SUMMARY:Annual Great Crashes Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Relive the Great Crash of 1929 on the Museum’s annual crash-themed walking tour of Lower Manhattan. This unique walking tour\, now in its 34th year\, is the only regularly-scheduled event that commemorates the Great Crash of 1929\, the Panic of 1907 and the 1987 stock market collapse. It also delves into the political\, financial\, real estate and architectural history of Wall Street and New York City. The tour shows that despite such adversities as the Great Fires of 1776 and 1835\, financial panics of the 19th century\, the 1920 Wall Street explosion\, the Crash of 1929\, the stock market collapse of 1987\, the September 11\, 2001 terrorist attack and the financial crisis of 2008\, New York and Wall Street have always recovered their position as the world’s financial capital.

SUMMARY:The Barbizon: The Hotel that Set Women Free

SUMMARY:Expectations Investing: Reading Stock Prices for Better Returns
DESCRIPTION:Webinar with Michael Mauboussin. Most investment books try to assess the attractiveness of a stock price by estimating the value of the company. Expectations Investing\, by Michael Mauboussin and Alfred Rappaport\, provides a powerful and insightful alternative to identifying gaps between price and value. The authors suggest that an investor start with a known quantity\, the stock price\, and ask what it implies for future financial results. After showing how to read expectations\, they provide a guide to rigorous strategic and financial analysis to help investors assess the likelihood of revisions to these expectations. Investors who read this book will be able to evaluate stocks of companies in any sector or geography more effectively than those who use the standard approaches of most investors.

SUMMARY:Leonard Bernstein And The Israel Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:Online or in person. Leonard Bernstein was one of the most celebrated Jewish musicians of all time. Join the Museum and the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for a program exploring Bernstein’s remarkable legacy in Israel. Bernstein’s musical career in Israel began in 1947\, when he first conducted a symphony in Tel Aviv for the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. The next year\, he conducted an open-air concert for Israeli troops in the middle of the desert during Israel’s War of Independence\, within earshot of retreating Egyptian forces. Over the next several decades\, he went on to conduct and perform in dozens of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s concerts\, including leading their first American tour. This program will feature a screening of Leonard Bernstein and the Israel Philharmonic\, a new short film that includes interviews\, archival images\, and special video footage\, and is hosted by playwright\, actor\, and pianist Hershey Felder. After the film concludes\, the program will feature a panel discussion between Bernstein’s son Alex Bernstein; Danielle Ames Spivak\, Executive Vice President and CEO of American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic; and Ivy Weingram\, curator of the exhibition Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Life Of Herschel Grynszpan
DESCRIPTION:Online program. In November 1938\, Herschel Grynszpan\, a Jewish refugee living in Paris\, walked into his city’s German Embassy and assassinated Nazi diplomat Ernst vom Rath. Grynszpan was just seventeen years old. His actions would later be used as justification for Kristallnacht\, the violent antisemitic pogrom which took place on November 9 and 10\, 1938. Now\, eighty-two years later\, Herschel Grynszpan has largely faded into history. Join the Museum for a program exploring Grynszpan’s story\, how it came to be used as propaganda\, and why it was ultimately forgotten. The program will include a discussion between Jonathan Kirsch\, author of The Short\, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan: A Boy Avenger\, a Nazi Diplomat and a Murder in Paris\, and Alan E. SUMMARY:American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincey Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Nina Sankovitch will present the intimate connections between leading families of the American Revolution—the Hancock\, Quincy\, and Adams families—and explore the role played by such figures as John Hancock\, John Adams and Abigail Smith (Adams)\, Josiah Quincy Junior and Dorothy Quincy (Hancock) in sparking the flames of dissent and rebellion that would lead to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. By focusing in on Braintree\, Massachusetts and these three prominent families of the village\, Sankovitch will demonstrate how the desire for independence cut across class lines\, binding people together as they pursued commonly held goals of opportunity\, liberty\, and stability. SUMMARY:POP: Then until Now: Vicki Angel\, Eric Barsness\, & Carol Clements in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Then Until Now offers a look at a forty-year choreographic span\, with past and present juxtaposed in the bodies of three “mature” dancers. About the artists: Angel\, Barsness\, and Clements resurrect solos from the 1980s and make new dances\, too. A surprise comic trio is the finale. Vicki Angel\, Eric Barsness\, and Carol Clements share a background in the 1980s downtown Manhattan dance scene\, at the juncture of avant-garde\, postmodern dance and the theatrical experimentation of performance art. Their works were produced by leading venues of the day such as Dance Theater Workshop\, The Kitchen\, Danspace\, LaMama\, and PS122\, as well as by grittier hotspots such as 8BC and a host of downtown loft spaces. The three choreographers join forces 40 years later to present Then until Now at Gibney. There they will juxtapose old and new work\, the physicality and creativity of past alongside the present—and feature the performance of both\, in the now.

SUMMARY:St. Eustatius and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Fraunces Tavern Museum and Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society. In 1776\, the US vessel Andrew Doria sailed to the Dutch island of Sint Eustatius carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Upon its arrival\, the island’s governor provided a formal cannon salute to the ship’s patriot flag\, marking the first acknowledgement of the United States’ sovereignty. In this presentation\, Sergio Villavicencio\, Vice President of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society and Chair of the NYC Semiquincentennial Committee\, will delve into the early relationship between the United States and Sint Eustatius\, which critically supplied the patriots’ cause by smuggling the necessary goods to keep the American Revolution going\, and how the island’s fate years later decisively affected the end of the Revolutionary War. This lecture will take place via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Gibney Deeper Duet: Talvin Wilks + Melanie George
DESCRIPTION:Permission\, appropriation or trespassing – the tricky terrain of 2 Black Dramaturgs in the current “We See You” performance landscape told through personal case studies\, observations\, rants\, riffs and realizations. Melanie George and Talvin Wilks\, friends\, colleagues\, and confidantes\, will talk their way through the current cultural moment from their vantage points as Dramaturgs While Black (DWB). Utilizing\, purposefully\, a Black lens to view the American Theatre and Dance industries\, the conversation seeks to navigate the concept of appropriation vs. elucidation in the choices that many BIPOC dramaturgs have made and continue to have to make in this era of reckoning\, solidarity and wokeness. In it they question and challenge their own responsibility and accountability to Black artists and address some of the systemic traps and tropes in the process. Working from the inter- and intra-personal\, the artists plan to rant\, riff and tee hee through this tricky terrain of being Black in white spaces and living to tell the tale.
