SUMMARY:The Entrepreneurs: The Relentless Quest for Value
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime talk. Entrepreneurs are among the primary shapers of our culture\, yet their role in driving progress and influencing society has often been overlooked. As far back as we can trace human history\, there have been entrepreneurs. Almost five millennia ago\, copper tool manufacturers set up a factory in what today is southwest Spain\, profiting for hundreds of years from trade around the Mediterranean. Papyri document the diverse investments of an ancient Egyptian businessman\, from grain-yielding land to flax for linen cloth. What do these figures have in common with renowned modern entrepreneurs\, and how do their similarities help us achieve a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship as well as the potential for a healthier\, wealthier and more equitable and sustainable future? Derek Lidow delves into the deep history of innovation to deliver essential new insights into how entrepreneurs create value and bring about change. Telling the captivating stories of people from many different cultures over thousands of years\, he shows how entrepreneurs transform the world through relentless innovation. Lidow demonstrates that far from being heroic lone individuals\, they copy and then add to the inventions of others. The cumulative innovations of swarms of entrepreneurs expand the scale\, scope and range of products and services. Lidow emphasizes how entrepreneurship can harm society as well as benefit it\, and he underscores ways to mitigate its harmful side and harness its positive effects. By highlighting the fundamental qualities of innovation\, this book provides indispensable new perspective on how it is shaping our present and future.

SUMMARY:Open House New York at the Wavertree
DESCRIPTION:Join the South Street Seaport Museum for a special behind-the-scenes tour of 1885 tall ship Wavertree. The 137-year-old Wavertree\, built of riveted wrought iron\, is an archetype of the sailing ships of the latter half of the 19th century that\, during the “age of sail\,” lined South Street by the dozens\, creating a forest of masts from the Battery to the Brooklyn Bridge. Seaport Museum staff and crew will take you to places around the ship not typically accessible to the general public. Guests will get a glimpse at how the historic fleet is maintained\, see “secret” nooks and crannies\, and get immersed in history while walking the entire length of Wavertree’s massive cargo hold. Also at 2pm and 4pm.

SUMMARY:Book of Ruth\, Featuring the Met Opera Chorus Artists: A Story of Courage\, Resilience\, and Hope
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Jewish Heritage is pleased to partner with the Met Opera Chorus Artists to present a memoir through music. In this special concert\, we will learn about Holocaust Survivor Ruth Wachner Pagirsky. Alongside beautiful music\, Ruth’s daughter and Museum Trustee Regina Skyer will share how her mother met hatred with humanity in an incredible story of courage\, resilience\, and hope. Born in Berlin\, Germany\, in 1926\, Ruth was only 13 years old when the war started in 1939. Fleeing first to the Polish forests\, and then a labor camp\, Ruth eventually obtained false identification papers that allowed her to hide in the open as a Polish Catholic. For three years\, Ruth posed as a mute\, hiding her German accented Polish – and her Jewish identity – until she was liberated in 1945. From Partisans Song to Fiddler on the Roof to Madame Butterfly and more\, Met Opera Chorus Artists will bring Ruth’s incredible story – and love for music – to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. It is fitting to tell Ruth’s story here at the Museum\, for she spent the majority of her life as a fierce advocate for Holocaust education and served as a member of our Speakers Bureau. Proceeds from this event will benefit Ruth’s final project: the Museum’s first children’s exhibition\, Courage to Act.

SUMMARY:IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works) by Sidra Bell Dance New York
DESCRIPTION:Gibney opens its 2022-23 presenting season at Gibney Center with the New York premiere of Sidra Bell Dance New York’s IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works). Marking the 20th anniversary of her company\, Sidra Bell Dance New York (SBDNY)\, the 65-minute program seamlessly connects excerpts from works choreographed by Bell for her company since its 2001 founding. The program has been described as “hypnotically seductive” and “brilliant and impressive\,” Bell’s aesthetic rings of “Pina Bausch\, fashion\, and Harlem’s ballrooms” in a unique\, visionary style that draws in audiences\, deeply. Her distinctive\, hyperkinetic movement and dramatic brilliance hone-in on the human psyche\, questions of identity and the shape of time. Sidra Bell\, who was named Gibney’s inaugural Artist-In-Residence (AiR) in July 2022\, is an acclaimed and prolific choreographer. Her work has been performed throughout the United States and abroad. The AiR program is a comprehensive support system for established creators that provides substantial\, diverse\, and multi-year support for a mid-career choreographer. IN | REP: Introspection is accompanied by a multimedia installation\, RETURN TO FORM: The Shape of Time\, An Installation by Sidra Bell Dance New York and the SBDNY Design Team\, featuring video\, objects\, performance ephemera\, drawings\, costumes\, dreams\, texts\, palettes\, and designs from the artists of Sidra Bell Dance New York and its collaborators over the past two decades.
