SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism: Mendel Beilis
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 20\, 1911\, children playing in a cave near Kiev made a gruesome discovery: the blood-soaked body of a partially clad boy. After right-wing groups asserted that the killing was a ritual murder\, the police\, with no direct evidence\, arrested Menachem Mendel Beilis\, a 39-year-old Jewish manager at a factory near the site of the crime. Beilis’s trial in 1913 quickly became an international cause célèbre. The jury ultimately acquitted Beilis but held that the crime had the hallmarks of a ritual murder. Robert Weinberg’s book Blood Libel in Late Imperial Russia: The Ritual Murder Trial of Mendel Beilis explores the reasons why the tsarist government framed Beilis\, shedding light on the excesses of antisemitism in late Imperial Russia.

SUMMARY:The Modern Concrete Skyscraper: Translations in Concrete: Montreal’s Place Victoria
DESCRIPTION:In 1965\, the 47-story and 623ft/190m Place Victoria in Montreal’s financial district\, also known as the Stock Exchange Tower or Tour de la Bourse\, surpassed Chicago’s 1000 Lake Shore Plaza as the world’s tallest concrete skyscraper. Designed and built from 1960-1965 by Italian architect Luigi Moretti and Italian structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi\, along with a team of professionals based in both Montreal and in Italy\, the project brought together expertise from both sides of the Atlantic. In her talk\, based on research for her dissertation\, Katie Filek will detail the use of concrete in the tower and discuss how the project was the product of highly localized conditions of costs\, materials\, and labour in Montreal that relied on the specialized knowledge of Montreal-based architects and engineers for its realization.

SUMMARY:Divine Muse: Honoring St. Cecilia
DESCRIPTION:The Divine Muse series culminates on the eve of Saint Cecilia’s Feast Day\, with two master works inspired by the patron saint of music: George Frideric Handel’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day Overture and Alessandro Scarlatti’s St. Cecilia Mass. Joyce adds wind instruments to the original orchestration.

SUMMARY:Filmmakers for the Prosecution
DESCRIPTION:Adapted from Sandra Schulberg’s monograph\, Filmmakers for the Prosecution retraces the hunt for film evidence that could convict the Nazis at the Nuremberg Trial. The searchers were two sons of Hollywood – brothers Budd and Stuart Schulberg – serving under the command of OSS film chief John Ford. The motion pictures they presented in the courtroom became part of the official record and shape our understanding of the Holocaust to this day. Seventy-five years after the trial\, French journalist and filmmaker Jean-Christophe Klotz returns to the German salt mines where films lay burning\, uncovers never-before-seen footage\, and interviews key figures to unravel why the resulting film about the trial – Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today by Stuart Schulberg – was intentionally buried by the U.S. Department of War. Klotz’s riveting film also fills in the gaps of how these groundbreaking materials were sourced\, and poses still-pertinent questions about documentarians’ obligations to posterity.

SUMMARY:Opening Doors: The Unlikely Alliance Between the Irish and the Jews in America
DESCRIPTION:Popular belief holds that the various ethnic groups that emigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century regarded one another with open hostility\, fiercely competing for limited resources and even coming to blows in the crowded neighborhoods of major cities. In Opening Doors\,Hasia R. Diner\, one of the world’s preeminent historians of immigration\, tells a very different story; far from confrontational\, the prevailing relationships between Jewish and Irish Americans were overwhelmingly cooperative\, and the two groups were dependent upon one another to secure stable and upwardly mobile lives in their new home. The Irish had emigrated to American cities en masse a generation before the first major wave of Jewish immigrants arrived\, and had already entrenched themselves in positions of influence in urban governments\, public education\, and the labor movement. Jewish newcomers recognized the value of aligning themselves with another group of religious outsiders who were able to stand up and demand rights and respect despite widespread discrimination from the Protestant establishment\, and the Irish realized that they could protect their political influence by mentoring their new neighbors in the intricacies of American life. Opening Doors draws from a deep well of historical sources to show how Irish and Jewish Americans became steadfast allies in classrooms\, picket lines\, and political machines\, and ultimately helped one another become key power players in shaping America’s future.

SUMMARY:“Blind Spot” Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Blind Spot is the first film to document both the antisemitism that existed on American campuses long before October 7 and how it led to the explosion of virulent and often violent campus antisemitism after October 7. A modern-day civil rights story told in the inspiring words and voices of more than two dozen students who’ve experienced and fought against this hatred on the front lines at more than a dozen schools across America\, Blind Spot bears witness to their bravery in the face of extreme hostility\, indifference\, and efforts to silence them and erase their Jewish identity while too many school administrators fail to take action. Joining and supporting the students in the film are more than two dozen professionals\, including leading activist lawyers\, elected officials from both parties\, faculty\, campus Chabad and Hillel directors and other Jewish community leaders\, college administrators\, and journalists/authors\, who express their views and prescriptions for change.
