SUMMARY:25 Years Later: The 1998 US Embassy Bombings and the FBI
DESCRIPTION:On August 7\, 1998\, truck bombs exploded at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania\, killing 224 people and injuring more than 4\,000. The FBI’s investigations of the attacks\, codenamed KENBOM and TANBOM\, were at that time the largest deployment in Bureau history. To mark the 25th anniversary of the bombings\, retired FBI Special Agent in Charge Mary E. Galligan who responded on the ground to the Tanzania bombing\, is joined by retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent John Liguori who was a supervisor of the FBI squad that oversaw the trial. Together\, in conversation with Museum Director\, Clifford Chanin\, they reflect on both investigations and discuss how the attacks impacted counterterrorism efforts in the years leading up to 9/11.

SUMMARY:Sephardic Stories with Elizabeth Graver\, Michael Frank\, Maira Kalman\, and Shoshana Bean
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Graver and Michael Frank come together for a special conversation about two books that capture the stories of two shapeshifting Sephardic women who lived many lives over many decades. Graver’s novel Kantika (“song” in Ladino) draws a fictionalized portrait of her grandmother Rebecca Cohen\, daughter of the Sephardic elite of early twentieth-century Istanbul\, whose journey took her to Cuba\, Spain\, and New York. Michael Frank’s One Hundred Saturdays: Stella Levi and the Search for a Lost World depicts Frank’s six-year-long encounter with Stella Levi\, who was born and came of age in the Juderia of Rhodes\, Greece. Levi was deported to Auschwitz\, along with the rest of her community\, in July of 1944. Both Rebecca and Stella—fierce\, creative\, and vibrant—came to create new lives for themselves in America. Maira Kalman\, who illustrated One Hundred Saturdays\, will join in the conversation. The evening will also include a performance of Sephardic music by singer Shoshana Bean.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Borough: Staten Island and the Subway
DESCRIPTION:Is transportation destiny? In The Forgotten Borough: Staten Island and the Subway\, historian Kenneth M. Gold argues that the borough’s lack of a subway connection is at the heart of its social\, political\, and historical identity. In his new book\, Gold\, who is also a co-editor of Discovering Staten Island: A 350th Anniversary Commemorative History\, tracks the multiple failed attempts to bring mass transit and transportation infrastructure to Staten Island in the century before the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge changed the borough’s relationship to Greater New York in 1964.

SUMMARY:In the Garden of the Righteous
DESCRIPTION:In his stirring book In the Garden of the Righteous: The Heroes Who Risked Their Lives to Save Jews During the Holocaust\, Richard Hurowitz pays tribute to ten individuals who risked their lives\, liberties\, and careers to help their neighbors\, and often complete strangers\, to survive. Featured in the book are those recognized by Yad Vashem in Israel\, notably the story of Georg Duckwitz\, a German diplomat in occupied Denmark who alerted the Danes to the intended date of the Jewish deportation and helped arrange their safe passage to Sweden. Other incredible profiles include Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes; Italian cycling champion Gino Bartali; Polish social worker Irena Sendler; Japanese spy Chinue Sugihara; and H.A. and Margarite Rey\, the co-creators of Curious George. Richard Hurowitz is joined in conversation by Margaret Hoover\, host of PBS’ “Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.” They will discuss how these stories are a timely reminder of the dangers of extremism\, as well as of the persistence of decency and humanity in treacherous times. A book signing will follow\, with books available for purchase.

SUMMARY:The AT&T Building: Philip Johnson and The Postmodern Skyscraper
DESCRIPTION:The unveiling of the design for the new headquarters for AT&T\, then the largest company in the world\, appeared on the front page of The New York Times on March 31\, 1978 and was quickly dubbed “the first Postmodern skyscraper.” The tower’s architect was Philip Johnson\, who had championed the minimalist and functionalist aesthetics of the European avant garde as a curator at MoMA in the 1930s and had collaborated with Mies van der Rohe on the Seagram Building in the 1950s. With its granite-not-glass façade and split-pediment “Chippendale” roofline\, Johnson’s AT&T overturned – or at least undermined for a decade – the aesthetics of Modernism he had helped establish as orthodoxy.
