SUMMARY:Saha Gnawa
DESCRIPTION:Saha Gnawa brings North African futurism to the U.S.\, uniting the founders of Innov Gnawa with leading figures from New York City’s jazz and contemporary music scenes to reimagine modern Gnawa music. Often referred to as “Sufi Blues\,” Gnawa is rooted in Morocco’s ancient history. Over centuries\, infectious rhythms and polytheistic spiritual beliefs originating from West African slaves integrated with Islam and the indigenous culture of Morocco\, giving birth to a hybrid spiritual sect and musical community. The lyrics of Gnawa songs are prayers invoking saints and spirits for freedom and liberation. Gnawa music is revered and treasured throughout Morocco for its soulfulness and healing power.

SUMMARY:Films At The Museum: “Fioretta”
DESCRIPTION:Screening and discussion. History-obsessed Randy Schoenberg (memorably portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in Woman in Gold) brings his reluctant teenage son Joey along for the journey of a lifetime\, through Europe and the centuries\, to reclaim 500 years of their family story. Along the way\, they encounter kings\, mystics\, and a false messiah — as well as numerous ordinary and extraordinary people who witnessed Europe’s tumultuous past. And the relationship between father and son is forever changed. Randy is renowned for recovering Nazi-looted art\, but his greatest achievement might just be reuniting the fractured and scattered shards of his own family.

SUMMARY:Liminal Lives: Trans between Weimar and Nazi Germany
DESCRIPTION:The story of trans life under Nazism is anticipated as tragic. Following the hard-won recognitions of gay and lesbian victims of the Holocaust and in the maelstrom of contemporary global attacks on trans existence\, scholarly and public investments in this history are at their apex—provoking debates in the German Bundestag and libel cases. Yet the content of this history remains largely unknown. Using granular archival research\, Zavier Nunn’s first book\, Liminal Lives: Trans between Weimar and Nazi Germany\, explores the micro and macro registers of how everyday trans life was experienced\, policed\, and cut short across the Weimar and Nazi regimes\, sometimes in surprising—but always uneven—ways. This talk sketches out the contours and stakes of this monograph\, the first definitive work on trans life before and after the Nazi’s rise to power.

SUMMARY:Jake Owen and Mark McIntyre
DESCRIPTION:Jake Owen and Mark McIntyre have been cultivating their friendship and musical unity in New York City since meeting in the downtown art-rock scene in 2015. Since then\, they have been developing their rare guitar symbiosis and taste for adventurous songwriting in off-hours recording sessions and through Mark’s long-term residency at the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village. Together\, they craft a new sound that lives somewhere between hypnotic Radiohead-style grooves\, Elliot Smith’s thoughtful intimacy\, and the electric spontaneity of Jimi Hendrix.

SUMMARY:Debut Novel 101
DESCRIPTION:McNally Jackson’s Publishing 101 series aims to demystify the publishing process through conversations with industry professionals who have seen it all. For our second event\, we welcome Laura McGrath\, Randy Winston\, and Isaac Fitzgerald to discuss all things “debut novel” — from building your byline and securing a publisher to promoting your book and “breaking out.” These days\, it can seem like debut novels are make-it-or-break-it — the projects against which all subsequent novels will be measured. Will you earn out your advance? Will your book receive coverage in national newspapers? Will mass retailers carry your book? All of these things are outside an author’s control\, but there are a few key steps you can take to boost your debut — and to make your first experience in publishing a positive one.
