SUMMARY:The Question of Unworthy Life
DESCRIPTION:Between 1939 and 1945\, Nazi genocide claimed the lives of nearly three hundred thousand people diagnosed with psychiatric illness or cognitive deficiencies. Not until the 1980s would these murders\, as well as the coercive sterilizations of some four hundred thousand others classified as “feeble-minded\,” be officially acknowledged as crimes at all. Dagmar Herzog’s new book The Question of Unworthy Life charts this history from its origins in prewar debates about the value of disabled lives to our continuing efforts to unlearn eugenic thinking today.

Our live-stream tour begins on the historic city island\, tracing the community’s path to the vibrant Marais district. Our journey continues to the historic synagogue on Rue des Pavées\, offering insight into centuries of religious life. Finally\, we’ll conclude our tour on the bustling Rue des Rosiers\, where you’ll discover the vibrant pulse of contemporary Jewish culture in Paris.

SUMMARY:Beyond “Lost” Cities: Archaeology’s Digital Revolution and the Promises and Challenges of AI
DESCRIPTION:Using remote sensing data\, including LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and high-resolution satellite imagery\, archaeologists are working across scales and mapping sites at levels of detail that once seemed impossible. In parallel\, deep learning models are transforming our ability to analyze the resulting large-scale datasets. However\, these new developments also present practical and ethical challenges. In this talk\, Dr. VanValkenburgh will draw on his own multi-faceted research projects in Peru to discuss how digital approaches are expanding archaeology’s reach and scientific impact\, while also changing the way that the field works with stakeholders and publics.
