SUMMARY:Sweet Sounds: The Extraordinary Life of Rulan Chao Pian
DESCRIPTION:A renowned professor\, scholar\, and ethnomusicologist\, Rulan Chao (later Rulan Chao Pian) was born in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, where at the time her father\, the eminent linguist and composer Yuen Ren Chao\, was a professor at Harvard. She spent most of her childhood in various cities in China as well as in Paris\, returning to the U.S. at age 16. Pian started teaching Chinese at Harvard in 1947\, providing language foundation for the early generation of American Sinologists. She received a Ph.D. from the university in 1960 with a dissertation on Song Dynasty Music\, and\, in 1974\, was named tenured Professor in East Asian Languages and in Music\, one of the first women to attain the professorial rank and the very first Chinese American woman professor at Harvard. To mark the centennial anniversary of the birth of Prof. Rulan Chao Pian\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on July 30 by Dr. Bell Yung\, Professor Emeritus of Music of the University of Pittsburgh and a former student of Prof. Rulan Chao Pian at Harvard. Dr. Yung will relate his mentor’s extraordinary life and work as well as their personal friendship.

SUMMARY:A Block in Time: A New York City History at the Corner of Fifth Avenue and Twenty-Third Street
DESCRIPTION:A Block in Time is the story of New York City\, told through the prism of a single block\, highlighting the lives of the people who lived and worked there. “Introducing readers to a remarkable cast of characters\,” explains fellow writer David S. Brown\, “CHRISTIANE BIRD traces the extraordinary story of a single New York City neighborhood from the Age of Discovery to our own era of hypergentrification. More than a microhistory\, A Block in Time is a splendid portrait of the personalities and architecture\, the fevered dreams and erratic energy that shaped a nation.” The biography of the block that is Bird’s focus is the gridded rectangle bounded by 23rd and 24th streets and by Sixth Avenue on the west and Fifth Avenue and Broadway on the east\, where they cross near Madison Square. From the story of Solomon Pieters\, a former slave who was the first owner of the block\, to Alexander “Clubber” Williams\, a notorious police office of the 1870s\, to Marietta Stevens\, whose Sunday-night socials and scheming became the stuff of legend\, Christiane Bird recounts how this block was home to “greed and generosity\, guilt and innocence\, extravaganza and degradation.” This one Manhattan block may have intensified the changing forces in the city\, but is also emblematic of New York as a whole.

SUMMARY:Liberty’s Chains: Slavery\, Abolition\, and the Jay Family of New York
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture. David Gellman explores the contradictions of the Jay family’s attitudes toward slavery over multiple generations. Enslaved and formerly enslaved people living in Jay households experienced isolation\, even as members of the Jay family took increasingly radical approaches to law\, policy\, politics\, and advocacy\, culminating in John Jay’s signing of An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery in 1799 as Governor of New York\, which helped bring about the emancipation of enslaved people in New York in 1827. Gellman aims to bring new light and a fresh understanding of the Founder’s legacy.

SUMMARY:36.5/A Durational Performance with the Sea Community Day
DESCRIPTION:A day of film screenings of Sarah Cameron Sunde’s durational performances along with community crafts and participatory walks centered around the video artworks\, drawing awareness to water\, time and rising sea levels. See website for craft and walk schedule. Two video works\, 36.5 / Te Manukanukatanga ō Hoturoa\, Aotearoa-New Zealand and 36.5 / Bay of All Saints\, Salvador\, Brazil\, will play simultaneously in a four-channel installation outside on the waterfront from 8:08 AM – 8:31 PM\, a duration that relates to the timing and length of the full tidal cycle in Aotearoa on May 16\, 2022\, the day that work was created. Each video work is part of the series\, 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea\, in which the artist created nine site-specific performances and video artworks that engage the public in conversations about deep time and sea-level rise. For the project\, Sarah Cameron Sunde stands in a tidal bay for the full tidal cycle (12-13 hours) as water engulfs her body and then reveals it again. She partners with local organizations and invites the public to participate by standing in the water with her and by marking each passing hour from the shore. These works have been created with hundreds of people in communities around the world: Maine\, Mexico\, San Francisco\, the Netherlands\, Bangladesh\, Brazil\, Kenya\, and Aotearoa-New Zealand.
