SUMMARY:Maya Deren: Choreographed for Camera
DESCRIPTION:Drama and myth frame the life and death of Maya Deren. Born in Kiev in 1917\, at the start of the Russian Revolution\, she died forty-four years later in New York City. In her brief life\, she established herself as a pioneering experimental filmmaker\, prolific writer\, accomplished photographer\, and crusader for a personal and poetic cinema. With its dreamy circular narrative and enigmatic imagery\, her first film\, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)\, has inspired generations of artists\, filmmakers\, and poets. Deren collaborated with numerous mid-century cultural luminaries\, including Katherine Dunham\, Marcel Duchamp\, John Cage\, Anais Nin\, and Gregory Bateson. In 1953\, she published Divine Horsemen\, a ground-breaking ethnographic study of Haitian religious culture. Although Deren completed only six short films in her lifetime\, her impact on the history of cinema is immeasurable. She has become the patron saint of 20th century experimental film. The aura that suffuses Deren’s legend emanates from the power of her films\, magnified by her bohemian glamour and visionary intelligence. This is the first full biography of Deren. Based on years of research\, interviews with some of Deren’s closest collaborators\, and generously illustrated with film stills and photographs\, author Mark Alice Durant creates a vivid and accessible narrative exploring the complexities and contradictions in the life and work of this remarkable and charismatic artist.

We will dive into the relationship between architects and their clients\, as kids choose their favorite animal and design an apartment based on its needs! Does a giraffe need an apartment with tall ceilings? Kids will use their imaginations to design homes for animal families (like an urban Noah’s Ark!) while considering accessibility\, health\, and views. Recommended for ages 4-8. RSVP required.

SUMMARY:Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York\, Inc. Evacuation Day Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Evacuation Day marked the final British evacuation from New York City in 1783\, after seven years of occupation. The evening culminated in a festive dinner given by Governor George Clinton\, honoring George Washington and his officers at Samuel Fraunces‘ tavern. Evacuation Day remained a New York City holiday into the 1910s\, with celebrations rivaling those of the Fourth of July. Celebrate as George Washington did that night\, by raising your glass for the very same thirteen toasts given at the first Evacuation Day Dinner at Fraunces Tavern on November 25\, 1783.

SUMMARY:Unequal Cities: Overcoming Anti-Urban Bias to Reduce Inequality in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Book presentation. Cities are central to prosperity: they are hubs of innovation and growth. Yet the economic vitality of wealthy cities is marred by persistent and pervasive inequality. In his new book Unequal Cities\, economist Richard McGahey argues that deeply entrenched anti-urban policies and politics limit cities’ options to address inequality. Many factors – structural racism\, suburban subsidies\, regional government fragmentation\, the hostility of state legislatures\, and federal policy – contribute to an unequal status quo that underfunds cities while preventing them from pursuing fairer outcomes. Drawing on economic and historical analysis as well as his extensive experience in government and philanthropy\, the author examines the failures of public policy and conventional economic wisdom that have led to the neglect of American cities.

SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism: Blood Libel
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, Jews have been accused of using the blood of non-Jews for “rituals.” This accusation\, which as come to be called “blood libel\,” dates to the second century BCE and continued to grow with the spread of Christianity. In the Middle Ages\, the motif made its way into art and literature like Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. These charges continued through the Nazi era; there was even an accusation in upstate New York in 1928. Today\, the Roman Catholic Church repudiates blood libel\, but accusations continue throughout the world. Join the Museum for a panel discussion about this history and the role it plays in contemporary antisemitism
