SUMMARY:Freedomland: Co-op City and the Story of New York
DESCRIPTION:In Freedomland\, Annemarie Sammartino tells Co-op City’s story from the perspectives of those who built it and of the ordinary people who made their homes in this monument to imperfect liberal ideals of economic and social justice. Located on the grounds of the former Freedomland amusement park on the northeastern edge of the Bronx\, Co-op City’s 35 towers and 236 townhouses have been home to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. In 1965\, Co-op City was planned as the largest middle-class housing development in the United States. Intended as a solution to the problem of affordable housing\, Co-op City first appeared to be a huge success story for integrated\, middle-class housing. However\, tensions arose and led residents to organize the largest rent strike in American history. In 1975\, a coalition of shareholders secured resident control\, but even this achievement did not halt rising costs or white flight. Still\, the cooperative achieved a hard-won stability in the late 20th century. Freedomland chronicles the tumultuous first quarter century of Co-op City’s existence. Sammartino’s narrative connects planning\, economic\, and political history and the history of race in America.

SUMMARY:The Roaring 80’s: China’s Rising Indie Filmmakers
DESCRIPTION:China has been on the spotlight for its rapid urbanization and tremendous economic growth. Big cities form a major theme in the mainstream Chinese film industry. On September 13\, we will explore a different China —far from the bright lights of Shanghai and Beijing—with independent film scholar Karen Ma and Columbia University professor Richard Peña to talk about Karen’s new book: China’s Millennial Digital Generation: Conversations with Balinghou (Post-1980s) Indie Filmmakers. The book charts some of the newest cinematic and societal trends to emerge from China since the year 2000. It also features extended conversations with seven young indie artists born in the decade of 1980s—China’s first generation to benefit hugely not only from life-changing new technology\, including digital video cameras\, cell phones and the Internet\, but also an unprecedented film industry boom. Karen will explain her motivation for writing this book\, and how Chinese film is far more than Hollywood style blockbusters or star-powered comedies such as The Battle at Lake Changjin\, Hi\, Mom and Detective Chinatown franchise. The post-1980s generation of auteurs\, many from regional China\, have focused their cameras squarely on China’s backwater towns\, helping to shine a light on social concerns that are often missed in under-represented communities where tens of millions of Chinese still live.

SUMMARY:The Valuation Treadmill
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime talk with UCLA Law Professor James Park\, author of the forthcoming book The Valuation Treadmill: How Securities Fraud Threatens the Integrity of Public Companies\, who will discuss the history of securities fraud regulation from the 1960s until the present. Public companies now face constant pressure to meet investor expectations. The typical public company must continually deliver strong short-term performance every quarter to maintain its stock price. This valuation treadmill creates incentives for corporations to deceive investors. Published 20 years after the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley\, which requires all public companies to invest in measures to ensure the accuracy of their disclosures\, The Valuation Treadmill shows how securities fraud became a major regulatory concern. Drawing on case studies of paradigmatic securities enforcement actions involving Xerox\, Penn Central\, Apple\, Enron\, Citigroup and General Electric\, the book argues that corporate securities fraud emerged as investors increasingly valued companies based on their future performance. Corporations now have an incentive to issue unrealistically optimistic disclosure to convince markets that their success will continue. Securities regulation must do more to protect the integrity of public companies from the pressure of the valuation treadmill.

SUMMARY:Music Chat: The Art of Qin
DESCRIPTION:The elegance of Qin (translated as “lute” above)\, a seven-string zither\, has been well recognized since ancient China\, as this 3rd Century poem indicates. For a long time\, it is the instrument celebrated mostly among a small number of highly educated scholars for not only the music it makes\, but also the atheistic\, philosophic\, even moral sophistications it symbolizes. Join China Institute’s Music Chat on Qin with scholar and Qin musician\, Mingmei Yip\, to explore and experience the art of Qin\, and its fascinating journey as an (almost) cultural relic to the stage of Olympic opening ceremony\, and the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, through an illustrated presentation and dynamic dialogues\, as well as Qin performances by Dr. Yip.

SUMMARY:Investing in the Era of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime talk. A climate catastrophe can be avoided\, but only with a rapid and sustained investment in companies and projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To the surprise of many\, this has already begun. Investors are abandoning fossil-fuel companies and other polluting industries and financing businesses offering climate solutions. Rising risks\, evolving social norms\, government policies and technological innovation are all accelerating this movement of capital. Bruce Usher offers an indispensable guide to the risks and opportunities for investors as the world faces climate change. He explores the role that investment plays in reducing emissions to net zero by 2050\, detailing how to finance the winners and avoid the losers in a transforming global economy. Usher argues that careful examination of climate solutions will offer investors a new and necessary lens on the future for their own financial benefit and for the greater good. Companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions will create great wealth\, and\, more importantly\, they will provide a lifeline for humanity. Grounded in academic and industry research\, Usher’s insights bring clarity to a complex and controversial topic while illuminating the people behind the numbers. This book sets out a practical and actionable plan for investors to alter the course of climate change.

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Jon Brolin and Roy Behren of the Merger Fund
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime talk. A climate catastrophe can be avoided\, but only with a rapid and sustained investment in coMerger arbitrage\, or merger arb\, is the investment specialty focused on investing in announced mergers\, acquisitions\, takeovers and other corporate reorganizations. It is a practice that combines math\, judgment and a keen understanding of various legal\, regulatory and industry dynamics. How do these arbitrageurs practice their craft? What skills do they require? What frameworks do they employ? How has the industry been involved in the past few decades and where is it going? How should an inspiring candidate think about opportunities in this field? This is a lunchtime conversation between Roy Behren\, co-president and co-chief investment officer at Westchester Capital Management LLC\, as he discusses his 35-year history in the investment industry\, including his expertise in merger arb and 15 years as portfolio manager of the Merger Fund\, with Jonathan Brolin\, founder and managing partner of Edenbrook Capital LLC.

SUMMARY:Modern Jewish Sounds Concert: Jake Sherman Dream Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Boston\, Jake Sherman learned classical piano by listening to his father play Bach every morning. If not for an intervention – stumbling upon the catalog of Weird Al Yankovic – he would have followed in his father’s path or perhaps become a jazz purist. Fast forward some years and it’s clear Jake has found a way to combine his appreciation of great songwriting with his piano/organ-playing prowess. He has become a go-to musician on recordings\, and tours for artists including Meshell Ndegeocello\, Bilal\, Emily King\, Blood Orange\, Benny Sings\, Doyle Bramhall II\, Gabriel Garzon-Montano\, Andrew Bird\, and Nick Hakim. His most recent album\, Jake Sherman Gets Sexy\, is a journey through modern dating and relationships\, with a point of view that is somehow both poignant and Weird Al-esque. The Museum’s Modern Jewish Sounds series welcomes Jake Sherman Dream Band to the stage of Edmond J. Safra Hall.
