SUMMARY:Justice\, Truth\, And Memory In Jewish Argentina
DESCRIPTION:After World War II\, Argentina became home to one of the world’s largest communities of Holocaust survivors at the same time as the country provided refuge to many former Nazis. Today\, this complex legacy of the Holocaust interacts with other legacies of violence in Argentina\, including the 1976 to 1983 dictatorship and the 1994 AMIA bombing. Explore issues of justice\, truth\, and memory in Argentina in this virtual program\, which will be co-presented with the Museo del Holocausto de Buenos Aires.

SUMMARY:The Invention of Public Space: Designing for Inclusion in Lindsay’s New York
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In The Invention of Public Space: Designing for Inclusion in Lindsay’s New York\, Mariana Mogilevich details a watershed moment when designers\, government administrators\, and residents sought to remake New York City in the image of a diverse\, free\, and democratic society. Bringing together psychology\, politics\, and design\, her new book considers a broad array of projects in open spaces to affirm the value of city life in a moment of “urban crisis\,” and reveals the emergence of a concept of public space that remains today a powerful\, if unrealized\, aspiration. In Singapore\, his design for 18 Robinson integrates green space vertically throughout the structure.

SUMMARY:Pieces of China: Derek Sandhaus on Baijiu (白酒)\, China’s Fiery Alcohol
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, Chinese emperors\, literati scholars\, and great men of letters have waxed poetic about the pleasures of getting drunk. The distilled spirit known as “Baijiu\,” 白酒，was developed by the Ming dynasty\, but it was during the Communist era that this “working man’s drink” was elevated to the national sensation that we see in China today. Any businessperson will tell you that nary a deal can be sealed without a flurry of baijiu shots and bleary-eyed\, drunken toasts. Derek Sandhaus\, author of Drunk in China and founder of a Baijiu company\, will share the secrets of the world’s most fiery liquor. As China becomes more international\, how has its drinking culture changed? Will the West learn to drink baijiu and clink glasses with China?

SUMMARY:A New Perspective On The Rescue Of Denmark’s Jews
DESCRIPTION:More than 7\,000 Danish Jews were evacuated to Sweden in October 1943. After crossing the Øresund by boat and landing on Swedish shores\, approximately 6\,000 of the refugees were interviewed by the Swedish Police Authority\, to whom they disclosed a wealth of information about their lives in Denmark and the logistics of their escape. The Police Authority’s records have only recently been uncovered and explored by Danish scholars. Join Therkel Straede\, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense\, for a discussion of the police records and what they reveal about this extraordinary feat of rescue.

SUMMARY:Occupied America: British Military Rule and the Experience of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Donald Johnson will discuss his book Occupied America: British Military Rule and the Experience of Revolution. In the midst of British military occupation\, men and women from a variety of backgrounds navigated harsh conditions\, mitigated threats to their families and livelihoods\, took advantage of new opportunities\, and balanced precariously between revolutionary and royal attempts to secure their allegiance. In so doing\, Johnson argues that these people and their experiences shaped the course of the Revolution\, gradually discrediting Britain’s ability to govern the former colonies and rotting their attempts to restore order from the inside out. This lecture will take place via Zoom. Registration ends at 3:30pm on the day of the lecture.

SUMMARY:Risky Decisions: How Mathematical Paradoxes and Other Conundrums Have Shaped Economic Science
DESCRIPTION:Online discussion. At its core\, economics is about making decisions. In the history of economic thought\, great intellectual prowess has been exerted toward devising exquisite theories of optimal decision making in situations of constraint\, risk and scarcity. Yet not all of our choices are purely logical\, and so there is a long-standing tension between those emphasizing the rational and irrational sides of human behavior. One strand develops formal models of rational utility maximizing\, while the other draws on what behavioral science has shown about our tendency to act irrationally. In this talk\, George Szpiro will give examples of mathematical paradoxes and psychological conundrums that have led to advancements in economic science. He will challenge the audience with questions about how to make decisions\, and thereby show how people who believe themselves to be rational can be led astray. Advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the Zoom link prior to the program.

SUMMARY:Senate Power vs. the Majority
DESCRIPTION:This is a program of Debate Defends Democracy\, a virtual discussion of Constitutional issues and the Bill of Rights presented at Federal Hall. With increasing frequency over the past two decades\, the political preferences of a majority of Americans have been subverted in the legislative process by the will of a shrinking minority. This inequity is particularly stark in the institution of the U.S. Senate\, which first convened under the new Constitution at Federal Hall on March 4\, 1789. To balance power in the central government\, the “Grand Compromise” at the Constitutional Convention\, had agreed that both the most populous and least populous states would each have two Senators. One of the contemporary impacts is that the Senate is increasingly stymied in passing major legislation even when supported by a majority of Americans. This program will explore the framer’s intent for the Senate\, the historical and political circumstances that have contributed to this imbalance\, the effects of this distortion of representation on the health of our democracy as well as areas for potential reform\, from expanded statehood to an overhaul of institutional rules. Federal Hall’s Sam Roberts will introduce the topic with an historical perspective.

SUMMARY:Burj Khalifa: What We Learned
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. Bill Baker is now a structural engineering consulting partner at SOM\, where he led the firm’s practice for over twenty years. Since joining SOM in 1981\, he has dedicated himself to extending the profession of structural engineering through design\, research\, teaching\, and professional activities. Baker is best known for the development of the “buttressed core” structural system for the Burj Khalifa in Dubai\, the world’s tallest manmade structure. Completed in 2010\, the 828-meter Burj surpassed the then-tallest Taipei 101 by more than 300 meters. This unprecedented vertical leap was accomplished by iterative responses to wind-tunnel testing and other creative solutions to constructability. In his talk\, Bill will discuss both the precedents that allowed their team to invent a new structural approach\, as well as the legacy of “Lessons Learned” a decade after the completion of the skyscraper that still remains the tallest in the world.

SUMMARY:STEM Supremes: In Conversation with Elizabeth Blackburn
DESCRIPTION:Conversation with the queen of telomeres: Australian-American scientist Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn. Light years on from her early work sequencing the DNA of pond scum\, Blackburn unraveled our understanding of the function of telomeres—the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes—and the role they play in aging and diseases such as cancer. She took on US President George W. Bush on the political flashpoint of federal funding for stem cell research\, has pioneered a path for women scientists\, and received the pinnacle of scientific achievement—the Nobel Prize—for unlocking secrets about how we age at a fundamental level. Her 2017 New York Times Bestseller\, “The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger\, Healthier\, Longer”\, revealed how sleep quality\, exercise\, diet\, chronic stress\, and even the neighborhood you live in can impact the length of our telomeres and\, in turn\, our genetic heritage.

SUMMARY:Isabel Wilkerson And Rabbi Angela Buchdahl On “Caste”
DESCRIPTION:While working on her Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Warmth of Other Suns\, about the Great Migration of African Americans out of the Jim Crow South\, Isabel Wilkerson realized that the United States had an unspoken and deeply ingrained caste system. In her new book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents\, a #1 New York Times bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club pick\, Wilkerson explores the impact of this American caste system—a rigid hierarchy of human divisions—and its connections to caste systems in India and Nazi Germany. She documents how the Nazis studied American race laws as they planned the German Nuremberg Laws\, and she points forward to ways that we can move beyond artificial and destructive separations towards a common humanity. Join Wilkerson and Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl\, Senior Rabbi at New York’s Central Synagogue and the first Asian-American person to be ordained as cantor or rabbi in North America\, for a conversation about Caste\, the legacy of the Holocaust\, and what lies under the surface of American life today.
