SUMMARY:Community Resilience: Recovery in NYC’s Chinatown After 9/11
DESCRIPTION:Just ten blocks from the World Trade Center\, Chinatown was the largest residential area affected by 9/11. Much of the impact was strikingly visible as the collapse of the Twin Towers filled the neighborhood with heavy smoke\, dust\, and debris. The aftermath of the attacks challenged the community as tourism declined\, businesses closed\, and health concerns amongst residents rose. It would also\, however\, spur people to action\, cast light on the neighborhood’s needs\, and prove its resilience. To better understand the consequences of 9/11 on Chinatown\, Senior Curator of Oral History & Vice President of Collections Amy Weinstein is joined by Professor of Sociology at Hunter College Margaret Chin\, writer and educator Annie Tan\, and retired FDNY Lieutenant Jacob Chin. Together they reflect on their own experiences in Chinatown during and after the attacks and discuss how the neighborhood was forever shaped by this tragedy.

You’ll get to see how the designers at Bowne lock up limited edition designs that showcase some of the more eccentric parts from the Seaport Museum’s printing and graphic arts collection. The Bowne & Co. that you can experience today at the Seaport Museum is an offshoot of the original and continues the age-old tradition of job (or small batch) printing.

SUMMARY:The Seas
DESCRIPTION:20th anniversary celebration of the book The Seas. Following a teenage girl who believes she’s a mermaid\, The Seas “blurred the lines between reality and fairy tale\, hope and delusion\, sanity and madness” and predated our contemporary wave of surreal fiction by writers like Melissa Broder\, Marie Helene Bertino\, Yasmin Zaher\, and Ottessa Moshfegh. In a conversation moderated by Belletrist’s Karah Preiss\, author Samantha Hunt and Alexandra Auder will discuss the novel’s core love story and flexible definition of reality\, but also: mermaids\, girlhood\, identity\, and slimy things.

SUMMARY:Golden Thread Ensemble: Yiddish Songs of Social Change
DESCRIPTION:Golden Thread Ensemble presents Yiddish Songs of Social Change\, a program that explores the nature and dynamics of social change in the 20th century\, featuring new arrangements for string quintet by Craig Judelman. Covering a wide array of topics including shifting opportunities for women\, the struggle for workers’ rights\, tensions between religious and secular movements\, assimilation and relationship with the outside world\, this program gives context and voice to the myriad changes and social struggles faced by Ashkenazi communities of the last century. The ensemble itself reflects this evolving identity as it straddles the line between traditional klezmer kapelye and contemporary art ensemble.

SUMMARY:Passwords: Rigoberto González on Leo Romero
DESCRIPTION:Join poet and educator Rigoberto González for a talk on the foundational yet overlooked Chicano poet Leo Romero\, whose new and selected volume Trees Dream of Water (University of Arizona Press) was published earlier this year. Romero’s subject matter is varied\, but it continually returns to one place: the natural landscape of the American Southwest. Among Chicano writers\, his attention to nature is unique because for him the environment is also a cultural experience\, whether it’s the rural Mexican communities of his childhood\, or the breathtaking beauty of the high desert he currently calls home. González will read and discuss a selection of Romero’s work\, bringing renewed appreciation for this poet who reminds us to look beyond the city limits to find that inner peace we’re all searching for.
