SUMMARY:John Wasik on "Lincolnomics: Why the 16th President's Vision for Economic Progress Still Rocks"
DESCRIPTION:Webinar. Has there ever been a time when Abraham Lincoln has gone silent? Our immortal conscience on civil rights and individual freedom is speaking to us yet again in the time of COVID and public unrest. Yet Lincoln has managed to become even more relevant as we tackle infrastructure\, healthcare\, climate change and human rights. The forthcoming book by John Wasik\, Lincolnomics: How President Lincoln Constructed the Great American Economy\, puts the 16th President in a powerful new light: He was our foremost architect of economic development\, equal treatment and physical and intellectual improvements\, from transportation to medical research. In this presentation\, Wasik will show a vastly under-studied side of Lincoln. As the only President to hold a patent\, he was an innovator. During his brief time as a surveyor\, he was an urban planner. Surprisingly\, his longest and most comprehensive speeches were devoted to the culture of invention\, “internal improvements” and research and development.

SUMMARY:Painting The Holocaust: Remembering Alfred Kantor And His Sketchbook
DESCRIPTION:In December 1941\, Alfred Kantor arrived at the Terezin Ghetto. An 18 year old artist from Prague with one year of study at the Rotter School of Advertising Art under his belt\, Kantor began to draw scenes around him. “My commitment to drawing came out of a deep instinct of self-preservation\,” he later wrote\, “and undoubtedly helped me to deny the unimaginable horrors of that time.” Kantor continued drawing and painting at night after he was deported to Auschwitz and to Schwarzheide\, and then again after the war in the Deggendorf Displaced Persons Camp. The hundreds of sketches and watercolors he produced between 1941 and 1947 constitute one of the most prolific artistic records of the Holocaust. This is a celebration of Kantor’s remarkable life and legacy\, featuring his daughter Monica Churchill; Zuzana Justman\, a filmmaker and writer who interviewed Kantor for her film Terezin Diary; and Dr. Ori Z. Soltes\, Professor of the Teaching of Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University and former Director the B’nai B’rith Klutznick National Jewish Museum with a specialty in art and the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:Chengdu Greenland: A Non-Coplanar Exoskeleton
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. Supertall projects have been central to Dennis Poon’s career as a structural engineer. Poon worked on the teams for the Petronas Towers (1998) in Kuala Lumpur and Taipei 101 (2004) in Taiwan\, the first skyscrapers outside of the United States to become\, in succession\, the world’s tallest buildings. Dennis has extensive experience in seismic design\, structural investigations\, and optimization of structural systems\, and he has worked with conservative Chinese authorities to accept design criteria that reflect international standards and thus allow for more efficient structures. Dennis’s talk will focus on the innovative structural system of the Chengdu Greenland Tower.

SUMMARY:Hidden Meanings and Beyond in Chinese Painting
DESCRIPTION:What does a Chinese artist do in a time of chaos and oppression? Flee to the mountains\, to the wilderness\, of course\, to cultivate upright Confucian values\, write poetry\, paint paintings\, and\, naturally\, drink some tea and lots of wine. And in the paintings\, he might hide some delicately rendered political commentary. But Arnold Chang\, America’s modern master in Chinese painting whose paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco\, and many others\, is more interested in the art than the politics. In a very special personal and scholarly talk\, Chang will share his insights into the meaning and artistry of Chinese painting\, from ancient times to today\, and then join a conversation with Chinese art expert Jane DeBevoise\, Co-Chair of Asia Art Archive.

SUMMARY:Pieces of China: Wendy Paulson on the Spoon-billed Sandpiper
DESCRIPTION:Less than two months after hatching\, the tiny Spoon-billed Sandpiper begins the long journey from Russia’s arctic tundra to the coast of China. No guide\, no map\, no GPS. But the baby birds instinctively know exactly where to go: to the mudflats of Jiangsu province. Unfortunately\, industry and reclamation threaten the birds’ habitats. Spoon-billed Sandpipers are one of the most threatened species in the world\, with fewer than 100 remaining. Join us as Wendy Paulson\, conservationist\, birder\, teacher\, shares her encounters with this fascinating bird and how a growing environmental movement in China might ensure its future.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Manfred Ohrenstein
DESCRIPTION:Manfred Ohrenstein was born in Mannheim\, Germany in 1925. He grew up under increasingly restrictive Nazi rules\, holding his Bar Mitzvah at age 13 on the precipice of the Holocaust. In November 1938\, less than a week before Kristallnacht\, Ohrenstein and his family escaped Germany\, made their way to London\, and then found refuge in New York City. Ohrenstein attended high school\, college\, and law school in his new home\, shedding his German accent along the way and practicing public speaking as a soapbox orator on behalf of Zionism. Ohrenstein became a prominent civic leader in New York\, representing Manhattan from 1961 to 1994 in the New York State Senate and serving as the Minority Leader of the State Senate for more than half of his tenure. He co-founded the Museum in the 1980s and still serves as a Vice Chairman of its Board of Trustees. Join Ohrenstein and Jack Kliger\, Museum President & CEO\, for this Stories Survive program exploring Ohrenstein’s story of escape and leadership.

SUMMARY:Exploring Neuroscience And The Legacy Of The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscientist Dr. Daniela Schiller\, who leads the Affective Neuroscience Lab at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine\, has spent years exploring “reconsolidation” — the biological process of rewriting painful memories. Her groundbreaking work is shaped by her personal experiences with her elderly father in Israel\, who remains haunted by the Holocaust decades after he survived it. Filmmaker Liron Unreich has spent years exploring multigenerational trauma through a different lens. Like Schiller\, his work is a personal mission informed by his own grandfather’s legacy as a Holocaust survivor. The two of them have joined forces with producer Roy Wol to create the upcoming feature-length documentary The Ripple Project ONE\, which profiles five creative individuals working through the enduring trauma of the Holocaust. Join Schiller\, Unreich\, and Wol for a discussion exploring Schiller’s personal story\, the journeys behind the film\, and the dynamic nature of traumatic emotional memories.

SUMMARY:Valcour: The 1776 Campaign That Saved the Cause of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:During the summer of 1776\, patriots worked frantically to head off a British invasion from Canada. Their effort culminated in a wild three-day naval battle on Lake Champlain in northern New York. In this lecture\, Jack Kelly will argue that\, although the campaign has often been neglected by historians\, its success was an important impetus to Washington’s decision to cross the Delaware and attack Trenton. This lecture will take place via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen: Featuring Guest Sculptor Vinnie Bagwell
DESCRIPTION:Person Place Thing is an interview show based on this idea: people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person\, one place\, and one thing that are important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great speakers. Host Randy Cohen will be interviewing sculptor Vinnie Bagwell. Vinnie Bagwell began sculpting in 1993. Currently\, Bagwell is leading the conception and development of “The Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden”–an urban-heritage public-art project for the City of Yonkers\, New York\, to commemorate the legacy of the first enslaved Africans to be manumitted by law in the United States\, 64 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

DESCRIPTION:In 2009\, Dr. Wendy Lower\, the acclaimed author of Hitler’s Furies and chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Academic Council\, was shown a photograph just brought to the Museum. The image—a rare “action shot” documenting the horrific final moment of a family’s murder—drove her to conduct years of forensic and archival detective work in Ukraine\, Germany\, Slovakia\, Israel\, and the United States\, recovering new layers of detail about the Nazis’ open-air massacres in eastern Europe and the role of the family unit in Nazi ideology. In her new book The Ravine: A Family\, a Photograph\, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed\, Lower explores the exceptional image and the new understandings it has unlocked about the Holocaust. Join Lower for a discussion about the book and her research with Paul Salmons\, a Holocaust education specialist\, curator of Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away\, chief curator of Seeing Auschwitz\, and consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

SUMMARY:The Primacy of Petronas Towers: Supertalls Go Global
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In 1998 the twin Petronas Towers in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur took the title of “world’s tallest building” away from the United States for the first time. The towers’ developers\, private investors working with the Malaysian government and Petronas\, the national oil company\, sought to create a headquarters and a landmark that would establish KL’s prominence as a commercial and cultural capital. In the design of American architects Cesar Pelli and Fred Clarke\, they found a winning scheme\, paired towers of slender proportions and scalloped spires that suggest both Islamic geometries and temple forms. Like the towers that would proliferate in Asia and the Middle East in the next decade\, Petronas was constructed of high-strength concrete\, supported by massive core and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns. In both structural engineering and iconic imagery\, Petronas pointed the way to the supertalls of the 21st-century.

SUMMARY:New Beginnings: Jewish Refugees After The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:At the conclusion of World War II\, there were millions of refugees in Europe\, including many Holocaust survivors who refused to go home or had no homes to return to. These survivors experienced struggles and successes as they sought to rebuild their lives in the shadow of the Holocaust\, often in Displaced Persons (DP) camps. Tens of thousands emigrated to the United States between 1947 and 1953 and many more found their way to Israel. Join the Museum for a program exploring the stories of these survivors and the lives they lived in the years immediately after the war. The program will feature David Nasaw\, historian and author of The Last Million: Europe’s Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War; Esther Safran Foer\, author of I Want You To Know We’re Still Here: A Post-Holocaust Memoir\, which includes the story of her family’s years in a DP Camp in Germany; and Joseph Berger\, longtime New York Times reporter and editor who authored an account of his own family’s experiences titled Displaced Persons: Growing Up American After the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:Fourteenth Colony: The Forgotten Story of the Gulf South During America's Revolutionary Era
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, historian Mike Bunn offers the first comprehensive history of the British colony of West Florida. For a host of reasons\, including the fact that West Florida did not rebel against the British government\, the colony has long been dismissed as a loyal but inconsequential fringe outpost\, if considered at all. But the colony’s history showcases a tumultuous political scene featuring a halting attempt at instituting representative government; a host of bold and colorful characters; a compelling saga of struggle and perseverance in the pursuit of financial stability; and a dramatic series of battles on land and water which brought about the end of its days under the Union Jack.
