SUMMARY:Gibney Deeper Duet: Talvin Wilks + Melanie George
DESCRIPTION:Permission\, appropriation or trespassing – the tricky terrain of 2 Black Dramaturgs in the current “We See You” performance landscape told through personal case studies\, observations\, rants\, riffs and realizations. Melanie George and Talvin Wilks\, friends\, colleagues\, and confidantes\, will talk their way through the current cultural moment from their vantage points as Dramaturgs While Black (DWB). Utilizing\, purposefully\, a Black lens to view the American Theatre and Dance industries\, the conversation seeks to navigate the concept of appropriation vs. elucidation in the choices that many BIPOC dramaturgs have made and continue to have to make in this era of reckoning\, solidarity and wokeness. In it they question and challenge their own responsibility and accountability to Black artists and address some of the systemic traps and tropes in the process. Working from the inter- and intra-personal\, the artists plan to rant\, riff and tee hee through this tricky terrain of being Black in white spaces and living to tell the tale.

SUMMARY:The Holocaust\, Tikkun Olam\, And Three Generations Of Humanitarian Women
DESCRIPTION:Caryl Stern\, the renowned human rights activist\, is the third generation of women in her family whose lives were shaped by the Holocaust. Her grandmother\, Mignon Langnas\, was a nurse in Vienna when the Nazis invaded. Facing an agonizing decision\, she sent her two young children on a ship to the US\, opting to stay with her ailing parents and to take care of her patients in a Jewish children’s hospital\, navigating constant risk of deportation and death. Caryl’s mother\, Manuela Stern\, crossed the ocean at the age of six and once here\, lived in an orphanage on the lower East side of Manhattan. Manuela’s experience contributed to her becoming a passionate civic activist and educator. For these three women\, “tikkun olam” (Hebrew for\, “to heal the world”) is now part of their DNA. Join the Museum and The Olga Lengyel Institute for a fascinating conversation between Caryl and Manuela about the impact of the Holocaust on three generations of women. The program will be moderated by NBC’s senior legal and investigative correspondent Cynthia McFadden.

SUMMARY:The American Construction Industry: Its Historical Evolution and Potential Future
DESCRIPTION:Brian Bowen retired as president of Hanscomb Inc. in 2000\, after a long career in the construction industries of England\, Canada\, and the United States. In a second career as a Professor of Practice in the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, Bowen developed a course that became the basis of his important new book\, The American Construction Industry: Its Historical Evolution and Potential Future (Routledge\, 2021). As Thomas Leslie notes in the back-cover testimonial\, the volume adds an important perspective to standard architectural histories: “Relying on his background in the industry and using illuminating examples of contracts\, correspondence\, and other key documents across eras\, Bowen explains the combined effects of economics\, the law\, labor\, and professional organization\, among others\, in realizing both grand monuments and everyday dwellings.” The American Construction Industry\, he opines\, “is essential as a reference and enlightening as a narrative.”

SUMMARY:Ground Zero: Master Plans
DESCRIPTION:Two design competitions determined the direction of the master plan at Ground Zero and the concept and position of the 9/11 memorial and museum. Ultimately the memorial\, museum\, and landscaped plaza encompassed eight of the sixteen acres of the World Trade Center site. The very public and political process of creating the cultural institutions on that half of the site was the subject of an enlightening discussion on September 21\, 2021\, with Craig Dykers\, Gary Hack\, Lynne Sagalyn\, and Frank Sciame\, Jr. that can be viewed on video. Meanwhile\, on the other eight acres\, five skyscrapers that would replace the 10 million sq. ft. of office space in the destroyed World Trade Center moved forward\, with the key player being the private investor-developer\, Silverstein Properties. While the replacement for the collapsed 7 WTC rose quickly\, the other towers stalled. Today\, after many revisions in design and repositions of ownership\, three of the masterplan buildings are completed\, while Tower 2 has stump foundations and an indeterminate future. The problematic site on the southern edge of the memorial plaza for a mixed-use Tower 5 has recently been announced.

SUMMARY:Children’s Tree Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:In January 1943\, a Jewish teacher imprisoned in the Terezín (Theresienstadt) concentration camp planted a silver maple tree and nurtured it along with a group of Jewish children\, who used their precious water rations to help it grow. 78 years later\, join us as we dedicate a newly-planted descendant of that tree in front of the Museum. The dedication ceremony will feature keynote remarks from Linda Thomas-Greenfield\, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. The ceremony will also include remarks from Dr. Michael Berenbaum\, world-renowned historian and Director of the Sigi Ziering Institute at American Jewish University\, and music from the student choir at PS/IS 276: The Battery Park City School. Fred Terna and Rene Slotkin\, survivors of Terezín\, will water the newly-planted tree and share their reflections on the occasion. The tree bears the name “The Children’s Tree” in memory of the Jewish children in Terezín who first planted the tree\, and in honor of the students at PS/IS 276\, located across the street from the Museum\, who will become the tree’s caretakers for generations to come.

SUMMARY:DeFi and the Future of Finance
DESCRIPTION:Webinar. During the Global Financial Crisis in 2008\, our financial infrastructure failed. Governments bailed out the very institutions that let the economy down. This episode spurred a serious rethink of our financial system. Does it make any sense that it takes two days to settle a stock transaction? Why do retailers\, operating on razor thin margins\, have to pay 3% for every customer credit card swipe? Why does it take two days to transfer money from a bank account to a brokerage—or any other company? Why are savings rates miniscule or negative? Why is it so difficult for entrepreneurs to get financing at traditional banks?

SUMMARY:How Do We Celebrate? A Cultural History Of Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:Before the 1800s\, Hanukkah was a minor holiday to most Jews. However\, the status of the holiday began to change after the Civil War\, when Rabbi Max Lilienthal created Hanukkah events for children at his synagogue. Soon\, these types of events were adopted nationwide. In the twentieth century\, Jews began expanding the celebration of the holiday to compete with Christmas and reinforce their dedication to Judaism. Join the Museum for a program exploring the history of Hanukkah in the United States. The program will consist of a conversation between Jenna Joselit\, Professor of History at George Washington University\, and Marjorie Ingall\, columnist at Tablet magazine and author. The conversation will be moderated by Stephanie Butnick\, Deputy Editor of Tablet magazine and host of the podcast Unorthodox.

SUMMARY:Rumbula Remembered: 80 Years Since The Mass Executions
DESCRIPTION:On November 30 and December 8\, 1941\, approximately 26\,000 Jews were murdered in the Rumbula Forest outside Riga\, Latvia. Only three people who arrived at the Rumbula killing site survived the Holocaust. 80 years after the massacres\, join the Museum for a program revisiting the events at Rumbula and exploring their legacy. The program will feature work-in-progress clips from Rumbula’s Echo\, a forthcoming historical documentary film from director and producer Mitchell Lieber. The program will also feature a discussion between Lieber\, Lolita Tomsone\, Director of the Zana Lipke Memorial Museum and initiator of an annual Rumbula commemoration in central Riga\, and Ilya Lensky\, Director of the Jewish Museum of Latvia.

SUMMARY:9/11 and America's Standing in the World
DESCRIPTION:The events of 9/11 profoundly transformed how the United States engages with the rest of the world. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton was at the forefront of that transformation\, first as a senator from New York (2001-2009) and then as secretary of state (2009-2013) in the Obama administration. In this conversation with 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Executive Vice President and Deputy Director for Museum Programs Clifford Chanin\, Secretary Clinton reflects upon the attacks\, the power and limitations of diplomacy in the ensuing two decades\, and what the future might hold for American foreign policy.
