast concentration camps that call to mind Nazi camps a generation earlier. Join the Museum for a program exploring the modern-day genocide occurring in northwest China shortly before China is set to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The program will feature an exclusive\, private screening of In Search of My Sister (2021\, 80 minutes\, English)\, a new film that tells the story of American Uyghur activist Rushan Abbas. Due to Rushan’s public criticism of the CCP\, her sister\, Dr. Gulshan Abbas\, was detained in Chinese camps along with two to three million other Uyghurs. The film chronicles Rushan’s journey as she searches for proof that her sister is alive. Following the film\, the program will feature a panel discussion with Rushan Abbas; Jawad Mir\, the film’s director; and Ruth Messinger\, Global Ambassador and former President of American Jewish World Service.

SUMMARY:Constructing Merdeka 118: World’s Second-Tallest Building
DESCRIPTION:The Skyscraper Museum returns to its WORLD VIEW lecture series with a coda on the construction of the Merdeka 118 Tower in Kuala Lumpur. In December 2021\, Merdeka 118 lifted its symbolic spire into place and topped out at its full height of 2\,227 ft. or 679 meters to surpass the 632-meter Shanghai Tower and become the second-tallest building in the world. Ahmad Abdelrazaq\, who led the Samsung C & T team as the tower’s contractor\, will present an overview of the structural engineering\, planning\, and construction innovations of the supertall and the key challenges in its design and construction. He will describe the structural system optimization; the construction planning and sequencing; the application and delivery of high-performance concrete; and the application of real-time structural health monitoring\, among other issues

SUMMARY:Nazis On Long Island: The Story Of Camp Siegfried
DESCRIPTION:In 1936\, the German-American Bund\, a pro-Nazi group\, was formed in the United States to advocate for policies beneficial to Germany. The Bund was very active throughout the latter half of the 1930s\, organizing rallies and marches\, including a rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939. One of the Bund’s most notable activities was running summer camps across the nation that were similar to Hitler Youth Camps. Camp Siegfried was located in Yaphank\, New York and attracted numerous visitors. The camp even had its own train on the Long Island Railroad\, the “Siegfried Special.” Join the Museum for a program exploring Camp Siegfried and Nazis in the United States. The program will feature a panel discussion between Bess Wohl\, playwright of Camp Siegfried; Bradley W. Hart\, author of Hitler’s American Friends: The Third Reich’s Supporters in the United States; and Arnie Bernstein\, author of Swastika Nation: Fritz Kuhn & the Rise and Fall of the German-American Bund. The conversation will be moderated by Randi F. Marshall\, Editorial Writer at Newsday.

SUMMARY:Translating China: Stories of the Pathbreakers
DESCRIPTION:China boasts of a 5000-year civilization\, but for much of the past few millenniums\, the country had been shrouded in mystery due in large part to its lack of communication with the rest of the world. The scarcity of translations of Chinese books\, classic or otherwise\, was a contributing factor to the impasse as well. Mysteries and misunderstandings about China and its culture with its values\, customs and institutions began to be unveiled and corrected in modern times thanks to the masterful translation of Chinese novels and other classics by a group of Westerners who were steeped in the Chinese language and culture. In a recent book on noteworthy Western translators of Chinese literature\, the author Prof. Zhu Zhenwu of Shanghai Normal University\, a renowned translator himself\, provided insights into 20 or so master translators in modern times from the U.S.\, the UK\, Australia and Canada who translated over 300 Chinese literary works\, both classic and modern and brought a side of China rarely known to the English-speaking World.

SUMMARY:Architecture Unbound: A Century of the Disruptive Avant-Garde
DESCRIPTION:In Architecture Unbound noted architecture critic JOSEPH GIOVANNINI traces our current architecture landscape to the disruptive scientific advances and transgressive and progressive art movements that roiled Europe before and after World War I\, and then to the social unrest and cultural disruptions of the 1960s. Cumulative shifts across disciplines and social systems established fertile new ground for the rise of an inventive\, antiauthoritarian architecture that\, in the 1970s\, challenged the status quo. Built manifestoes in the 1980s led to digital inventions of the 1990s\, and after the turn of the millennium to climax structures that now populate world capitals competing for cultural stature on the international stage.

SUMMARY:Echoes In Ink: A Liberation Day Reading Of Short Stories From The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Holocaust\, many Jewish writers turned to pen and paper to reckon with the enormity of their loss. The stories they wrote—both fiction and nonfiction—bring to life the darkest moments of human history at the same time as they remind us of the human capacity for renewal and regeneration. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join the Museum for a reading of three such short stories: “The Road of No Return” by Rachel Häring Korn read by Jackie Hoffman\, “The Shawl” by Cynthia Ozick read by Mili Avital\, and “A Wedding in Brownsville” by Isaac Bashevis Singer. The program will premiere at 10 AM Eastern Time and be available all day.

SUMMARY:Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors
DESCRIPTION:We are in a time of enormous risk. Economic growth is anemic\, and political risk to the capital markets is on the rise. In the United States\, a generation of white-collar baby boomers is heading into retirement with insufficient assets in their 401(k) programs\, and industrial workers are stuck with materially underfunded pension plans. Against that backdrop\, the investing industry’s current set of practices and assumptions―modern portfolio theory (MPT)―is based on a half-century-old formula that is supposed to deliver the maximum amount of return for a given amount of risk. The trouble is that it doesn’t work very well. In Getting Back to Business: Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors and How You Can Bring Common Sense to Your Portfolio\, dividend-investing guru Daniel Peris proposes a radical new approach―radical in that it does away with MPT in favor of a more intuitive\, common-sense approach practiced by business people in their own affairs every day: cash returns on cash investments. Peris will also discuss being a historian in a profession with a notably low historical sensibility.

SUMMARY:Drawing It Out: Graphic Novels\, Teenagers\, And The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Graphic novels have long been emerging as a way to tell difficult and often traumatic stories. Since the late 1970s\, they have also been a medium for telling stories about the Holocaust. From true stories to fictional ones\, graphic novels are used to tell all kinds of stories about this time. Recently\, authors and illustrators have been turning to stories about teenagers during the Holocaust. Join the Museum for a program exploring the depiction of teenagers in Holocaust graphic novels. The program will consist of a conversation between David Polonsky\, illustrator of Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation; Ken Krimstein\, author of When I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teens\, and R.J. Palacio\, author of White Bird: A Wonder Story. The conversation will be moderated by AJ Frost\, Newsletter Editor and Staff Writer for the Comics Beat.

SUMMARY:Legacies: Abe Foxman
DESCRIPTION:Abraham H. Foxman is one of the nation’s preeminent voices against antisemitism and hate. Join the Museum for a conversation with Foxman about his personal background\, his life’s work\, and his outlook on antisemitism today\, moderated by Newsweek Deputy Opinion Editor Batya Ungar-Sargon. Born in Poland in 1940\, Foxman survived the Holocaust when his parents entrusted him to their Catholic nursemaid\, who baptized him and raised him as her own son. He went on to become a pioneering National Director of ADL from 1987 to 2015\, elevating the organization’s national profile and forging connections far beyond the Jewish community. Foxman’s relationships with presidents\, popes\, and prime ministers brought antisemitism into the public eye. He also authored four books\, served on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council\, and served as Vice Chair of the Museum’s Board of Trustees.
