SUMMARY:The Imperial Examination System in China and the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes referred to as “the 5th invention of China”\, the civil service examination system in imperial China was designed to select candidates for the state bureaucracy. This system was in place between 650 CE and 1905\, making it the world’s longest-lasting meritocracy. In the course of over 1200 years\, the examination system helped shape China’s intellectual\, cultural\, political\, and religious life\, giving rise to a unique gentry class of scholar-bureaucrats. The Chinese civil examination system was adopted by a number of neighboring Asian countries\, such as Vietnam\, Korea and Japan\, in one form or another. To help understand this important institution in traditional China\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on May 22 by Ms. Feng Jiahong\, President of the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing\, on the history\, process and significance of the imperial examinations. The Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing was built on the former site of the largest imperial examination center in China. The rare archives\, records\, actual examination papers as well as the breathtaking architecture of the museum will also be introduced in the lecture.

SUMMARY:Unpacking “The Archive Thief”
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Holocaust\, Jewish historian Zosa Szajkowski gathered up tens of thousands of documents from Nazi buildings in Berlin\, and later\, public archives and private synagogues in France\, and moved them all\, illicitly\, to New York. SUMMARY:“X Troop” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:In June 1942\, Winston Churchill and his chief of staff devised an unusual plan: a new commando unit made up of Jewish refugees in the United Kingdom. Called “X Troop\,” the unit included a motley group of intellectuals\, artists\, and athletes from Germany and Austria. Many had lost their families and homes\, and would stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis. The top-secret unit is the subject of Dr. Leah Garrett’s new book X Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War II\, scheduled for release on May 25\, 2021. Drawing on extensive original research\, including interviews with the last surviving members\, Garrett follows this unique band of brothers from Germany to England and back again\, with stops at British internment camps\, the beaches of Normandy\, the battlefields of Italy and Holland\, and the hellscape of Terezin concentration camp—the scene of one of the most dramatic\, untold rescues of the war. Join the Museum for a book launch program with Garrett. She’ll be in conversation with Kim Masters\, veteran entertainment journalist\, editor-at-large of The Hollywood Reporter\, and host of KCRW’s The Business whose father Peter Masters was a member of the X Troop.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Henry And Bernard Schanzer
DESCRIPTION:Twin brothers Henry and Bernard Schanzer were born in Belgium in 1935. When the Nazis invaded Belgium in 1940\, the Schanzer family escaped to Saint-Étienne in the south of France\, which shortly fell under Vichy rule. After living openly as Jews in Saint-Étienne for almost two years\, the seven-year-old brothers went into hiding in 1942 on a farm in Saint-Pal-de-Mons. With the assistance of several righteous Catholics—including a local dressmaker and a Count and Countess who were part of the French resistance—the brothers\, their sister\, and their mother survived until the end of the war. Their father\, who wasn’t able to hide with his family in the countryside\, was sent to Auschwitz. After emigrating to the United States in 1946\, Henry Schanzer became an attorney and Bernard Schanzer became a doctor.

DESCRIPTION:Follow the return of six Navajo Code Talkers to the five Pacific Island sites where their unbreakable secret code\, based on the unwritten Navajo language\, helped U.S. forces overcome Japanese expansion in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The code was never broken. The highly personal reflections of the Navajo Code Talkers dominate the film’s storyline where they share personal accounts\, memories and insights into their war experience. Interviews were conducted on Guam\, Saipan\, Tinian\, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and USMC Camp Pendleton\, north of San Diego\, where they trained\, learned and enhanced the original code.

SUMMARY:Antiquity in Gotham: The Ancient Architecture of New York City
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In her new book\, Prof. Elizabeth Macaulay-Lewis applies an archeological lens to the study of the New York buildings. Antiquity in Gotham explores how the language of ancient architecture communicated the political ideals of the young Republic through the adaptation of Greek and Roman architecture; how Egyptian temples conveyed the city’s new technological achievements; and how the ancient Near East served many artistic masters\, decorating the interiors of glitzy Gilded Age restaurants and the tops of skyscrapers. Rather than emphasizing a battle of styles\, the Neo-Antique framework considers the similarities and differences—intellectually\, conceptually\, and chronologically—amongst the reception of these architectural traditions.

SUMMARY:Lower Forever or Set for a Regime Break? Lessons from Real Interest Rates Since the 14th Century
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schmelzing will discuss his groundbreaking research on real interest rate dynamics since the beginning of secondary debt markets\, the topic of one of his PhD chapters. On the basis of visiting US and European archives over multiple years\, he reconstructed global real interest rate series that cover 82% of advanced economy GDP over 700 years\, and he argues that our current negative rate environment has actually been in the making for centuries. Mr. Schmelzing will explain why investors during the Italian Renaissance could already have predicted that the global economy would hit the “zero lower bound” in our time\, why there is no such thing as a “normal” or “steady state” interest rate – and what the chances are that the major recent fiscal and monetary stimuli will now trigger a structural break from the low inflation\, low rate era. Following Mr. Schmelzing’s presentation\, James Grant and Richard Sylla will lead a discussion on the history of interest rates and will take questions from the audience.

SUMMARY:“Horse Crazy” And The Holocaust With Sarah Maslin Nir
DESCRIPTION:As a New York Times staff reporter for the last decade\, Sarah Maslin Nir has seen a lot. She covered the escape of two inmates from the Clinton Correctional Facility; camped out overnight at Zuccotti Park with Occupy Wall Street protesters; attended 25 parties over five days; and conducted a sweeping investigation into New York City’s nail salon industry\, for which she was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist. Maslin Nir’s latest project is Horse Crazy: The Story of a Woman and a World in Love with an Animal\, a new book that traces her lifelong obsession with horses and provides a window into the lesser-known corners of the equestrian world. Throughout her career\, Maslin Nir has carried the stories of her family with her—including her father\, Yehuda Nir\, who survived the Holocaust in Poland and became a prominent psychiatrist who specialized in treating trauma among New York City’s Hasidic Jews. Join the Museum for a program exploring Maslin Nir’s family background\, fascinating career\, and identity as the descendant of Holocaust survivors. She’ll be interviewed by Stephanie Butnick\, Tablet Magazine Deputy Editor and co-host of the leading Jewish podcast “Unorthodox.”

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Ivan Vamos
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Vamos was born in March 1938 in Budapest\, Hungary\, nearly the same day that German troops marched into neighboring Austria. After Ivan’s father was killed and his grandfather was badly beaten\, his mother\, who was a professional photographer\, arranged false papers for Ivan and herself and took him into hiding in the Hungarian countryside. A year later\, she and Ivan walked back to Budapest and found refuge in a crowded apartment—a “protected house” like those established by Raoul Wallenberg. When German forces occupied Hungary\, Ivan and his mother escaped once again—this time to a bombed-out apartment house in Budapest\, where they hid in smoldering ruins until liberation in 1945. After emigrating to the United States in 1947\, Ivan led a successful career in public service\, including serving as Deputy Commissioner for Planning and Development at the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation\, and Historic Preservation. In this Stories Survive program\, Ivan will share his remarkable story of surviving the Holocaust in Hungary and the lessons he takes from this dark chapter of his childhood.
