DESCRIPTION:At 3pm tour the African Burial Ground National Monument\, 290 Broadway. At 5pm\, attend a symposium at the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse\, 40 Foley Square. Much of Black history in New York revolves around Foley Square. This is a two-part event. First\, we will have a tour of the African Burial Ground with its architect Rodney Leon\, including a look at some of the artworks commissioned for the Burial Ground which depict the experience of enslaved people. This will be followed by the second part of the program highlighting three legal pioneers — Justice Thurgood Marshall\, Judge Constance Baker Motley\, and Judge Robert L. Carter — who collaborated at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund before going on to preside on the federal bench at Foley Square.

DESCRIPTION:Long before their country joined the war\, American aid workers were active in rescue efforts across Europe. In this presentation\, renowned Holocaust scholar Debórah Dwork will focus on such Americans\, many of whom were women. Some\, followed by Nazi agents\, learned secrecy as they spirited people across borders. Others negotiated with government representatives. The new book Saints and Liars illuminates the unpredictable circumstances and often fast-changing historical events with which these rescuers contended\, while revealing the moral questions they encountered and the devastating decisions they had to make. Drawing on a multitude of archival documents\, from letters to diaries and memos\, Prof. Dwork offers a rare glimpse into the lives of individuals who – at times with their organizations’ backing\, but sometimes against their directives – sought to help people find safe-haven from persecution.

Some hail Wang as a near-perfect figure of the past 500 years—a man of extraordinary intellect and capability\, who excelled in governance and military strategy. Admirers argue that Wang’s ideas inspired generations of intellectuals and ordinary people alike\, profoundly influencing modern Chinese society. Prominent figures such as Zeng Guofan\, Sun Yat-sen\, Chiang Kai-shek\, and even a young Mao Zedong were said to hold him in high regard. However\, others take a more critical stance. They point out Wang’s tumultuous life and unfulfilled ambitions\, suggesting that he fell short of achieving the traditional ideal of a scholar-official. Some go as far as dismissing his philosophy as pure idealism\, irrelevant to modern realities.

DESCRIPTION:Micca Manganye and Volley Nchabeleng use an array of instruments\, bodily percussion\, and musical communication to explore the many sounds and narratives of South Africa’s northernmost province. Birdsong\, the sound of the wind\, the trickling of a stream\, conversation\, laughter\, and more are performed and looped in real-time\, layering sound and music together to form a vivid sonic tapestry that is equal parts immersive and invigorating\, alive with the sounds of Limpopo.
