SUMMARY:In Other Lifetimes All I’ve Lost Comes Back to Me
DESCRIPTION:Populated with lovers who leave and return\, with ghosts of the Holocaust and messages from the dead\, Courtney Sender’s debut collection In Other Lifetimes All I’ve Lost Comes Back to Me speaks in a singular new voice about the longings and loneliness of contemporary love. The world of these fourteen interlocking stories is fiercely real but suffused with magic and myth\, dark wit\, and distinct humor. Here\, ancient loss works its way deep into the psyche of modern characters\, stirring their unrelenting lust for life. Listen to Sender read from and discuss her stunning story collection.

SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism: The Truths and Mysteries of Leo Frank
DESCRIPTION:Leo Frank was a pencil factory superintendent in Georgia in April 1913 when his coworker\, thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan\, was murdered. Her body was found in the factory’s basement\, and Frank was convicted of the crime and sentenced to death. Many since have examined the case and posited that Frank was denied a fair trial and unjustly convicted amid a wave of antisemitic fervor – it was this fervor that spurred a mob of people to storm the prison and lynch Frank on August 17\, 1915. Frank is the only Jew known to be murdered in this way in American history. Frank’s case has since become the subject of multiple investigations and alleged-coverups\, not to mention books\, movies\, and the current Broadway revival of the musical Parade.

SUMMARY:The Moon is Just a Mirror: Lantern Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:Artists Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky host a special evening event marking the transformation of their installation\, there is nothing you can think that is not the moon\, on view at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC)‘s Arts Center at Governors Island. This installation currently houses over 300 handmade lanterns the artists started making in 2022. Rhonda and Trevor invite you to take home one of these unique lanterns\, a rare opportunity to receive an artwork and give these lanterns an extended life. The parade of illuminated lanterns leaving the exhibition will create a scattering of light\, reminiscent of traditional lantern festivals. The making and sharing of these lanterns is an evolving aspect of the duo’s practice where they create an economy of copying\, sharing and remaking objects. The current lanterns will be replaced by lanterns visitors have made during special workshops with Rhonda\, that replicate objects they have lost or given away. These lanterns\, small time capsules of visitor’s memories mirroring objects that once existed\, will remain on view at LMCC’s Arts Center through winter.

SUMMARY:Harry Seidler’s Australia Square: Sydney’s First Modern Skyscraper
DESCRIPTION:Completed in 1967\, six years before Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House\, Australia Square was the first truly modern skyscraper on the continent and\, arguably\, the world’s tallest lightweight concrete building. The 50-story cylindrical tower once stood alone as the focal point of a full city-block development in Central Sydney and with a popular plaza that made the complex the first successful large-scale commercial project in Australia. Vienna-born emigré architect Harry Seidler (1923-2006) brought his Harvard GSD and Black Mountain College training and experience in the offices of Marcel Breuer and Oscar Niemeier to his adoptive Australia where he became the country’s leading postwar modernist from 1948 on. Australia Square also began Seidler’s creative collaboration with Italian structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi\, with whom he worked on a number of large projects.

SUMMARY:“FOUR WINTERS” Film & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“All I owned was a rifle\, a leopard coat and my camera\,” says Faye Schulman\, whose clandestine photographs of Jewish partisans living in the forests documented their efforts to disrupt the Nazi killing machine by blowing up bridges\, derailing trains\, and smuggling Jews. The image of Schulman with an ammunition belt slung over her fashionable shoulder is one of many stunning archival images in this historically important documentary. Against extraordinary odds\, over 25\,000 Jewish partisans escaped Nazi slaughter and fought back against Hitler’s soldiers and their collaborators from deep within WWII’s primeval forests. In this award-winning film\, some of the last surviving partisans tell their story\, from young innocents facing down a ruthless enemy\, cold\, hunger\, and fear\, to becoming courageous resistance fighters with great determination\, altruism\, and resourcefulness. As fierce and skilled soldiers\, they joined together and formed partisan brigades. Shattering the myth of Jewish passivity\, FOUR WINTERS reveals a truthful\, inspiring and riveting narrative of heroism and resilience.
