SUMMARY:China Institute Spring Literati Salon
DESCRIPTION:Come to China Institute to experience a literati salon (文人雅集) inspired by ancient traditions\, and enjoy an evening of classical music\, poetry\, calligraphy—and wine! With the spring in full bloom\, let’s celebrate the joy of coming back to China Institute for an evening with artists\, musicians\, and literature experts. Attendees will enjoy performances and an unforgettable cultural experience that promotes solidarity\, friendship and peace. At China’s traditional “literati salons\,” scholars connected with nature\, art\, and music while sipping tea and wine. At the most famous of these events\, the Orchid Pavilion Gathering (兰亭雅集) in the year 353\, 42 gentlemen held a famous drinking contest\, in which they floated their rice-wine cups down a winding creek as they sat along its banks. Whenever a cup stopped\, the man closest to the cup had to empty it and write a poem. In the end\, they produced 37 poems and Wang Xizhi (王羲之 produced Preface to the Poems of the Orchid Pavilion (《兰亭集序》）\, the finest calligraphic art in China’s history. The event has since fueled inspiration for all forms of Chinese art. Tea and wine will be served.

SUMMARY:Art from Tragedy: Molly Crabapple and Sara Softness in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s exhibition\, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try centers around the “War Series” of the artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. However\, Lurie is not the only artist who has chronicled war and tragedy. Others such as Chittaprosad Bhattacharya\, Francisco Goya\, Otto Dix\, and Käthe Kollwitz also used art to illustrate their feelings about war\, famine\, and other tragedies. Join the Museum for a program about these artists and their work to celebrate the launch of the catalogue of Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try. The exhibition’s curator Sara Softness will be in conversation with artist Molly Crabapple about these different artists and where Lurie’s work fits into this long tradition.

SUMMARY:Waterfront Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Waterfront Alliance’s annual Waterfront Conference – now in its 15th year – is the region’s premier forum exploring the challenges of and solutions to climate change\, sustaining a strong maritime industry and regional economy\, equitable access at our waterfronts and to our shared waterways\, and a healthier open-space environment. Communities across the country are increasingly preparing for the new age of weather due to human-caused climate change. As actions are globally undertaken to limit the scale of climate change\, greater attention must be paid to redesigning communities\, enhancing their ability both to adapt to conditions that are becoming a “new normal” and to recover from climate impacts in a resilient manner. Infusions of federal and state funding for our region offer chances for major change unlike any other in recent time. We have a once in a generation opportunity to ensure we prepare for the climate future\, invest in vital infrastructure\, and support the needs of the most vulnerable.

SUMMARY:Music from Auschwitz: A Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance for Music From Auschwitz\, a series of two evening concerts. The concerts will feature ten short musical pieces arranged by Polish political prisoners who were members of the men’s orchestra in the Auschwitz I camp. Using popular German hits of the 1930s and 40s\, they arranged and orchestrated these tangos\, waltzes\, and foxtrots for a dance band that played Sunday concerts for the Auschwitz garrison near the camp commandant’s villa. The musical pieces were recently rediscovered in the archives of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland. Led by conductor Oriol Sans\, a University of Michigan student orchestra will perform the original musical pieces interspersed with lines\, spoken by the singers\, from testimonies and interviews with members of the Auschwitz I men’s orchestra after the war. Silent for more than seventy years\, the voices and stirring melodies of those imprisoned at Auschwitz will be brought to life in the Museum’s Edmond J. Safra Hall.

SUMMARY:Wellington Koo: The Top Diplomat in the Republican China
DESCRIPTION:A graduate from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in international law and diplomacy in 1912\, Wellington Koo (顾维钧) witnessed and participated in many historical international events in the Republican era of China. He was China’s plenipotentiary to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919\, where he made a decision that would steer the history of China and leave his mark on world history by refusing to sign the Treaty of Versailles; served as the Ambassador to France\, Great Britain and the United States; was a participant in the founding of the League of Nations and the United Nations; and sat as a judge on the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1957 to 1967. Between October 1926 and June 1927\, while serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs\, Koo briefly held the concurrent positions of acting Premier and interim President of the Republic of China. While his presidency was brief\, his extraordinary lifespan of 97 years makes him the longest-living person to ever have led China.
