BARE Dance Company’s completely live production brings new meaning to immersive performance\, creatively using multiple feeds — and even a drone camera– in the theater at Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Cinematic in scope\, with free-moving cameras wielded by the performers\, Surveillance2.0 is inspired by the increased scrutiny of personal spaces during quarantine prompted by platforms like Zoom. With performances at 6pm and 7pm\, each presentation will be unique due to real-time mixing of visual and audio feeds — handled by director Mike Esperanza– and streamed to YouTube Live. The 7pm live-stream will be followed by a brief Q&A with the artists.

DESCRIPTION:Coming in late in the vein of the Western civilization\, American culture is young and vibrant. So are the museums. The most characteristic museums in the United States are not to be found in mega cities like New York or Los Angeles. They rest at the foot of mountains\, amidst the Southern suburbs\, and sometimes in the forgotten corner of a fine college campus. What is important about these hidden gems is that they represent the real America as they are often created and operated by the people who feel dearest to the themes of their museums. Great diversity can be seen in the creation of the seven museums selected for this lecture – The Cloisters\, High Line\, Field Museum of Natural History\, National Firearm Museum\, The Ark Encounter\, Harvard Museum of Natural History\, and Delta Airline Museum. Not only do they vary in topical themes\, but they were owned and run by businessmen\, activists\, scholars\, firms\, and average citizens like us. How do they reflect the social dynamics of American society? What culture outsiders can learn from the making of these museums? These are the questions that Dr. Shen Xincheng will address in this lecture.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Elizabeth Bellak
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Bellak (née Ari­ana Spiegel) was born in 1930 in Staw­ki\, Poland. Known as “the Shirley Temple of Poland\,” she was a prominent child actress before World War II who went to live in Warsaw to pursue a career in film. When war broke out\, Ariana and her older sister Renia were visiting their grandparents in the town of Przemyśl. Renia was killed in Przemyśl in 1942\, but Ariana survived and made her way back to Warsaw along with a friend’s father. There\, Ariana was baptized with a new name—Elzbieta—and sent to play a real-life acting role as a Catholic girl at a convent school. After the war\, Elzbieta made her way to New York via Austria\, became “Elizabeth\,” and started a career as a schoolteacher. Years later\, she was miraculously reunited with her sister Renia’s wartime diary\, in which Renia had documented their family’s experiences and shared intimate personal reflections. St. Martin’s Press published it in 2019 as Renia’s Diary and the diary became an international bestseller. Join Elizabeth Bellak for this Stories Survive program exploring her remarkable journey. Bellak will be interviewed by Stephanie Lynne Mason\, a Broadway actress known for leading roles in Fiddler on the Roof and Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish.

While each community’s experience is different\, massive collective trauma often results in cumulative emotional and psychological wounds that are carried across generations and remain potent in 2021. Dr. Irit Felsen is a clinical psychologist trained at Yale University and in Germany and Israel. She has seen these types of cumulative wounds firsthand\, as a researcher focused on the long-term effects of intergenerational trauma and a clinician with extensive experience working with Holocaust survivors and their families. She was faced with an impossible decision: should she help the man who brutalized so many lives\, but saved hers\, along with some of the people closest to her? Follow her journey in Love It Was Not\, a new film from Israeli director Maya Sarfaty and Austrian-Israeli producing team Nir Sa’ar and Kurt Langbein (distributed by Greenwich Entertainment). The film premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2020 and won best feature film at Docaviv. This exclusive program will feature a panel discussion with Sarfaty and Langbein\, moderated by Columbia University film professor Annette Insdorf. Attendees will also receive a private link to screen the film during the week before the discussion.

SUMMARY:The Imperial Examination System in China and the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes referred to as “the 5th invention of China”\, the civil service examination system in imperial China was designed to select candidates for the state bureaucracy. This system was in place between 650 CE and 1905\, making it the world’s longest-lasting meritocracy. In the course of over 1200 years\, the examination system helped shape China’s intellectual\, cultural\, political\, and religious life\, giving rise to a unique gentry class of scholar-bureaucrats. The Chinese civil examination system was adopted by a number of neighboring Asian countries\, such as Vietnam\, Korea and Japan\, in one form or another. To help understand this important institution in traditional China\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on May 22 by Ms. Feng Jiahong\, President of the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing\, on the history\, process and significance of the imperial examinations. The Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing was built on the former site of the largest imperial examination center in China. The rare archives\, records\, actual examination papers as well as the breathtaking architecture of the museum will also be introduced in the lecture.

Dr. Lisa Leff reconstructed Szajkowski’s story in all its ambiguity in her 2015 book The Archive Thief: The Man Who Salvaged French Jewish History in the Wake of the Holocaust. Called “X Troop\,” the unit included a motley group of intellectuals\, artists\, and athletes from Germany and Austria. Many had lost their families and homes\, and would stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis. The top-secret unit is the subject of Dr. Leah Garrett’s new book X Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War II\, scheduled for release on May 25\, 2021. Drawing on extensive original research\, including interviews with the last surviving members\, Garrett follows this unique band of brothers from Germany to England and back again\, with stops at British internment camps\, the beaches of Normandy\, the battlefields of Italy and Holland\, and the hellscape of Terezin concentration camp—the scene of one of the most dramatic\, untold rescues of the war.
