DESCRIPTION:Opening preview reception\, lecture\, and optional dinner for upcoming special exhibition\, Lafayette: A Hero’s Return\, opening to the public on June 25. Marquis de Lafayette\, a young\, wealthy French aristocrat\, volunteered for and later led the Continental Army to victory with General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Before his death in 1834\, Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824 as the last living general from the War. His visit not only helped President James Monroe celebrate the nation’s 50th anniversary\, but also reignite its patriotism. He was welcomed with great fondness and fanfare by Americans in each of the then 24 states he visited over 13 months\, especially in New York.

When famine strikes\, the villagers blame the queer couple\, and Awino is sent away to be ‘circumcised’ by force. Will Awino and Bobby have to separate for the good of their community? Or will the village be forced to reckon with change?

For this presentation Anne Enslow plays the hammered dulcimer\, an instrument documented to have been in the American Colonies and Ridley Enslow plays the violin\, in this case a violin made in 1776. They both sing and appear in Colonial American costumes. Before each song Anne will provide interesting and entertaining introduction to the piece\, setting the context in American history.

DESCRIPTION:Andrew Waugh is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects\, a British firm established in 1997 alongside Anthony Thistleton. In 2009\, they completed Murray Grove\, the world’s first nine-story mass timber building\, located in London. As a pioneer and advocate for sustainable\, engineered wood in architecture\, Waugh has dedicated his practice to developing efficient\, aesthetically pleasing\, and ambitious architectural solutions that minimize resource use. Following Waugh’s presentation\, he will engage in a conversation with Andrew Bernheimer\, an architect and educator at Parsons School of Design. In 2015\, Bernheimer edited “Timber in the City” (ORO). They will reflect on the early history of Mass Timber in North America as it learned from Europe and discuss where we stand today.
