SUMMARY:Modern Jewish Sounds Concert: Jake Sherman Dream Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Boston\, Jake Sherman learned classical piano by listening to his father play Bach every morning. If not for an intervention – stumbling upon the catalog of Weird Al Yankovic – he would have followed in his father’s path or perhaps become a jazz purist. Fast forward some years and it’s clear Jake has found a way to combine his appreciation of great songwriting with his piano/organ-playing prowess. He has become a go-to musician on recordings\, and tours for artists including Meshell Ndegeocello\, Bilal\, Emily King\, Blood Orange\, Benny Sings\, Doyle Bramhall II\, Gabriel Garzon-Montano\, Andrew Bird\, and Nick Hakim. His most recent album\, Jake Sherman Gets Sexy\, is a journey through modern dating and relationships\, with a point of view that is somehow both poignant and Weird Al-esque. The Museum’s Modern Jewish Sounds series welcomes Jake Sherman Dream Band to the stage of Edmond J. Safra Hall.

SUMMARY:Seeking Modernity in China’s Name: Chinese Students in the United States 1900-1927
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture in Chinese. On August 11\, 1872\, a group of 30 Chinese government-sponsored students departed from Shanghai and embarked on a transpacific journey to study in the United States. They were led by Yung Wing\, presumably the first Chinese student to have studied in the U.S. from 1847-1854. This history-making journey has since been referred to by researchers as the first wave of the Chinese youth studying in the U.S. To mark the 150th anniversary of this historical event and the 110th anniversary of the passing of Yung Wing\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on September 24 by Dr. Ye Weili.

SUMMARY:Seaport Museum Book Club: Saved at the Seawall: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift
DESCRIPTION:New\, maritime-themed book club. Literary selections are announced one month in advance\, and Seaport Museum staff and special guests will stir up lively discussions\, informed by a shared love of literature\, history\, and preservation. ‘Saved at the Seawall’ is the definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation. Jessica DuLong reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters\, residents\, and visitors out of harm’s way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for “all available boats\,” tugs\, ferries\, dinner boats\, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours\, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Valencia
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle to virtually explore the Jewish heritage of Valencia\, the third-largest city in Spain. We will discuss the early history of the community during the Muslim period\, when several notable Jewish figures including the poet and philosopher Solomon ibn Gabirol lived in the city. We will also discover the Jewish Quarter of Valencia\, which was one of the largest Jewish Quarters in the Iberian Peninsula and held a cemetery and a number of synagogues. Our guide will tell us the story of the attack on the Jewish community in 1391\, which led many Jews to convert to Christianity or flee the city. Lastly\, we will uncover the history of the conversos in Valencia\, many of whom sailed to points east to return to Judaism.

SUMMARY:Modern Jewish Sounds Concert: Dida Pelled
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based\, Native Tel-Avivian\, Dida Pelled\, is widely regarded as the greatest jazz guitarist this side of the Mississippi. Pelled’s ambitions took shape as a child\, when\, entranced by bebop\, she sequestered herself from the world and resolved to master guitar\, later earning a spot in the Israeli Army band before training at the New School on a scholarship to study jazz. She quickly made a name for herself in the New York jazz scene\, recording with Jazz masters like Roy Hargrove and Gregory Hutchinson and touring the world. As her jazz star rose\, Pelled felt a pull toward classic American songwriting\, shifting her direction and redefining her voice. Love Of The Tiger\, Pelled’s upcoming album\, is the product of a jazz prodigy gone rogue.
