SUMMARY:Easy Money: American Puritans and the Invention of Modern Currency
DESCRIPTION:Economists endlessly debate the nature of legal tender monetary systems—coins and bills issued by a government or other authority. Yet the origins of these currencies have received little attention. Dror Goldberg tells the story of modern money in North America through the Massachusetts colony during the 17th century. As the young settlement transitioned to self-governance and its economy grew\, the need to formalize a smooth exchange emerged. Printing local money followed. Easy Money illustrates how colonists invented contemporary currency by shifting its foundation from intrinsically valuable goods—such as silver—to the taxation of the state. Goldberg traces how this structure grew into a worldwide system in which\, monetarily\, we are all Massachusetts. Weaving economics\, law\, and American history\, Easy Money is a new touchstone in the story of monetary systems.

SUMMARY:China Institute Calligraphy Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Come to China Institute to learn\, explore\, and practice calligraphy\, an ancient art that cultivates appreciation of art and culture\, language learning\, and self-wellness in general. A unique way of writing that incorporates brushwork\, composition\, and balance to create an expressive piece of artwork\, Chinese calligraphy has been widely considered as the finest form of art in China for over two thousand years. Focusing on writing characters\, Chinese calligraphy creates aesthetically beautiful yet almost exclusively personal artwork through skillful hand-eye coordination and mental focus. By pushing the soft brush soaked in ink on a piece of specially made rice paper\, one will develop a deep sense of body-mind connection while the repetition of practicing and writing can simply be meditative and relaxing. To make it accessible for all to explore\, learn and enjoy the writing of Chinese calligraphy\, this monthly program offers 2-hour open sessions where participants of various experience of calligraphic writing can attend\, with the facilitation from our calligraphy instructor and dedicated staff. No experience is required. Ink\, paper\, and brush will be provided onsite. Simply come\, enjoy writing\, and find likeminded fellow calligraphers. Explore a new culture or connect to your heritage.

SUMMARY:Building the Empire State
DESCRIPTION:Livestreamed. Constructed in eleven months\, the 1250-foot Empire State Building\, the world’s tallest skyscraper from 1931 to 1971\, was a marvel of modern engineering. The frame rose more than a story a day; no comparable building since has matched that rate of ascent. The construction was orchestrated by general contractors Starrett Brothers & Eken\, premier “skyline builders” of the 1920s. From their records\, the company compiled an in-house notebook. Twenty-five years ago\, in 1998\, the hardcover edition of Building the Empire State was the first publication from the archives of the newly-founded Skyscraper Museum. The book is still in print with WW Norton\, now in paperback. Join the authors of the historical essays that frame the original manuscript notebook of the buildings Starrett Brothers & Eken\, Carol Willis and Don Friedman\, for a look back at the book and the building. Appropriately\, our online program will take place on the 92nd anniversary of the Empire State’s opening day!

SUMMARY:To Paint the Earth in Concert
DESCRIPTION:In person and livestreamed. To Paint the Earth is the Richard Rodgers’ Award-winning musical that tells the story of the Jewish Underground in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943 and its stunning decision to fight back. In the tradition of “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Les Misérables\,” and inspired by memoirs\, video\, and first-hand accounts from survivors\, To Paint the Earth is a sweeping musical about those who were pushed to the brink but refused to give up – ordinary people who\, together\, planned an armed rebellion despite the overwhelming challenges they faced. This performance commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and is a first-ever orchestrated concert version of the musical.
