SUMMARY:Waterfront Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Waterfront Alliance’s annual Waterfront Conference – now in its 15th year – is the region’s premier forum exploring the challenges of and solutions to climate change\, sustaining a strong maritime industry and regional economy\, equitable access at our waterfronts and to our shared waterways\, and a healthier open-space environment. Communities across the country are increasingly preparing for the new age of weather due to human-caused climate change. As actions are globally undertaken to limit the scale of climate change\, greater attention must be paid to redesigning communities\, enhancing their ability both to adapt to conditions that are becoming a “new normal” and to recover from climate impacts in a resilient manner. Infusions of federal and state funding for our region offer chances for major change unlike any other in recent time. We have a once in a generation opportunity to ensure we prepare for the climate future\, invest in vital infrastructure\, and support the needs of the most vulnerable.

SUMMARY:Music from Auschwitz: A Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance for Music From Auschwitz\, a series of two evening concerts. The concerts will feature ten short musical pieces arranged by Polish political prisoners who were members of the men’s orchestra in the Auschwitz I camp. Using popular German hits of the 1930s and 40s\, they arranged and orchestrated these tangos\, waltzes\, and foxtrots for a dance band that played Sunday concerts for the Auschwitz garrison near the camp commandant’s villa. The musical pieces were recently rediscovered in the archives of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland. Led by conductor Oriol Sans\, a University of Michigan student orchestra will perform the original musical pieces interspersed with lines\, spoken by the singers\, from testimonies and interviews with members of the Auschwitz I men’s orchestra after the war. Silent for more than seventy years\, the voices and stirring melodies of those imprisoned at Auschwitz will be brought to life in the Museum’s Edmond J. Safra Hall.

SUMMARY:Wellington Koo: The Top Diplomat in the Republican China
DESCRIPTION:A graduate from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in international law and diplomacy in 1912\, Wellington Koo (顾维钧) witnessed and participated in many historical international events in the Republican era of China. He was China’s plenipotentiary to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919\, where he made a decision that would steer the history of China and leave his mark on world history by refusing to sign the Treaty of Versailles; served as the Ambassador to France\, Great Britain and the United States; was a participant in the founding of the League of Nations and the United Nations; and sat as a judge on the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1957 to 1967. Between October 1926 and June 1927\, while serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs\, Koo briefly held the concurrent positions of acting Premier and interim President of the Republic of China. While his presidency was brief\, his extraordinary lifespan of 97 years makes him the longest-living person to ever have led China.

SUMMARY:J O B – A Simple Man
DESCRIPTION:In an intense and musical dramatization\, J O B – A Simple Man tells the story of an emigrant’s journey from the old world-a little village in Russia-to the new world in New York. Mendel Singer\, much like Job in the Hebrew Bible\, loses everything. He despairs and curses\, but ultimately experiences a miracle. Adapted by Karen-Maria Bille from Joseph Roth’s 1930 novel of the same name\, this powerful production stars award-winning Danish actor Ina-Miriam Rosenbaum in every role. Rosenbaum is directed by Rolf Heim and joined onstage by principal oboist of the Danish Royal Orchestra Henrik Goldshmidt and Indian-Danish accordion virtuoso Anders Singh Vesterdahl. As audiences follow Mendel Singer from joy to deep despair\, and through to hope and comfort\, the performance’s offbeat music lifts the story of one person into a universally relatable tale about the experience of being a refugee and the challenges of encountering a new world.

SUMMARY:The Architecture of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Architects can spend years designing their buildings\, but trees have been perfecting their own architecture in response to their environment for eons. On a walk through Wagner Park\, in Battery Park City\, we will draw the trees around us to understand their likeness to skyscrapers! The structures of trees and skyscrapers have a lot in common and we will learn about how trunks and branches support their leaves or needles and how roots create strong foundations. Recommended for 2nd-5th grade. This program meets at the Skyscraper Museum\, 39 Battery Pl. and is held principally outdoors. You must reserve a place for your child/family through the Eventbrite button. Every child should be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
