SUMMARY:History and Heroism
DESCRIPTION:Join Jessica DuLong\, historian and author of Saved at the Seawall: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift\, and Robert Snyder\, Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus at Rutgers University\, for a conversation aboard tall ship Wavertree exploring the complexities of how historians\, artists\, and the public define “heroes” and how that perception can shift over time. Inspired by DuLong’s writing\, we will examine how choosing to emphasize heroic acts might “include more people in the circle of those who see themselves as helpers capable of heroism.” The panelists’ personal experiences surrounding the tragic events of 9/11 will serve as the catalyst for a thoughtful discussion delving into the complexities of heroic actions and how and when certain individuals obtain historical “heroic” status. A complimentary toast is included\, and copies of Saved at the Seawall will also be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Zhao Mengfu: Crown Jewel of the Yuan Literati
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture. Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322)\, legendary painter\, poet\, calligrapher and seal maker of the early Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368)\, is considered as one of the greatest and most influential masters of art and literature in China. His special brand of calligraphic style\, with fluidity\, strength and grace\, earned him the honorific title of the “School of Zhao”\, an art genre that is held in the highest esteem by all aficionados of Chinese culture. A pioneer of a new Yuan painting style\, Zhao was a master painter of figures\, horses\, flowers\, birds\, and especially landscapes. To mark the 700th anniversary of the passing of Zhao Mengfu and better appreciate the master’s artistic and literary creations\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on September 10 by Mr. Ben Wang\, Senior Lecturer of Language and Humanities of China Institute. Mr. Wang will present and analyze Zhao Mengfu’s versatile attainments in calligraphy\, painting\, poetry and seal-making.

SUMMARY:Freedomland: Co-op City and the Story of New York
DESCRIPTION:In Freedomland\, Annemarie Sammartino tells Co-op City’s story from the perspectives of those who built it and of the ordinary people who made their homes in this monument to imperfect liberal ideals of economic and social justice. Located on the grounds of the former Freedomland amusement park on the northeastern edge of the Bronx\, Co-op City’s 35 towers and 236 townhouses have been home to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. In 1965\, Co-op City was planned as the largest middle-class housing development in the United States. Intended as a solution to the problem of affordable housing\, Co-op City first appeared to be a huge success story for integrated\, middle-class housing. However\, tensions arose and led residents to organize the largest rent strike in American history. In 1975\, a coalition of shareholders secured resident control\, but even this achievement did not halt rising costs or white flight. Still\, the cooperative achieved a hard-won stability in the late 20th century. Freedomland chronicles the tumultuous first quarter century of Co-op City’s existence. Sammartino’s narrative connects planning\, economic\, and political history and the history of race in America.

SUMMARY:The Roaring 80’s: China’s Rising Indie Filmmakers
DESCRIPTION:China has been on the spotlight for its rapid urbanization and tremendous economic growth. Big cities form a major theme in the mainstream Chinese film industry. On September 13\, we will explore a different China —far from the bright lights of Shanghai and Beijing—with independent film scholar Karen Ma and Columbia University professor Richard Peña to talk about Karen’s new book: China’s Millennial Digital Generation: Conversations with Balinghou (Post-1980s) Indie Filmmakers. The book charts some of the newest cinematic and societal trends to emerge from China since the year 2000. It also features extended conversations with seven young indie artists born in the decade of 1980s—China’s first generation to benefit hugely not only from life-changing new technology\, including digital video cameras\, cell phones and the Internet\, but also an unprecedented film industry boom. Karen will explain her motivation for writing this book\, and how Chinese film is far more than Hollywood style blockbusters or star-powered comedies such as The Battle at Lake Changjin\, Hi\, Mom and Detective Chinatown franchise. The post-1980s generation of auteurs\, many from regional China\, have focused their cameras squarely on China’s backwater towns\, helping to shine a light on social concerns that are often missed in under-represented communities where tens of millions of Chinese still live.
