SUMMARY:Times Square Remade: The Dynamics of Urban Change
DESCRIPTION:What is it about Times Square that has inspired such attention for well over a century? In her new book\, Times Square Remade: The Dynamics of Urban Change\, Lynne Sagalyn examines the three main forces that have shaped and reshaped Times Square—theater\, real estate\, and pornography—and explains the politics and economics of what got built and what has been restored or preserved. Twenty years after her widely acclaimed Times Square Roulette\, Sagalyn returns to New York’s most popular and symbolic urban space\, analyzing how the public-private transformation of 42nd St. has impacted the entertainment district and adjacent neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:Huzzah! Drinking with John Hancock during the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:When John Hancock needed to win people over\, he didn’t talk about resisting taxes or policy improvements; instead\, he served alcohol. He offered rum punch and wine at his home and paid for lavish meals in taverns to bring people together. Guests included lower class men\, French officers\, and Black women and men. By throwing parties\, Hancock gained social and political power among myriad groups\, which repeatedly paid dividends. He was consistently elected to political office and when he smuggled madeira into Boston\, one of the most memorable and violent mobs during colonial resistance defended him. In this forty-five-minute talk\, Brooke Barbier will discuss an oft-ignored aspect of colonial life: the high rate of alcohol consumption. Join us for lively and evocative stories and images that illuminate the critical and complex role that alcohol played in the social\, political\, and cultural fabric of the American Revolution and how John Hancock used it to his advantage.

SUMMARY:Tove Bamberger’s Danish Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Tove Bamberger (née Schonbaum) was born in Copenhagen in 1934 and raised as a secular Jew. When the Germans invaded Denmark in April 1940\, life in the country continued largely unchanged until September 1943\, when Hitler issued a deportation order for all Danish Jews. Tove’s family\, along with 95% of Danish Jews\, fled to Sweden on a fishing boat. Tove attended a Danish school set up for the refugees in Sweden\, and when the war ended her family returned to their home in Copenhagen. There\, she married Niels Bamberger\, who had experienced the same rescue and return. In 1955\, after Tove’s high school graduation\, Tove and Niels immigrated\, settling in Washington Heights\, New York\, where they raised two daughters. Tove will discuss her story of escape and return\, her life in Sweden\, and what her life was like after World War II in this Danish Rescue Stories Survive program.

SUMMARY:Fresh Prints
DESCRIPTION:This open house will feature a breadth of printing equipment that you will be invited to use. You’ll get to see how the designers at Bowne lock up limited edition designs that will showcase some of the more eccentric parts from the Seaport Museum’s printing and graphic arts collection. Established in 1775\, this letterpress print shop is the city’s oldest operating business under the same name. Today\, the shop continues the age-old tradition of job (or small batch) printing. Advanced registration is required for this free workshop but walkups will be accommodated as possible. Anyone ages 12 and up is welcome. All participants get to take home the items they print during the afternoon.

SUMMARY:What They Wanted Us to Know: Disinformation\, Rumors\, and Ignorance in the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Antisemitic disinformation was a hallmark of the Nazi regime\, from its early rise in 1933. Access to information can make the difference between life and death\, especially for the Jews of Europe during World War II. German occupiers attempted to – and largely succeeded at – controlling the flow of information through newspapers\, radio\, and the spread of false rumors. When witnesses and fugitives returned to ghettos and told their stories about the death camps\, few believed what they heard; Nazi propaganda fueled these doubts. This lecture will explore the methods Nazis used in their attempts to control their citizens during the Holocaust\, and how this history might shed light on our current information environment.

SUMMARY:Gibney Presents: 2nd Best Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:2nd Best Dance Company brings its signature style to the Gibney stage with the world premiere of The myth of forward motion (or\, The Box Dance). Physically rigorous\, sometimes virtuosic\, almost always slapstick\, this new work walks the line between dance performance and nonlinear play\, leaning into both text and movement to examine the sensation of being stuck – in a place\, a memory\, a thought pattern\, or a life that’s headed in one particular direction.
