Our live-stream tour begins on the historic city island\, tracing the community’s path to the vibrant Marais district. Delve into the heart of “the Pletzl\,” the Yiddish neighborhood that became home to Eastern European Jews fleeing late 19th-century pogroms. As we explore\, we’ll confront the somber history of the Nazi occupation in 1940 and the tragic deportations of 1942\, paying our respects at the Shoah Memorial. Our journey continues to the historic synagogue on Rue des Pavées\, offering insight into centuries of religious life. Finally\, we’ll conclude our tour on the bustling Rue des Rosiers\, where you’ll discover the vibrant pulse of contemporary Jewish culture in Paris.

SUMMARY:Beyond “Lost” Cities: Archaeology’s Digital Revolution and the Promises and Challenges of AI
DESCRIPTION:Using remote sensing data\, including LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and high-resolution satellite imagery\, archaeologists are working across scales and mapping sites at levels of detail that once seemed impossible. In parallel\, deep learning models are transforming our ability to analyze the resulting large-scale datasets. However\, these new developments also present practical and ethical challenges. In this talk\, Dr. VanValkenburgh will draw on his own multi-faceted research projects in Peru to discuss how digital approaches are expanding archaeology’s reach and scientific impact\, while also changing the way that the field works with stakeholders and publics.

SUMMARY:Passwords: Richard Hell and Janaka Stucky on Bill Knott
DESCRIPTION:Poets House is excited to relaunch one of our most beloved series\, Passwords\, which invites poets to reflect on the work and impact of other poets. Richard Hell and Janaka Stucky will read from a new edition of Bill Knott‘s landmark first book\, The Naomi Poems: Corpse and Beans (Black Ocean\, 2024)\, published by Stucky and for which Hell wrote the foreword. Back in publication for the first time in almost sixty years\, the romantic\, antiwar\, and transgressive modes of The Naomi Poems illustrate Knott’s trailblazing punk poetics. Hell and Stucky will offer an audience Q&A\, sign copies of the new edition\, and discuss Knott’s lasting influence on their work.
