The genre has gone through many iterations over time\, from the early romances of Jane Austen to the rise of the bodice-ripper to today’s increasingly diverse array of protagonists and plotlines. A panel of romance authors\, editors and experts =will discuss the genre’s power as a tool for feminism\, diversity and challenging the status quo\, as well as its important value in providing a sense of comfort and community to its readers.

SUMMARY:The American Way: A True Story of Nazi Escape\, Superman\, and Marilyn Monroe
DESCRIPTION:Family lore had it that author Bonnie Siegler’s grandfather Jules crossed paths with Marilyn Monroe in Midtown Manhattan late one night in 1954\, her white dress flying up around her as she filmed a scene for The Seven Year Itch. Siegler wasn’t sure she quite believed her grandfather’s story…until\, cleaning out his apartment\, she found the film reel. That discovery would prompt her to investigate her grandfather’s seemingly-tall tales — and lead her in pursuit of a remarkable\, poignant piece of forgotten history\, bridging old Hollywood\, the birth of the comic book\, and the Holocaust. The American Way is a kaleidoscopic tale of hope and reinvention\, of daring escapes and fake identities\, of big dreams and the magic of movies\, and what it means to be a real-life Superman. Authors of The American Way\, Bonnie Siegler and Helene Stapinski\, will be joined in conversation by NY Times contributor Bob Morris.

SUMMARY:Sebastian Mallaby on "The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future"
DESCRIPTION:Innovations rarely come from “experts.” When it comes to improbable innovations\, a legendary tech VC told Sebastian Mallaby\, the future cannot be predicted\, it can only be discovered. It is the nature of the venture-capital game that most attempts at discovery fail\, but a very few succeed at such a scale that they more than make up for everything else. That extreme ratio of success and failure is the power law that drives the VC business\, all of Silicon Valley\, the wider tech sector and\, by extension\, the world. In The Power Law\, Sebastian Mallaby has parlayed unprecedented access to the most celebrated venture capitalists of all time—the key figures at Sequoia\, Kleiner Perkins\, Accel\, Benchmark and Andreessen Horowitz\, as well as Chinese partnerships such as Qiming and Capital Today—into a riveting blend of storytelling and analysis that unfurls the history of tech incubation\, in the Valley and ultimately worldwide. We learn the unvarnished truth\, often for the first time\, about some of the most iconic triumphs and infamous disasters in Valley history\, from the comedy of errors at the birth of Apple to the avalanche of venture money that fostered hubris at WeWork and Uber.

SUMMARY:Liss’s Long Road to Liberty in New York’s Founding Era
DESCRIPTION:Join historian and author Claire Bellerjeau as she introduces Elizabeth\, or Liss. Enslaved on Long Island\, Liss showed great agency when she risked everything to escape with a British commander during the Revolutionary War. Despite her bravery\, within weeks of her escape Liss was re-enslaved in British-held Manhattan\, where she interacted with Washington’s lead spy\, Robert Townsend\, aka “Culper\, Jr.” As the Culper Spy Ring began using secret codes and invisible ink to smuggle vital information to Washington\, Liss may also have engaged in intelligence gathering for the Patriot cause. At the end of the war\, Liss again chose her own path\, deciding not to leave with the British evacuation. Now expecting a child\, she remained in New York City in the home of Robert Townsend\, hoping for the chance of a better life. Townsend resold Liss and her son to a widow who promised they could stay in the city\, but her path took a terrifying turn when the widow remarried\, selling Liss south to Charleston without her young son. In Charleston she was enslaved for two years by a violent man who years earlier had been part of the rioting mob at the Boston Massacre. Eventually Robert discovered what had happened and worked to smuggle Liss back to New York where she could reunite her with her son and continue to work towards securing her legal freedom. Liss’s escape with the British\, re-enslavement in Manhattan and later Charleston\, and her complex struggle for freedom gives new insight into the country’s founding era\, through the eyes of an enslaved Black woman seeking liberty in a country fighting for its own.
