SUMMARY:Path to Liberty: The Emergence of a Nation
DESCRIPTION:Opening day of a new exhibition. Fraunces Tavern was a witness to history throughout the Revolutionary War Era. Among the many historic events that took place there\, Fraunces Tavern served as a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty\, a site for trials that were part of a process that led to the emancipation of thousands of Black Loyalists\, and the setting for Washington’s farewell to his officers. Two hundred fifty years later\, Fraunces Tavern Museum will honor this history with a new special exhibition: Path to Liberty: The Emergence of a Nation. Commemorating the United States Semiquincentennial\, Path to Liberty will be a chronological\, multi-year exhibition telling the history of the American Revolution from 1775 to 1783\, with a distinctive focus on what occurred in New York State and the surrounding areas.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of Yom HaShoah\, Central Synagogue and the Museum of Jewish Heritage are proud to present a New York screening of The Last Musician of Auschwitz\, a new documentary from the BBC\, in collaboration with the Museum of Jewish Heritage – a Living Memorial to the Holocaust. The compelling documentary\, from director Toby Trackman\, explores the legacy of music at Auschwitz\, told through testimonies of survivors and victims who were forced to create and play music while they were in the concentration camp. Honoring their contributions by including new interpretations of the music created there\, the film also pays tribute to the horrors\, loss\, and dehumanization experienced at Auschwitz and honors the lives of the dwindling number of survivors left to share their stories.

SUMMARY:Community Resilience: Recovery in NYC’s Chinatown After 9/11
DESCRIPTION:Just ten blocks from the World Trade Center\, Chinatown was the largest residential area affected by 9/11. Much of the impact was strikingly visible as the collapse of the Twin Towers filled the neighborhood with heavy smoke\, dust\, and debris. The aftermath of the attacks challenged the community as tourism declined\, businesses closed\, and health concerns amongst residents rose. It would also\, however\, spur people to action\, cast light on the neighborhood’s needs\, and prove its resilience. To better understand the consequences of 9/11 on Chinatown\, Senior Curator of Oral History & Vice President of Collections Amy Weinstein is joined by Professor of Sociology at Hunter College Margaret Chin\, writer and educator Annie Tan\, and retired FDNY Lieutenant Jacob Chin. Together they reflect on their own experiences in Chinatown during and after the attacks and discuss how the neighborhood was forever shaped by this tragedy.

SUMMARY:The Seas
DESCRIPTION:20th anniversary celebration of the book The Seas. Following a teenage girl who believes she’s a mermaid\, The Seas “blurred the lines between reality and fairy tale\, hope and delusion\, sanity and madness” and predated our contemporary wave of surreal fiction by writers like Melissa Broder\, Marie Helene Bertino\, Yasmin Zaher\, and Ottessa Moshfegh. In a conversation moderated by Belletrist’s Karah Preiss\, author Samantha Hunt and Alexandra Auder will discuss the novel’s core love story and flexible definition of reality\, but also: mermaids\, girlhood\, identity\, and slimy things.

SUMMARY:Golden Thread Ensemble: Yiddish Songs of Social Change
DESCRIPTION:Golden Thread Ensemble presents Yiddish Songs of Social Change\, a program that explores the nature and dynamics of social change in the 20th century\, featuring new arrangements for string quintet by Craig Judelman. Covering a wide array of topics including shifting opportunities for women\, the struggle for workers’ rights\, tensions between religious and secular movements\, assimilation and relationship with the outside world\, this program gives context and voice to the myriad changes and social struggles faced by Ashkenazi communities of the last century. The ensemble itself reflects this evolving identity as it straddles the line between traditional klezmer kapelye and contemporary art ensemble.
