SUMMARY:“Saving Freud” Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:In March 1938\, German soldiers crossed the border into Austria\, which was absorbed into Hitler’s Third Reich. Anticipating this\, many Jews fled Austria. Sigmund Freud\, however\, stayed in his hometown of Vienna\, even as prominent people who were close to him undertook a coordinated effort to persuade him to emigrate to England. Join the Museum and Andrew Nagorski\, author of Saving Freud\, to celebrate the book’s launch and learn the story of how this remarkable collection of people finally succeeded in coaxing Freud to immigrate to London\, where he lived the last sixteen months of his life in freedom. The program will be moderated by Sylvia Nasar\, Knight Professor Emerita at Columbia Journalism School.

DESCRIPTION:Maritime-themed book club that meets monthly. Tonight\, talk about Dactyl Hill Squad: It’s 1863\, and dinosaurs roam the streets of New York as the Civil War rages between raptor-mounted armies down South. SUMMARY:From WWII to the Space Race: The Story of Project Paperclip
DESCRIPTION:Between 1945 and the 1960s\, the United States government brought more than 1\,500 German scientists and engineers into the country through Project Paperclip to work on guided missiles\, jet and rocket engines\, aerodynamics\, aerospace medicine\, and submarine technology. The U.S. hoped these specialists could give them an advantage at the end of WWII and into the Cold War. Over time\, many of the Germans disappeared into American military\, industrial\, and academic positions. However\, one of them\, Wernher von Braun\, became prominent through his involvement in the Space Race.

SUMMARY:Shaunna J. Edwards and Alyson Richman Present The Thread Collectors
DESCRIPTION:Reading. Registration required. 1863: In a small Creole cottage in New Orleans\, an ingenious young Black woman named Stella embroiders intricate maps on repurposed cloth to help enslaved men flee and join the Union Army. Bound to a man who would kill her if he knew of her clandestine activities\, Stella has to hide not only her efforts but her love for William\, a Black soldier and a brilliant musician. Meanwhile\, in New York City\, a Jewish woman stitches a quilt for her husband\, who is stationed in Louisiana with the Union Army. Between abolitionist meetings\, Lily rolls bandages and crafts quilts with her sewing circle for other soldiers\, too\, hoping for their safe return home. But when months go by without word from her husband\, Lily resolves to make the perilous journey South to search for him. As these two women risk everything for love and freedom during the brutal Civil War\, their paths converge in New Orleans\, where an unexpected encounter leads them to discover that even the most delicate threads have the capacity to save us. Loosely inspired by the authors’ family histories\, this stunning novel will stay with readers for a long time.

SUMMARY:Susan Coll Presents Bookish People\, in conversation with Julie Klam
DESCRIPTION:Reading. A perfect storm of comedic proportions erupts in a DC bookstore over the course of one soggy summer week–narrated by two very different women and punctuated by political turmoil\, a celestial event\, and a perpetually broken vacuum cleaner.

SUMMARY:Modern Jewish Sounds Concert: Daniel Kahn
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-born\, Berlin-based troubadour Daniel Kahn’s music mixes Yiddish\, English\, Russian\, and German with a distinctly punk and folk flavor. The Museum’s Modern Jewish Sounds concert series welcomes Kahn to the stage along with his dear friends Jake Shulman-Ment\, Sarah Gordon\, Lorin Sklamberg\, and other comrades for an intimate evening of new and old songs that cross the borders of languages\, cultures\, generations\, and worlds. Drawing on the repertoire of his cult cabaret band the Painted Bird as well as his most recent solo album word beggar\, his music also engages with such bards as Gebertig\, Okudzhava\, Dylan\, and Cohen. Experience Daniel Kahn’s return to the US with his bag full of broken ballads\, crooked klezmer\, prison laments\, revolutionary hymns\, and apocalyptic blues.
