SUMMARY:Murmurations
DESCRIPTION:Murmurations is a collective puppetry performance in public space where humans of all ages are invited to shed their human bodies and become a murmuration of plastic bottle fish. Puppets\, sound and movement will transform Battery Park City into a seascape of androgenous oysters\, stunning sturgeon and captivating cetaceans. Inspired by the impact of climate change and plastic pollution in the ocean\, the puppets of this performance are crafted of plastic waste removed from New York City waterways and beaches. The practice that informs Murmurations is rooted in Bread and Puppet pageantry\, carnival\, circus parade\, and direct action where large performing objects activate public spaces with collective action. The performance is composed of two movements. The first movement will occur in the grass lawn of Teardrop Park. Here\, participants will learn the puppetry art of fish murmuration. The second movement will begin as the murmuration parades to Rockefeller Park. There\, giant puppets inspired by biodiversity of New York Harbor will join the murmuration\, creating a cacophonous confluence of city and sea\, a puppet poem that seeks a new relationship to our blue planet. Those who wish to participate in Murmurations are invited to gather at 2pm. Please note that participants will move together in a close group. All are welcome to enjoy the performance at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Shall Make\, Shall Be: The Bill of Rights at Play
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of a curatorial project which invited 10 independent artists and game designers to create playable artworks themed around the individual amendments in the Bill of Rights\, drawing on their effects\, interpretations\, and legal meanings in U.S. culture. On September 25\, 1789\, 12 Amendments to the still fledgling U.S. Constitution were enacted at Federal Hall by the first Congress. Sent to the States for ratification\, ten would be approved and become known as the Bill of Rights. Stewarded by Representative James Madison\, this codification of individual rights\, was an integral compromise for the unification of the United States. Alongside this history\, is the recognition and duty to communicate that this exhibit sits on Lenapehoking: a land stolen from the Indigenous Lenape peoples who continue to live in New York City and beyond. These works are intended to be understood as critical games\, using the mechanisms of play to interrogate\, critique\, and inform common understanding of civil liberties in the 21st Century.

SUMMARY:Lower Manhattan Historic Association's July 4 Parade
DESCRIPTION:The celebration of Independence Day has been a long standing tradition in Lower Manhattan from the very first days of the Revolution\, and especially following the British military’s evacuation in 1783. As the celebration of this most important of American patriotic holidays gravitated uptown to other neighborhoods this and other Lower Manhattan historical traditions gradually faded into relative obscurity and finally ceased to be active by the mid-1970s. Understanding only too well how Lower Manhattan holds a place second to none among the cities and States leading the revolutionary cause for independence and appreciating the wealth of historical monuments and American patriot gravesites concentrated in what is often called the “tip of Manhattan” several of the oldest and most respected historical and military organizations with deep ties to the neighborhood formed the Lower Manhattan Historical Association in 2014 for the purpose of reviving the patriotic traditions so closely associated with our beloved city\, offer the multiplicity of our communities as well as our many visitors the opportunity to participate and enhance the sentiments of coexisting plurality and unity that define the ideals of great nation. Accordingly\, on July 3 2015\, the Association and its friends organized and lead its first Lower Manhattan Independence Day Parade revival. \nThe success of this parade\, along with other patriotic events such the Evacuation Day commemoration and the Revolutionary War battles of Saratoga and Yorktown joint celebration\, has inspired the Association’s Constituent Organizations as well as the growing members of the Community to apply greater resources in the revival of these traditions in a spirit of friendship and inclusiveness that so well defines the very best of New York City and the United States of America.

SUMMARY:Jewish Immigration with Hasia Diner and Daniel Okrent
DESCRIPTION:Between 1820 and 1924\, there was a large influx of Jewish immigrants to the United States from Eastern and Central Europe. They were escaping oppressive laws that many parts of Europe passed that targeted Jews\, along with increased violence from pogroms and riots. These immigrants hoped that the United States would provide them with a fresh start and more freedom. However\, this was not always the case\, as many Jews continued to experience antisemitism in their new home. Join the Museum for a program exploring Jewish immigration in the United States\, presented by Hasia Diner\, the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University\, in conversation with Daniel Okrent\, author of The Guarded Gate: Bigotry\, Eugenics\, and the Law that Kept Two Generations of Jews\, Italians\, and Other European Immigrants Out of America. They will discuss the different waves of immigration during this period\, the specific reasons why Jews left Europe\, and why they chose the United States as their new home.

Masks are required for indoor programs. For those who prefer the Zoom option for this in-person program\, please email programs@skyscraper.org.

SUMMARY:Hester Street Fair Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:The best ice cream vendors from across the five boroughs bring us their finest flavors to compete for the chance to claim this year’s acclaimed ‘Audience Award’. The Social’s reputation is pretty darn good when you consider that thousands of people have shown up years past— including Leo DiCaprio and his mom— but don’t be intimidated\, as all it takes to vote is $10 which gives you one vote and a 2oz sample of each vendors’ signature flavor for the day. The votes will be tallied at 4:30pm and a winner announced at 5 pm. The fate of NYC’s ice cream obsession is in your hands!

SUMMARY:The Steve Turre Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a remarkable career spanning more than five decades\, virtuoso Steve Turre has proven he is one of the foremost masters of the trombone and a pioneer of using seashells as musical instruments. In addition to performing with the Saturday Night Live Band and the Mingus Big Band\, jazz icon Turre has performed with numerous preeminent artists including Ray Charles\, Art Blakey\, Dizzy Gillespie\, McCoy Tyner\, Herbie Hancock\, Tito Puente\, and more. This performance presents works from his album The Very Thought Of You\, on which Turre shows off a less celebrated side of his brilliant artistry: his moving\, heartfelt way with a ballad.
